Claims (13)

A pharmaceutical composition comprising a crystalline sugar alcohol derived from at least one monosaccharide or polysaccharide in which particles of at least one pharmaceutically active compound are uniformly dispersed in a crystal matrix. The composition of claim 1 wherein the sugar alcohol is selected from the group consisting of sorbitol, mannitol, sorbitol and mannitol, xylitol, maltitol, lactitol, cellobiitol and hydrogenated starch hydrolysate crystallized together. The composition of claim 1 wherein the sugar alcohol is sorbitol. The composition of claim 1 wherein the sugar alcohols are sorbitol and mannitol crystallized together. The composition of claim 4 wherein the sorbitol comprises about 5- about 15 weight percent mannitol. The compound of claim 1, wherein the pharmaceutically active compound is selected from salts and oxides of alkali and alkaline earth metals; Mineral supplements of iron, manganese, copper and zinc; Aspartamine; saccharin; Phenylpropanolamine HCL; Ibuprofen; Cimetidine; Athenol; A composition selected from the group consisting of acetaminodene and aspirin. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is in tablet form. The composition of claim 1 wherein the composition is in the form of chewing gum. (A) to form a molten sugar alcohol derived from at least one monosaccharide or polysaccharide, (B) to disperse at least one particle of the pharmaceutically active substance in the molten sugar alcohol under the conditions under which a homogeneous mixture is made, and (C) A pharmaceutical composition with uniformly dispersed microparticles of the pharmaceutically active compound, consisting of stirring the molten homogeneous mixture while stirring until a viscous mass is formed, and (D) slowly cooling the mass until the sugar alcohol is a complete crystal.
