The tetrazinebased energetic material is ignited through the use of a percussion cap, a piezoelectric crystal or a battery-supplied electric spark or by encapsulating it in a container that is then exposed to a burning flame. The gas produced upon ignition is employed a propellant such as to inflate life rafts, life vests, emergency evacuation slides, tires, air bags and other inflatable devices. The gas produced upon ignition is alternatively employed to power an engine and many other applications such as a fire suppressant.

Description

APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR THE USE OF ENERGETIC MATERIAL BASED ON TETRACINE FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for the use of energy materials based on tetrakine. More particularly, the invention relates to an apparatus or method using a gas produced from an energy material based on tetrakine. The present invention is also related to the ignition of the tetracin-based energy material. In some embodiments, the tetrakine-based energy material is ignited by the use of a fulminating capsule, a piezoelectric crystal or an electric spark supplied by a battery or by encapsulating it in a container which is then exposed to a burning flame. The present invention is further related to the use of the gas produced in the ignition as a propellant such as for inflating liferafts, life jackets, emergency evacuation sliders, tires, airbags, other inflatable devices. . Additionally, the present invention relates to the use of gas produced during ignition in many other applications such as fire suppressors or as an alternative vehicle fuel.
REF. : 195673 BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Currently, tetrakine-based energy materials are well known, such as what is known as "BTATz" containing 3,6-bis (1H-1, 2, 3, 4-tetrazol-5-ylamino) -1, 2, 4, 5-tetrakine or salts thereof, as described in U.S. Patents 6,458,227 and 6,657,059, the descriptions of each of which are incorporated herein by reference. The BTATz was developed by Los. Alamos Laboratory mainly as an explosive for military applications The gas produced by the ignition of BTATz has many beneficial properties that the present invention has incorporated in many commercial applications such as the use of gas as a propellant to inflate liferafts, life jackets, water sliders emergency evacuation, tires, air bags and other inflatable devices or as an alternative fuel for vehicles to provide power to an engine and its use as a fire suppressor. As a prior art in the art for inflation, there are many types of inflators designed to inflate inflatable articles such as personal flotation devices (vests, rings and life-saving shoes), liferafts, buoys, signaling equipment and evacuation sliders. emergency. Inflators typically comprise a body to receive the neck of a gas cartridge containing compressed gas such as carbon dioxide. A reciprocating perforation is disposed in the inflator body to pierce the fragile seal of the gas cartridge whereby the compressed gas flows into an exhaust manifold of the inflator and then into the article to be inflated. Typically, a manually movable trigger lever is connected to the piercing needle in such a manner that the piercing needle pierces the fragile seal of the cartridge when pulling a ball lanyard. U.S. Pat. 3,809,288, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference, illustrates a particular embodiment of a manual inflator. In the inflation technique, the gas cartridge is normally sized to contain the volume of carbon dioxide needed to inflate the article. Inflatable small items such as life jackets are inflated with a relatively small volume of carbon dioxide. Therefore, smaller gas cartridges can be used easily. Larger items such as liferafts and emergency evacuation sliders for aircraft require relatively larger volumes of carbon dioxide. Therefore, they must be used, whether larger gas cartridges, or multiple gas cartridges, or a combination of both, in order to have a sufficient volume of carbon dioxide to fully inflate the Article . It is desirable in many applications in the inflation art to minimize the weight of the inflatable article. For example, in the aviation industry, it is desirable to minimize the weight of each apparatus on the aircraft including the gas cartridges used to inflate lifejackets, liferafts and emergency escape sliders. Similarly, in other applications it is often desired to minimize not only the weight but the size of the gas cartridge used in the inflatable equipment. Therefore, there is currently a need for lighter and smaller sources for gas to inflate that produce the same or a larger volume of a propellant than conventional carbon dioxide gas cartridges. In related inflation applications such as airbags and the like, there is similarly a need to produce an environmentally safe gas to inflate the airbag. For example, with respect to airbags, it