The subject of the present invention is the use of 4- (2-oxo-3-bornylidenemethyl) benzene sulfonic acid and its salts as agents for protecting keratin in the hair against atmospheric attack, and in particular against light, and a method of protecting the hair against atmospheric aggressions, and in particular against light.

We have known for a long time that light attacks hair keratin. Numerous publications disclose that natural light destroys certain amino acids of the hair and that, by altering the hair fiber, it reduces their mechanical properties; the term “reduction in mechanical properties” is understood mainly to mean a decrease in the bearing to 15% extension.

The plateau at 15% extension is the weight that must be applied to a wet hair of a given length to lengthen it by 15%. The higher the weight, the more elastic and resistant the hair.

To fight against the aggression of hair keratin by light, it has already been proposed to use substances capable of filtering light radiation. In particular, well known filter agents have been tried, such as benzophenone derivatives, for example 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone and 2,2'-dihydroxy-4,4'-dimethoxy- 5,5'-disulfobenzophenone disodium or 4 2 also derivatives of dibenzoylmethane, for example 4-tert-butyl-4 * -methoxydibenzoylmethane or p-aminobenzoic acid and its derivatives such as 2-ethylhexyl p-dimethylaminobenzoate, (4'-dimethylaminobenzoyloxyethyl), dimethyl, alkyl (C ^ -C ^ g) ammonium 5 (ESCALOL 537 Q) tosylate, cinnamates such as 2-etbylhexyl p-methoxycinnamate or alternatively 2-phenylbenzimidazole acid 5-sulfonic.

However, these filtering substances have not been found to be effective in preserving the mechanical properties of the hair, namely their elasticity, against the harmful effects of light.

On the contrary, it has appeared that their presence in certain cosmetic compositions could even accentuate the degradation of the mechanical properties, in particular the reduction of the plateau to 15% of extension.

The Applicant has now surprisingly discovered that 4- (2-oxo-3 ~ bornylidenemethyl) benzene sulfonic acid and its salts could preserve the mechanical properties of the hair from degradation by light. This property could be demonstrated by exposure to natural light (sunny environment) and artificial light (xenon emitter of an accelerated aging device of the SUNTEST HANAU type).

The subject of the present invention is therefore the use of 4- (2-oxo-3-bornylidenemethyl) benzene sulfonic acid and its salts as agents for protecting the mechanical properties of the hair, and essentially the level 15 % wet extension, against degradation caused by atmospheric aggressions, and in particular by light.

By salts of the abovementioned sulfonic acid is meant the metal and more particularly alkaline, alkaline-earth salts, or the ammonium and amine salts.

According to the present invention, the abovementioned sulfonic acid or its salts are used to preserve the mechanical properties of the hair from light aggressions, in amounts at least equal to 0.3% by weight of free acid (before possible neutralization ), and preferably between 0.4% and 9% by weight, in a cosmetically acceptable carrier. The minimum amount of 0.3% corresponds to a molar concentration per 100 g of composition of approximately 0.9 millimole of acid which can be used in free form or salified with a metal hydroxide, ammonia or an amine.

The sulfonic acid or its salts according to the invention can be used to protect natural or sensitized hair. The term "sensitized hair" means hair which has undergone a treatment for perming, coloring or bleaching.

The cosmetic compositions for hair, used in accordance with the invention, to protect them against degradation by light and containing as active compound 4- (2-oxo-3-bornylidenemethyl) benzene sulfonic acid and its salts, may be in the form of aqueous, alcoholic or hydroalcoholic solutions or dispersions (the alcohol usually being a lower alkanol such as ethanol or isopropanol), thickened or not, creams, gels, foams aerosols or sprays and contain the adjuvants usually used in hair compositions and suitable for the intended application.

These compositions may or may not be followed by rinsing and may constitute shampoos, conditioners, rinses to be applied before or after shampooing, before or after coloring or discoloration, before or after perming or straightening, compositions leave-in rinses such as lotions, gels, creams, sprays or foams for styling, for brushing, hairsprays or sprays for maintaining the hairstyle and restructuring compositions.

When the cosmetic compositions used according to the invention constitute compositions which are not followed by rinsing, 4- (2-oxo-3-bornylidenemethyl) benzene sulfonic acid or its salts, as active agent preserving the mechanical properties hair against light, is present in an amount of 0.3 to 5% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition, and preferably in an amount of 0.4 to 3.5% by weight of free acid.

The cosmetic compositions for hair according to the invention have a pH of between 2 and 9, and preferably between 4 and 8.

The cosmetic compositions used according to the invention may also contain cosmetic agents well known in the art, provided that they do not themselves alter the mechanical properties of hair keratin.

The adjuvants or cosmetic agents generally present in the cosmetic compositions used according to the invention are, for example, cationic, anionic, amphoteric, nonionic surfactants or their mixtures, thickeners, anionic, cationic, nonionic polymers, amphoteric or mixtures thereof, softeners, preservatives, foaming agents, foam stabilizers, electrolytes, pH regulating agents, anti-fat agents, sequestering agents, perfumes, dyes, propellants , organic solvents.

Cationic, anionic, nonionic, amphoteric surfactants or mixtures thereof are generally used in proportions of 0.1 to 50% by weight, and preferably from 0.5 to 30% by weight relative to the weight total of the composition.

When the cosmetic compositions for hair used according to the invention constitute shampoos, these are essentially characterized in that they contain, in addition to the sulfonic acid or its salts defined above, at least one anionic surfactant , non-ionic, cationic, amphoteric or a mixture of such surfactants, in an aqueous medium. To form a foam, it is preferred to use a combination of cationic polymer and anionic polymer, at least one of the two polymers being foaming in aqueous solution. An anionic polymer containing units of acrylic or methacrylic acids, crotonic acid or unsaturated (X-dicarboxylic acids) is preferably used as film-forming resin.
