Abstract

Production of molten iron, in an electric arc furnace incorporating several electrodes, equipped with a hearth and containing a heel surmounted by a non-foaming molten slag, consists of: (a) reduction of metallic fines to form pre-reduced metal fines with an excess of free carbon; (b) the hot transfer of the pre-reduced metal fines to the inside of a curtain of inert gas in the heel of the bath contained in the electric arc furnace; (c) stirring of the heel of the bath by gas injection in a manner to avoid the formation of crust; (d) melting of the pre-reduced metal fines in the electric arc furnace to produce molten iron.