is appreciated that several prior art propellants have been used in automotive safety containment air bags. Most of these propellants from prior techniques are problematic due to the excessive heat generated, high sensitivity to inadvertent ignition. Some may even be toxic in their state without burning and burning. Airbag propellants of previous techniques often have a risk of environment and require special handling and disposal procedures. Additionally, many of the prior art pyrotechnic materials commonly used in automotive airbags pose a risk when collected and reused as improvised explosive devices. In relation to minimizing hazardous propellants used in airbags, in the technique of fire suppressors, there is currently a need to produce fire suppressant gas that is safe for humans. Similarly, there is currently a need for an environmentally friendly gas that can be used as an alternative fuel for vehicles to power an engine, thus minimizing the contamination of fossil fuels and greenhouse gases. Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide an improvement that overcomes the aforementioned inadequacies of the prior art and provides an improvement that is a significant contribution to the advancement of the use of BTATz in a wide variety of applications. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION For purposes of summarizing the invention, the present invention comprises apparatus and methods using a gas produced from an energy material based on tetrakine such as the one known as "BTATz" containing 3.6- bis (1H-1,2,3,4-tetrazol-5-ylamino-1,2,4,5-tetrakine or salts thereof, as described in US Patents 6,458,227 and 6,657,059, the descriptions of which of each are incorporated herein by reference In some embodiments, the tetrakine-based energy material is ignited in accordance with the present invention by the use of a fulminating capsule, a piezoelectric crystal or an electric spark supplied by battery or by encapsulating it in A container that is then exposed to a burning flame The gas produced during ignition is used as a propellant such as to inflate life rafts, life jackets, emergency evacuation sliders, tires, air bags and other inflatable devices. produced during ignition is alternatively used to drive an engine, Alternatively, in accordance with the present invention, the gas produced during ignition is used in many other applications. such as a fire suppressor. More specifically, the BTATz is used as a propellant that generates deflagration gas to provide mainly nitrogen gas as the gas medium to inflate. The BTATz material is selected, in part, due to the non-toxic nature of the effluent gases produced from the deflagration of the material and its non-explosive nature as an energy material. The temperatures of the BTATz effluent gases they remain sufficiently low and have a very fast cooling rate to allow the use of the propellant in life jackets, life rafts and other traditional gas-containing bladder-type devices for inflatable devices without thermal damage to the device or damage by contact or exposure to the user . The grain load or shape of the BTATz material used in various inflator modes can be of a variety of shapes or configurations according to the special requirement with respect to desired time and pressure curves for the inflation event. The shape of the grain can alternatively be formed as a loose powder, a shape as pellets, a simple monolithic grain charge or any number of specific geometries required to provide the desired deflagration rate and gas generation, as well as any number of dispositions of packaged desired adapted to various inflators for various purposes, including, but not limited to; life jackets, liferafts, emergency escape gliders of aircraft. Additionally, a variety of other chemical substances can be added to the BTATz material to alter performance with respect to the rate of deflagration, the temperature of the effluent or other properties as required for specific environments or applications for the inflator device. The material of BTATz can use a binder material in order to form specific grain forms as mentioned above. The binder materials may include PVA (polyvinyl alcohol), PEA (polyethylene acrylate), or other suitable chemical materials to provide a binding property to the base material in order to maintain a specific structure or formation such as pellets, spherical balls or a form of monolithic grain. The addition of a binder material to the BTATz has shown a remarkable reduction in the sensitivity of the electrostatic discharge spark of the material. In order to reliably start the BTATz deflagration with binder material, the inclusion of "pure" material (without binder), can be used as a primary, spark-sensitive charge to facilitate ignition when an electric spark is used as a medium of ignition. In the various embodiments of the invention, the inflator can be initiated either by