Description

ARTICLE FOR SMOKING FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a smoking article that includes a wrapped cylinder of smoking material.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Some articles for smoking comprise a cylinder of smoking material having an outer shell and a sheet or wrap disposed between the cylinder of smoking material and the outer shell.
For example, WO 2005/082180 discloses articles for smoking comprising a cylinder of smoking material with an envelope around the cylinder and a web of material comprising an adsorbent material and a flavoring, the web of material being placed between the cylinder of material for smoking and the envelope.
WO 2006/023281 and WO 2006/014995 describe cigarettes comprising a tobacco column surrounded by an outer wrapping paper, and a partial internal wrapping extending longitudinally with respect to the tobacco column. The inner wrap material may contain a humectant.
US 6,997,190 discloses smoking articles comprising a cylinder of smoking material wrapped in a 2262. 54 enveloping material. The wrapping material comprises a base sheet having a main surface and a plurality of bands applied to that main surface in the form of a pattern, each band having at least two layers of weft material with at least one of the layers of material of weft incorporating a flavoring. The wrapping material may have a coating applied thereto which coating may contain a humectant, for example 1-5% by weight of humectant of the weight of the coating composition.
US 2003/0178039 discloses cigarettes comprising a smoking material wrapped in an enclosing wrapper material to form a smoking cylinder. The bounding envelope material may comprise up to 10% by weight of a humectant. However, there is no description about the use of an adsorbent in said wrapping material.
US 6,257,243 discloses cigarettes comprising a cylinder having an internal segment of smoking material, a coating for the inner segment, an outer segment of smoking material and a coating for the outer segment. However, nothing is described here about the use of an adsorbent in the coatings.
However, despite these teachings, a need to provide improved smoking articles remains in the art.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide an improved smoking article.
In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a smoking article comprises: a cylinder of smoking material; Y a first sheet material comprising at least one diluent, wherein said diluent is present in an amount effective to dilute emissions of the cylinder of smoking material during combustion.
The at least one diluent is preferably present in the first sheet material in an amount from about 5 to 80% by weight of the sheet material, preferably from about 5 to 70% by weight, more preferably from about 10 to 60% by weight. weight, more preferably from about 20 to 50% by weight. Preferably, the diluent is at least one aerosol forming agent selected from the group consisting of: polyhydric alcohols, glycerol, propylene glycol, triethylene glycol, esters, triethyl citrate, triacetin, high boiling hydrocarbons, non-polyol compounds, glycols, sorbitol, and lactic acid. Triacetin is particularly preferred.
Preferably, the first sheet material further comprises at least one diluent stabilizing means and / or at least one adsorbent. Said diluent or adsorbent stabilizer means is preferably an integral component in the first sheet material. Preferably, the diluent or adsorbent stabilizer means is selected from the group consisting of zeolite, sepiolite, clay, silica gel, activated alumina, minerals, resin, and carbon, and particularly preferably the adsorbent is activated carbon. The activated carbon may preferably be in granular, powder or particulate form and have an average particle size of less than 250 μp, preferably less than 100 μm, preferably less than 50 μp, preferably less than 20 μp? Activated carbon can have any level of activity and generally a charcoal with higher activity is beneficial. Preferably, the activated carbon has an activity level of 30-180% carbon tetrachloride, and more preferably 60-120%.
Preferably, the adsorbent or diluent stabilizer means has a charge level of less than 80% by weight of the first sheet material, preferably less than 50%, more preferably between about 10 to 45%.
The article for smoking can have several configurations. In one embodiment, the first sheet material extends over the entire length of the cylinder of smoking material and is wrapped around the outside of the cylinder of the smoking material. In this embodiment, the first sheet material contains the diluent and acts as a wrap providing support for the cylinder of smoking material.
