Description

PACKAGING FOR PLASTIC AEROSOL MOLDED BY BLOWING The present invention relates to aerosol packages in which the package is adapted to maintain the contents under pressure, and more particularly, to a blow molded plastic container for said package. BACKGROUND AND BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Aerosol packaging containers are typically consumed in glass and metal, with the purpose of having sufficient strength to maintain the contents of the package under pressure without distorting it. A general object of the present invention is to provide a blow molded plastic package for aerosol packaging applications in which the body of said package has an oval cross-section, in which the base of the package has a contour to maintain the section Oval cross-section of the container body under the pressure of the spray, and in which the neck end is particularly well adapted to facilitate handling during manufacture. A plastic container for storing aerosol contents under pressure according to the preferred embodiments of the invention now includes a one-piece molded integral plastic body having a base, a side wall and a neck end. The side wall and the base are section oval cross section, and the base has a contour and cross section to maintain said oval cross section under the pressure of the aerosol inside the body of the container. The neck end has an open mouth surrounded by a peripheral and circumferentially conical rim to ensure a closure of the dispenser. The flange has a lower surface that is perpendicular to an axis of the collar neck, and the neck collar has a beveled bottom edge around the mouth to facilitate the insertion of a closure for the dispenser. In the preferred embodiments of the invention, the neck end includes a support shoulder, spaced from the outer rim. The support flange has a peripheral edge with at least one locator element for orienting the oval cross-section in automated equipment for assembling the dispenser closure of the package. The base is preferably a champagne base having a central part, convex oriented outwardly, and a peripheral ring for stopping. The stop to stop preferably has a thickness that is 2 to 2.5 times the thickness of the side wall of the container. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention, in conjunction with the additional objectives, characteristics and advantages thereof, will be better understood from the following description, the appended claims and the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a raised front view of a container of according to a currently preferred embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the container of the Figure 1; Figure 3 is a partially sectioned top plane view of the package in Figure 1; Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale of the part of Figure 3 in area 4; Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional visia on an enlarged scale of the part of Figure 2 in area 5; Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the base of the package in Figures 1 to 3; Figure 7 is a high front view of a package according to another embodiment of the invention; Figure 8 is a partially sectioned top plane view of the package in Figure 7; Figure 9 is a fragmentary sectional view of the part of Figure 8 within the area 9; and Figure 10 is a sectional view of a closure for aerosol dispenser that can be used with the package of Figures 1 to 6 or 7 to 9. Detailed description of the preferred embodiments Figures 1 to 6 illustrate a package (20) of according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. The container (20) is one piece, of medium construction molded by blown, having a body (22) with a base (24), a side wall (26) and a neck end (28). The side wall (26) and the base (24) are of oval construction, as best seen in Fig. 3. The neck end (28) is cylindrical, and has a circumferentially continuous external rim (30) surrounding to the open mouth of the container. The flange (30) has a lower surface (32) that is flat and two-dimensional on an axis perpendicular to the axis of the neck end. The flat bottom surface (32) provides positive alignment with in-feed jaws and outward feed in two-stage elongation and reheat blow molding equipment. Furthermore, the lower surface (32) provides a safety ripple of an aerosol dispenser closure (Figure 10). The inner diameter of the mouth of the container, on the open side of the neck end (28) is beveled at (34) (Figure 5) to facilitate the positioning and securing of the dispenser closure (e.g., Figure 10). The neck end (28) further preferably includes an external support flange (36), sometimes called a cap flange or transfer flange, away from the open mouth of the container. The flange (36) is circumferentially continuous and perpendicular to the axis of the neck end. The flange (36) has a peripheral edge that preferably includes at least one location element (38) to orient the oval cross-section of the container (20). In the embodiment of Figures 1 to 6, the locating element (38) is a notch on the periphery of the flange, aligned with the minor axis of the cross section of the container, as best seen in Figure 3. The notch (38) can be used by an automated capping equipment, to angularly locate the closure of the dispenser with respect to the end of the container such that the closure Dispense the product in a desired orientation with respect to the cross section of the package, as it could be in the direction of the minor axis of the package. The preferred construction of the base of the container (24) is illustrated in Figure 6. The base (24) is preferably one of the so-called champagne base, which has a convex central part facing outward, or dome (40) and a ring peripheral to stop (42). The thickness (44) of the stop ring (42) is 2 to 2.5 times the thickness (46) of the side wall (26) of the container. The base (24) is designed to rigidify the side wall of the container and to maintain the oval contour of the side wall of the container under pressure therein. The contour thickness of the base (24) can be designed either to have a profile of constant thickness around the axis of the container, or to have two unique profiles on the major and minor axes of the cross section of the container, which are combined with each other between the major and minor axes. Figures 7 to 9 illustrate a package (50) according to a second embodiment of the invention. The container (50) is essentially the same as the container (20) in Figures 1 to 6, except for the locating elements on the flange of the neck end support (36). In the modality of Figures 7 to 9, the locating elements on the support flange comprise a pair of projections on diametrically opposite sides of the neck end (28) on the minor axis of the oval cross-section of the container. Figure 10 illustrates a conventional aerosol dispenser closure (60), which includes a metal ring (62) that is threaded onto the flange (30) to secure the closure of the dispenser of the aerosol container of the present invention. The package of the present invention can be made using any suitable manufacturing technique. Preferably the package is made in a reheat blow molding process, in which first a preform is constructed, such as by injection or compression molding., and then the preform is reheated and blow molded to form the container body. The neck end of the package, including the flange (30) and the support flange (36), are preferably formed in the preform stage. The package can be of any suitable plastic material, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and can be a single-layer or multi-layer construction, which includes one or more layers of internal barrier such as nylon or plastic. Ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH). According to another characteristic of the invention, one of the layers of a multi-layer sidewall construction can have a high glass transition temperature Tg, which helps it resist deformation of the container body. By For example, the laminar wall of the container can have a two-layer construction: (1) PET that has a thickness of 0.1 cm (0.042 in) and a glass sition temperature of 70 ° C, and (2) amorphous nylon that has a thickness of 0.07 cm (0.028 in) and a glass sition temperature of 1 15 ° C. Thus, a plastic container and a method for making a plastic container have been described, which is particularly suitable for aerosol applications , and which satisfactorily fulfills the objectives and purposes declared previously. The invention has been described in conjunction with two preferred embodiments presently, and a number of modifications and variations have been discussed. Other modifications and variations will quickly be suggested by themselves to persons of ordinary skill in the art, in light of the above description. It is intended that the invention encompass all such modifications and variations, because they fall within the spirit and broad scope of the appended claims.