manual or automatic means or by a combination of manual and automatic methods. The initiation or ignition of the BTATz charge in the inflator mechanism may be by means of, but not limited to, a primary pyrotechnic charge such as a commercial primary or fulminating capsule, a mechanical pyrotechnic detonator, an electric wick, a spark generated by a source of stored electrical energy such as a battery or generated by means of a piezoelectric device. In an automatic initiation mode the inflator device can be activated either by electrical or electronic means. The mechanical initiation may comprise a pull-and-pull lever arrangement of the pull-out type that alternatively releases either a mechanical hammer or hammer to strike a primary flash capsule or activates a piezoelectric generator to produce an electrical spark through a conductive space for start the BTATz propellant. The optional automatic initiation can be by means of an electronic water immersion detector circuit that will activate the release of electrical energy stored in the battery to produce a spark, activate a pyrotechnic detonator, start an electric wick, or activate the release of a hammer. mechanical or hammer to impact a primary or fulminant pyrotechnic capsule. Alternatively, the automatic initiation may be by means of a water soluble coil which, upon dissolution, releases a hammer or striker arrangement to strike a fulminating or primary capsule. One embodiment of the inflator device includes a lever arrangement and drive cam that provides multiple striking impacts of the hammer or striker mechanism against the primary or fulminating capsule with a single pull of the lever. Another modality of the mechanism Inflator includes a similar lever and cam arrangement that provides multiple drives of a piezoelectric spark generator. Both multiple actuation mechanisms serve to provide a safety factor to ensure activation of the BTATz deflagration event. The containment of the cargo that generates BTATz gas can be in a metal, thermoplastic, thermosetting plastic or elastomeric container that can be easily attached and detached from a body of the inflator mechanism to facilitate the assembly and disassembly of the device. One embodiment of the cargo container uses both the BTATz material that generates gas and a fulminating or primary capsule. Another embodiment of the charging container includes electrical contact points and an internal conductive spark gap arrangement. Cargo containers can have an airtight seal to prevent moisture from entering the chemical charge and ignition components. The cargo containers can be of various sizes and geometric configurations to contain various quantities of BTATz material, various grain geometries or several specialized connections for different specific inflator devices. Another embodiment of the inflator includes a means which alternatively indicates a state triggered, not fired, (ready) by displaying an appropriate indicator or by means of a physical indicator. The inflator can be manufactured from a thermoplastic material, thermoset polymer, metal, elastomer or any combination thereof. The foregoing has highlighted, although broadly, the most relevant and important features of the present invention so that the detailed description of the invention can be understood below in such a way that the present contribution to the art can be more fully appreciated. The additional features of the invention will be described hereinafter which form the object of the claims of the invention. Those skilled in the art should appreciate that the conception and specific embodiment described can easily be used as a basis for modifying or designing other structures to accomplish the same purposes of the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention comprises an apparatus and method for using a gas produced from an energy material based on tetrakine such as that known as "BTATz" as a propellant in one or more devices described in the patents and in the patent applications listed in Table I that are appended to this, whose descriptions of each of the patents and patent applications are incorporated herein by reference. More particularly, the BTATz propellant can be used in any device, system or application, as described in Table I, in which it is necessary to generate a harmless gas source from a supply of material. Without limiting the scope of the preceding paragraph, with reference to Figure 1, one embodiment of the invention comprises a gas cartridge 1-10 having an outlet 1-12 for fluid connection to an inflatable article, shown with the reference number 1-14. The gas cartridge 1-10 comprises a conical reaction chamber 1-16 containing the BTATz material 1-18. The conical reaction chamber 1-16 is desired to control the rate of evolution of the gal by linearly burning the BTATZ 1-18 material (which is believed to be achieved by the use of a binder). The conical