In another embodiment, the smoking article comprises a second sheet material that preferably contains no diluent, wherein the second sheet material is wrapped around the entire length of the cylinder of smoking material. Therefore, the second sheet material acts as a shell for the smoking material, providing support for the cylinder of smoking material. When the second sheet material is provided, the first sheet material may also extend over the entire length of the cylinder of smoking material, or may extend only over a portion or a plurality of discrete portions of the length of the cylinder of smoking material. while the second sheet material is present as a shell to provide mechanical support for the cylinder of smoking material. The use and placement of smaller portions will provide flexibility to the design of the cigarette impacting envelope diffusivity, tar propensity and diluent release.
If a first and second layers of sheet material are provided, the second sheet material is preferably located on the outside of the first sheet material in relation to the axis of the cylinder of smoking material. In one embodiment, the first sheet material is placed directly between the cylinder of smoking material and the second sheet material. In another embodiment, the first sheet material is located inside the cylinder of smoking material, such that the smoking material is located between the first sheet material and the second sheet material which acts as an outer wrap, in a coaxial arrangement. The first sheet material can be rolled (in a "Swiss roll" arrangement or a twisted pouring arrangement in which a rolled / twisted paper waste is provided in the center of the cylinder) and located within the cylinder of smoking material coaxially with the second sheet material.
Preferably, at least one of the first and second sheet materials has a thickness of 20 to 300 μp ?.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS OF THE DRAWINGS In order that the object of the invention can be easily understood and easily carried out, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the diagrammatic drawings, in which: Figures 1-8 show amplified cross-sectional side views of smoking articles embodying the present invention; Figures 9-11 show amplified views of the unfiltered end of a smoking article according to the invention; Y Figure 12 shows an exploded perspective view of a smoking article embodying the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The Applicant has now found that, if a smoking article is produced including a cylinder of smoking material and a first sheet material comprising diluent (s) and optional adsorbent (s) and / or a diluent stabilizing medium. , the ratio of smoke components that are released from the smoking material to the total tar yield is reduced by dilution through the eluted diluent. Also, the levels of smoke components that are released from the smoking material can be reduced by the presence of the first smoking material. Also to provide the means to contain the diluent, the first sheet material can additionally act as a wrap, wrapping the entire length of the cylinder of smoking material in such a way that no additional wrap is required. Alternatively, a second sheet material can be additionally provided. If a second sheet material forms a shell on the outside of the first sheet material, the Applicant has found that the presence of diluent (s) in the first sheet material does not result in unpleasant speckling of the second sheet material.
Therefore a new and inventive solution for the present problem of the prior art is explained, trying to improve known smoking materials.
If present, the second sheet material may be a wrapping material comprising a web or fused material known to those of skill in the art, for example a cellulosic paper web or reconstituted tobacco sheet material. It can incorporate a coating, a treatment or a chemical modification such as those intended to reduce the smoke in lateral points or reduce the propensity to ignition. The second sheet material may be with or without fillers that may or may not be adsorbent and / or diluent stabilizer means.
Typically, the wrapping materials are continuous around the outer circumference of a cylinder of smoking material. Generally, the ends of the cylinder are not provided with wrapping material; however, such a configuration would still be within the scope of the present invention.
The second sheet material can have a thickness of 5 to 500 μm, for example 10 to 300 μm or 20 to 60 μm.
The first sheet material can be any weft material known to those skilled in the art, for example a cellulosic paper web or reconstituted tobacco sheet materials. It can incorporate a coating, a treatment, or a chemical modification. The first sheet material can be provided with fillers. It may include adsorbents and / or diluent stabilizing media.
According to various embodiments, the first sheet material may be coextensive with the second sheet material, or may be provided only in one or more discrete portions of the length of the cylinder of smoking material. The first sheet material may be located between the second sheet material and the smoking material, which may be termed "inside" the second sheet material, or may be provided on the surface of the second sheet material opposite the smoking material, or "external" to the second sheet material. According to one embodiment of the first sheet material, a single patch extends over only a part of the inner surface of the second sheet material, around the entire circumference.
