[고안의 배경][Design background]
밸브와 파이프, 파이프와 파이프등을 연결시 연결되는 일측에는 내부에 암나사가 형성된 커플링을 부착시키고 타측에는 숫나사를 형성시켜 상호연결시키는 경우가 종종 있다. 이러한 경우 밸브와 파이프, 파이프와 파이프등의 연결되는 부분에서 파이프내부에서 유동되고 있는 물질들이 외부로 흘러나오지 않게 하기위해 커플링내부에 패킹을 집어넣고 밸브와 파이프, 파이프등을 연결시킨다. 이경우 커플링 내부로 삽입되는 종래의 패킹은 단면이 원형이고 전체적으로는 링형인 형태를 하고 있다. 종래의 패킹은 형태가 단순한 링형이므로 커플링내부에 꽉 밀착될수 없었다. 그러므로 밸브와 파이프, 파이프와 파이프를 연결시키기 위해 내부에 종래의 패킹이 삽입되어 있는 커플링이 부착된 밸브 또는 파이프를 움직이면 커플링 내부에 삽입되어 있는 종래의 패킹은 커플링 바같으로 빠져버리거나 또는 커플링내부에서도 정위치에 있지 않고 종종 위치가 틀려지곤 하였다. 그러므로 종래의 패킹을 써서 밸브와 파이프, 파이프와 파이프를 연결시키려면 패킹을 정위치시키기 위하여 여러번의 시도를 거쳐야 하는 불편함이 있었다. 일례로 일반가정에서 사용되는 세탁기의 급수밸브와 수도꼭지에서 급수밸브로 연결되는 호스를 급수밸브와 연결시키는 작업을 들수 있다. 즉 세탁기에 부착되어 있는 급수밸브의 입수구는 숫나사가 형성되어 있는 일종의 파이프이다. 그리고 호스와 급수밸브의 입수구와 연결시키는 것은 일종의 커플링이다. 이 커플링과 세탁기 급수밸브를 연결시키려면 물이 새지 않도록 커플링내부에 패킹을 끼워야 한다. 그러나 종래의 패킹은 커플링으로부터 잘 빠지기 때문에 커플링과 급수밸브를 연결시키는데 큰 어려움이 있어 왔다.When connecting valves and pipes, pipes and pipes are often connected to each other by attaching a coupling formed with a female thread inside and a male thread on the other side.