chamber 1-16 is hermetically sealed and protected by a cover 1-20 to prevent the leakage of moisture and contain the BTATZ 1-18 material in place within chamber 1-16. The conical chamber 1-16 is mounted within a cylindrical shell 1-22 which provides mechanical stability and creates an air gap that allows thermal conductivity, and therefore a high resistance to transfer heat. A hemispherical dome 1-24 is placed on the cover 1-20 to provide a greater volume of space for the nitrogen gas to pressurize to drive a Joule-Thompson cooling through the outlet 1-12. Respective fold flanges 1-26 allow the aforementioned parts to be folded into a single unit that will withstand the pressure of the entire gas discharge from the deflagration of the BTATZ 1-18 material. Another embodiment of the invention comprises the use of BTATz as a propellant for automotive safety containment air bags. The BTATz is particularly suitable for use as a propellant for air bags due to its high nitrogen gas output and low gas temperatures. Also, the BTATz material is non-toxic and is environmentally safe and non-detonable, making it useless for malicious purposes, such as improvised explosive devices. The high output of nitrogen gas from BTATz allows less propellant to achieve the inflation of the airbag containment device with materials commonly used today. More particularly, with reference to Figure 2, the inflation device of the air bag of the invention comprises a vented envelope 2-10 in which an internal cavity 2-12 filled with the propellant of BTATz 2-14 is located. A fulminating capsule / detonator / lighter 2-16 is placed in the bottom of the cavity 2-12 with its firing terminals 2-16L extending through the casing 2-10 for connection to a firing mechanism. A space can be provided between the ventilation holes 2-18 of the casing 2-10 and the internal cavity 2-12 to receive a filter therein. The filter 2-20 has the function of filtering the gas produced by propellant 2-14 during firing. Upon detecting an impact, the trigger mechanism of the airbag is actuated to produce an electrical signal to send a signal to fire the capsule fulminating 2-16, whereby the propellant of BTATz 2-14 is turned on to produce the gas nitrogen that is then filtered to exit the 2-10 shell and inflate the air bag. Another embodiment of the invention comprises an apparatus and method for using a gas produced from a tetrakine-based energy material such as that known as "BTATz" as a fire suppressant in one or more devices described in the patents and patent applications listed in Table II attached hereto , whose descriptions of each of the patents and patent applications are incorporated herein by reference. More particularly, the BTATz propellant can be used in any device, system or application, such as those described in Table I, in which it is necessary to generate a harmless gas source from the material supply. More particularly, the nitrogen suppressant gas produced by igniting the BTATz material can be used in any device, system or application, such as those described above, in which it is necessary to generate a source of suppressing gas from the material supply. As shown in Figure 3, in accordance with the spirit and scope of the invention and without limitation, an example application includes filling a container 3-10 with the BTATz 3-12 material so that it is completely encapsulated therein. . The container 3-10 is constructed of a material 3-14 in such a way that when it is thrown, impelled, dropped or otherwise introduced into a fire, the material 3-14 constituting the container 3-10 is melted , burns, opens by fracture or is otherwise released to expose the BTATz 3-12 material on fire, whereby BTATz 3-12 material is ignited by fire flames. When the BTATz 3-12 material is ignited, a large volume of nitrogen suppressing fire is produced to displace the oxygen from the fire and thereby extinguish the fire. It is contemplated that the container 3-10 may comprise a variety of configurations and dimensions to facilitate its introduction to fire. More particularly, without limiting the spirit and scope of the invention, the container 3-10 may comprise a flammable container the size of a softball 3-10 filled with the BTATz 3-12 material which is easily held by hand for to be thrown into a fire that burns. Once the container the size of a softball 3-10 is in the fire, the flammable material 3-14 which constitutes the container 3-10 ยท catches fire, whereby the BTATz fire suppressant material 3-12 It ignites to produce a large volume of nitrogen gas suppressing fire to extinguish the fire. Depending on whether the fire burns in a confined space or burns in an open space, many of the containers the size of a 3-10 softball can be thrown as needed to put out the fire. In the case of a forest fire, many, even thousands, containers of the size of a softball (or larger) 3-10 can be thrown into the fire from the air.