When the first sheet material is in the form of multiple portions of patches, such patches can be in any form. For example, said patches may be in the form of multiple bands that are spaced in the longitudinal direction of the cylinder of smoking material. Alternatively, said patches may be in the form of circumferentially spaced strips extending along all or a portion of the length of the cylinder of smoking material.
Moreover, the patches can be a combination of such bands and strips. Said combination of bands and strips can be located on the internal, external or both surfaces of the second sheet material.
When more than one sheet material is used in the smoking article, for example when there are multiple strips, patches, or full wraps, each of the sheet materials may be the same or different in composition from any of the other materials. of sheet.
The first sheet material can have a thickness of 5 to 500 μ ??, for example 10 to 300 μp or 20 to 60 μm. However, in some configurations materials having a greater thickness may be used, for example longitudinally extending strips.
The first sheet material comprises one or more diluents. The incorporation of diluents allows the production of a smoking article, which upon smoking, generates an aerosol comprising smoke derived from the smoking material, for example tobacco smoke, and one or more diluents eluted.
Suitable diluents for use in the first sheet material include aerosol forming media that utilize a wide range of classes of substances known to those skilled in the art. For example, polyhydric alcohols, such as glycerol, propylene glycol, sorbitol and triethylene glycol; asters, such as diacetin, triethyl citrate, isopropyl myristate or triacetin, high-boiling hydrocarbons, or lactic acid. A combination of diluents can be used, in equal or different proportions. Preferably, the diluent is triacetin, triethyl citrate or isopropyl myristate.
The diluents, and, when present, the adsorbent material and / or diluent stabilizing medium can be provided in any suitable form. Examples include liquids and solids, such as granular, powder, crystalline or other particles, for example nanoparticles, molecular cage structures, casings.
The adsorbent material (s) and / or diluent stabilizer means may be selected from any suitable material known to skilled workers. Examples include zeolite, sepiolite, clay, activated alumina, minerals, resins, silica gel and activated carbon. In preferred embodiments, the adsorbent material and / or diluent stabilizing medium is carbon, such as activated carbon. When activated carbon is used, the level of activation can be measured by evaluating the percentage of carbon tetrachloride (CTC: carbon tetrachloride) as is known in the art. In general, the coal is weighed, exposed to CTC and then the carbon weight is measured again. The increase in the weight of the coal is calculated as a percentage.
For optimal use in the present invention, activated carbon will preferably have a high activity and can have an activity of up to 180% CTC. More preferably, the carbon has an activity of 40-160% of the CTC. In relation to the selection of one or more adsorbent materials or diluent stabilizer means, it will be understood that the adsorbents or diluent stabilizer means present in the first layer of sheet material may be the same or different in each of the layers of material of plot. That is, when multiple layers of weft material, strips or webs are used, the adsorbent materials and / or diluent stabilizer means or combinations of adsorbent materials and / or diluent stabilizer means may be the same or different in each layer of material of plot, strip or band.
A first sheet material comprising one or more adsorbent materials and / or diluent stabilizer means may be in the form of a paper containing activated carbon.
In a further embodiment of the present invention the cylinder of smoking material comprises a central core of smoking material, completely wrapped along its length, with an annular cylinder of smoking material enveloping the central core. The central core can be wrapped in the first sheet material along its entire length, or it can be wrapped in a third sheet material with portions of the first sheet material supported by the third sheet material, either inside or outside the material of sheet. The third sheet material used to wrap the central core may be the same as or different from the second sheet material which wraps the annular cylinder of smoking material. The article for smoking may further include portions of the first sheet material which may be bands, strips or a combination thereof located on the inner, outer surface or both of the second sheet material that surrounds the annular cylinder of smoking material .
The smoking material, either a solid cylinder or central core with ring cylinder, can be any smoking material considered appropriate in the art. For example, it can be a smoking material containing tobacco, a modified tobacco smoking material, for example expanded tobacco, extracted tobacco, physically, chemically and / or biochemically modified tobacco or a smoking material that does not contain tobacco. It can be a foamed and / or extruded material. Preferably, the smoking material is a tobacco-containing material combined with smoking material that is not tobacco, or comprises only a tobacco material. Conveniently, the tobacco material comprises one or more of stems, sheet and tobacco powder. An example of tobacco material is one that contains one or more of the following types of tobacco: Virginia or smoke-cured tobacco, Burley tobacco, Oriental tobacco, reconstituted tobacco, stems and modified tobacco. Preferably, the smoking material comprises a mixture of tobacco material or a mixture of tobacco material and non-tobacco material. When present, a central core may contain a material for smoking different from that of the annular cylinder.
The smoking article may additionally comprise a filter element located at one end of the cylinder of smoking material. Said filter element can, for example, comprise an adsorbent material. The filter element can be a multiple filter comprising multiple sections such as, for example, a dual or triple filter. Suitable filters are well known to those skilled in the art. Such filters known in the art include Dalmatian filters in which a particulate adsorbent material is interposed in the fibrous filter material, for example fibrous cellulose material, and cavity filters, in which a segment filter cavity portion Multiple contains adsorbent material.
The smoking article according to the present invention can be easily prepared by techniques known in the art.

The first sheet material containing carbon included 39% fiber and 36% activated carbon. The activated carbon had 100% carbon tetrachloride (CTC) activity.
Four different levels of triacetin diluent were supplied to the carbon paper. First, a control level was developed with paper containing unimpregnated carbon. The test levels included papers impregnated with 10, 19, or 28 mg / triacetin cigarette.
Approximately two weeks after the manufacture, the level of triacetin in the smoke was measured (Table 1) and the dilution was calculated (Table 2). Dilution was calculated as [triacetin in smoke (mg / cigarette) / dry matter in the form of nicotine-free particles (mg / cigarette)] x 100. Cigarettes were stored at 22 ° C and 60% relative humidity and analyzes they were repeated at 3 months and 6 months (Tables 1 and 2) showing that triacetin was stable in cigarettes.
Table 1. Triacetin in smoke (mg / cigarette) It is appreciated that although the control level did not have triacetin diluent in the sheet material, triacetin is present in the cellulose acetate cigarette filters as used here, which explains the triacetin levels measured in the control products .
Table 2. Smoke Dilution (%) The visual evaluation of the cigarettes showed that they were free of unpleasant spots throughout the duration of the study.
Example 2 Cigarettes having a 56 mm tobacco cylinder and a 27 mm cellulose acetate filter with a circumference of 24.6 mm were manufactured. The specifications for the second sheet material that surrounds the tobacco cylinder was paper comprising mixed fibers and with 50 CU of permeability and 2% of potassium citrate (combustion additive). The tobacco cylinder comprised a mixture of smoke-cured Virginia tobacco and Burley's sheets.
A 56 mm long tobacco cylinder with a circumference of 16 mm was wrapped with a carbon containing a first sheet material and located longitudinally in the center of the cigarette cylinder of the cigarette. The first sheet material with carbon content included 39% fiber and 36% activated carbon. The activated carbon had 100% carbon tetrachloride (CTC) activity.
The design of the test cigarette included the impregnation of 16 mg triacetin in the first sheet material with carbon content. A control level was manufactured which was identical except for the sheet with non-impregnated carbon content. In figure 6 a scheme showing a similar cigarette design is shown.
The sample and control cigarettes had vent at the tip to provide a yield of dry particulate matter free of nicotine of 6 mg / cigarette. The level of triacetin in the smoke and the dilution was obtained (Table 3). The dilution was calculated as [triacetin in smoke (mg / cigarette) / dry matter in the form of nicotine-free particles (mg / cigarette)] x 100. As is evident from the following data, the test cigarette of Example 2 achieved a 22% dilution of the smoke.
Table 3. Analysis Results Cigarette Triacetin in smoke Dilution of smoke (mg / cigarette) (%) Control 0.28 4.7 Sample 1.28 22.5 The visual evaluation of the cigarettes showed that they were free of unpleasant spots.
The foregoing description and examples have been presented merely to illustrate the invention and are not intended to be limiting.