As shown in Figure 4, the BTATz 4-12 material can be incorporated into portable fire extinguishers 4-16 with or without other propellants. For example, as shown in Figure 4, similar to a conventional fire extinguisher 4-16 using a propellant, a gas cylinder 4-18 can be filled through its opening 4-20 with the BTATz 4 material. -12. A conventional manually operated valve / nozzle 4-22 is then installed in the opening and cylinder 4-18 is pressurized with a 4-24 gas. When a fire needs to be extinguished, the nozzle 4-22 is directed towards the base of the fire and the valve 4-20 is actuated whereby the pressurized gas 4-24 displaces the BTATz material 4-12 from the bottom of the cylinder 4 -18 through a central tube 4-26 to then be driven to the base of the fire where it is ignited to produce a large volume of nitrogen gas is deprived of oxygen fire extinguishing the fire. It is appreciated that the "portable" extinguishers described above 4-16 may comprise a valve 4-22 which is actuated when a fire is detected in such a manner that the extinguisher 4-16 can be mounted at a fixed location, such as in the bilge of a boat, to automatically release the BTATz 4-12 material once a fire is detected. The BTATz material can be used in a 4-16 fire extinguisher without a propellant. More particularly, as shown in Figure 5, the valve 5-22 may include a lighter (e.g., a detonator, a fulminating capsule or other electronic or mechanical spark generator). When cylinder 5-18 is filled with BTATz material 5-12, it can be ignited directly by means of the valve igniter 5-22. When ignited in cylinder 5-18, the expanding nitrogen gas produced from BTATz 5-12 material that burns pressurizes the cylinder 5-18- The pressurized cylinder 5-18 is then "charged" and the nitrogen gas can then released immediately (or released at will) to extinguish the fire (similar to fire suppression gas systems that store Halon, F 2000 or other fire suppressing gases). In fact, the igniter of the valve 5-22 can be operated remotely by means of a sensor 5-30 in an area 5-32 to be protected (for example, a quarter of computers). The container 5-12 can be fixedly mounted in a central location and its output 5-34 connected to the protected area 5-32 in which the sensor 5-30 is located. In this way, when a fire is detected in the protected area 5-32, the igniter of the valve 5-22 is operated to ignite the BTATz 5-12 material to produce a large volume of nitrogen gas which then flows through the the pipe 34 to be injected into the protected area 5-32 to extinguish the fire. Therefore, it should be appreciated that the BTATz material Fire suppressor 5-12, coupled with the ignition system, can be used as a substitute for Halon or FM2000 in a wide variety of fire suppression systems, such as those described in the patents and patent applications listed above. With reference to Figure 6, in another embodiment of a BTATz inflator of the invention, a generally cylindrical BTATz charging vessel 6-10 is partially filled with a quantity of BTATz material 6-12 and then the loading vessel 6. -10 is filled with a primer charge 6-14. Preferably, a hollow central core 6-16 extends through the gas generating charge of BTATz 6-12 and the priming charge 6-14 of a specific grain shape that defines the rate of burning of the BTATz material 6-12 once it is turned on by the priming charge 6-14. The loading vessel 6-10 is then sealed with a seal membrane 6-16 (eg, a film). A particulate filter 6-18 is installed on the seal membrane 6-16 and then a ventilated cover 6-20 with a downwardly extending lighter 6-22 is installed around the open end of the charge container 6-10 with the lighter 6-22 extending into the hollow central core 6-16 of the priming charge 6-14. The exposed surface of the ventilated cover 6-20 includes electrical contacts of oscillating plates 6-24 connected electrically to the 6-22 lighter to fire it by applying an electrical voltage to the contacts 6-24. By firing the 6-22 ignitor, the priming charge 6-14 is turned on which in turn ignites the main BTATz gas generating charge 6-12 to produce a supply of nitrogen gas at a rate determined by the shape of the grain used. . The nitrogen gas produced is vented from the loading vessel 6-10 through the ventilation holes in the cover 6-20.
The BTATz charging container 6-10 is sized to be installed replaceably, preferably sealably, in a lower chamber of a generally cylindrical inflator casing 6-26 and held in position once installed by means of securing lugs 6-28 which are secured in corresponding securing grooves 6-30 formed in the lumen of the inflator casing 6-26. The exposed end of the loading container 6-10 includes an indicator fin 6-30 to facilitate the installation of a fresh charge container 6-10 and then the removal once it is spent) for example, the loading container is fired) 6-10. An exhaust port 6-32 is located in the lower chamber of the inflator casing 6-26 above the ventilation holes of the cover 6-20 of the loading vessel 6-10 so that when the generating charge is ignited of BTATz main gas 6-12 to produce the Nitrogen gas supply, the gas that is drained from there escapes through the exhaust port 6-32 towards the item to be inflated. The inflator casing 6-26 further includes a separate upper chamber sealed from the lower chamber by means of an intermediate divider wall 6-34. The upper chamber contains an electronic assembly activated by water, indicated generally by the number 6-36, whose function is to supply a tripping voltage to the electrical contacts 6-24 of the 6-22 lighter to fire the same when the inflator shell 6-26 is submerged in a body of water. More specifically, the electronic assembly 6-36 comprises a pair of immersion contact sensors 6-38 extending through a wall of the upper chamber of the casing 6-26. The sensors 6-38 are electrically connected to a controller 6-40 contained in the upper chamber. The controller 6-40 is optionally composed of discrete electrical components, integrated circuits or a microcontroller energized by means of a battery source 6-42 also contained in the upper chamber. The controller 6-40 detects the moment in which the sensors 6-38 have been submerged in a body of water. The controller 6-40 additionally comprises output contacts 6-42 which extend through the intermediate wall 6-34 to make electrical contact with the respective electrical contacts of oscillating plates 6-24 of the lighter 6-22 when the loading container 6-10 is installed in the lower chamber of the casing 6-26. When the controller 6-40 detects that the sensors 6-38 have been submerged in a body of water, it produces an output voltage to its output contacts 6-42 to fire the igniter 6-22. It is appreciated that optionally the controller 6-40 may additionally include a red / green status indicator LED 6-44 extending through the upper chamber wall of the casing 6-26 to indicate the trigger condition (e.g. , green for ready and red indicating a spent charging container 6-10, low battery or other inoperative condition) of the inflator. In addition, optionally, the operation of the controller 6-40 can be controlled by means of a on / off mode switch 6-46 which extends through the wall of the upper chamber case 6-26. It is further appreciated that the sensors 6-38, the indicator LED 6-44 and the mode switch 6-46 are preferably sealed as they extend through the wall of the upper chamber to prevent moisture from entering the upper chamber and damaging the upper chamber. otherwise the operation of the controller 6-40. Finally, it is appreciated that the end of the upper chamber can be removable to allow the replacement of the battery 6-42.
As shown in Figure 7, also another embodiment of the BTATZ inflator of the invention, similar to that of Figure 6, but configured to function as a tire inflator 7-10. More specifically, the tire pump 7-10 of the invention comprises a generally cylindrical housing 7-12 which sealingly receives at its proximal end a replaceable BTATz charging container 7-14 by circumferential coupling threads 7-16 in the external side of the loading vessel 7-14 and in the lumen of the shell 7-12. The loading container 7-14 includes a threaded ventilated cover 7-18 which allows filling. The loading vessel 7-14 is filled with a supply of BTATz material. A spark gap 7-16 is formed at the upper end of the load vessel 7-14 to create a spark when voltage is applied to its terminals 7-18. The trigger spark created is injected into the loading vessel 7-14 to ignite the BTATz material. As described above in relation to Figure 6, the BTATz material may include a hollow core with a desired grain shape to control the degree of burning and therefore the rate at which the nitrogen gas is produced. The nitrogen gas produced by burning the BTATz material is vented from the loading vessel 7-14 to the distal end of the shell 7-12. A piezoelectric mechanism 7-20 is mounted to the wall of the Distal end of shell 7-12. The piezoelectric mechanism 7-20 comprises a button 7-22 which, upon being pressed, creates a voltage spark by means of the piezoelectric which is supplied by the internal electrical terminals 7-24 to the terminals 7-18 of the spark gap 7-16. Therefore, it should be appreciated that by pressing the button 7-22, the piezoelectric is triggered to create a voltage spark that is supplied to the spark gap 7-16 to ignite the material material of BTATz in the charging vessel 7- 14, whereby the nitrogen gas produced there is dewatered towards the distal end of the shell 7-12. The distal end of the shell 7-12 is preferably tapered to receive a valve 7-26 which is designed to open a conventional inflation valve of a standard automobile tire, commonly referred to as the Schrader Valve. Consequently, during use to fill a tire, the 7-26 valve can be hooked to the Schrader Valve and the 7-22 button pressed to trigger the BTATz 7-14 loading container whereby the nitrogen gas produced flows into the tire. to inflate it. Preferably, in order to prevent excessive inflation of the tire, a pressure limiting presetting mechanism 7-28 is incorporated in the casing 7-12 to automatically let gas pressure escape to the atmosphere as long as the gas pressure exceeds the preset pressure. In one embodiment, the presetting pressure limiting mechanism comprises a releasable release valve 7-30 whose release pressure is preset by means of a selector 7-32 with pressure indicator lines 7-34 formed therein. The indicator lines 7-34 allow the informed selection of the presetting pressure (eg, 1436 Pa (30 psi)) whereby any excessive gas pressure is automatically dewatered from the casing 7-12, thus ensuring that the tire is inflated completely to the desired pressure (for example, 1436 Pa (30 psi)). As shown in Figures 8A-8F, a further embodiment of the BTATz inflator of the invention comprises an inflator 8-10 which uses a fulminating capsule 8-12 to ignite the loading vessel 8-14 filled with BTATz material 8- 14 In the specific embodiment illustrated, an inflator shell 8-16 comprises a generally rectangular configuration having a peripheral flange 8-18 whose purpose is to thermally seal an inflatable article such as a lifejacket, life raft, evacuation ramp or Similary. The underside of the inflator shell 8-16 includes an exhaust port 8-20 fluidly connected to the interior of the inflatable article to inflate it when firing the cargo vessel 8-14.
Similar to the previous embodiments described above, the loading container 8-14 comprises a generally cylindrical design that is removably installed to the inflator shell 8-16, which preferably seals by means of an O-ring 8-22. The ventilated end cover of the loading container 8-14 allows it to be filled with a desired amount of BTATz material which, upon ignition, produces a desired volume of nitrogen gas to inflate the inflatable article. The ventilated end cover of the cargo container 8-14 comprises a fulminating capsule seat configured to receive a fulminating capsule 8-26. The capsule fulminating 8-26 operates by striking to inject a spark in the charging vessel 8-14 to ignite the BTATz material contained therein. A trigger mechanism, indicated generally by the number 8-28, is provided to strike the capsule fulminating 8-26 one or more times by pulling a lanyard handle to pull 8-30. More specifically, the firing mechanism 8-28 comprises a cylindrical firing hammer 8-32 alternatingly positioned with an elongated hole 8-34 that moves in a forced manner towards the fulminating capsule 8-26 by means of a firing spring 8-34. An O-ring 8-36 is mounted around the trigger hammer 8-22 to seal with hole 8-34, thus preventing any gas leakage nitrogen during the shot. The lanyard handle for pulling 8-30 is coupled to a pivoting actuating lever 8-36. The activation lever 8-36 includes at least one lobe 8-38 aligned with an integral tongue 8-38 extending transversely from the firing hammer 8-32. Pulling the handle to pull 8-30, the lobe 8-38 pulls back the trigger hammer 8-32 against the force of the trigger spring 8-34 when pivoting the activation lever 8-36 until the lobe 8 -38 slides out of tab 8-38 to release spring-loaded trigger part 8-22. When the spring loaded trigger hammer 8-22 is released, the hammer 8-22 is forcedly moved by the spring 8-34 towards the capsule 8-26 to hit it and cause it to fire, thus producing the nitrogen gas which is then dewatered from the loading container 8-14 of the shell 8-16 through the discharge port 8-20 to inflate the inflatable article. As illustrated, preferably the activation lever 8-36 includes several lobes 8-34 (for example, three) such that with a single pull on the handle for pulling 8-30, each of the lobes 8-34 pulls sequentially back the firing hammer 8-32 and then slide out the tongue 8-38, thus firing the hammer 8-32.
A control unit 9-12 receives a signal from a pressure transducer 9-18 when the gas pressure in the storage tank falls below a predetermined level, at which point the control unit 9-12 provides an electrical current to the lighter 9-11 to fire a BTATz charge in the combustion chamber 9-10. The combustion chamber may contain several loads, which may be triggered independently as necessary to maintain the predetermined pressure level in the storage tank 9-6. In the case of an overpressure condition in the storage tank, an emergency pressure relief valve 9-4 opens and releases gas into the atmosphere through an exhaust pipe 9-5. Once the pressure falls to a certain safe level, safety valve 9-4 closes. The present description includes what is contained in the appended claims, as well as in the previous description. Although the present invention has been described in its preferred form with some degree of particularity, it is understood that the present description of the preferred form has been made only by way of example and that changes can be made in the details of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts.
