Organometallic, end-capped polyphthalaldehydes having repeating units of the general formula (I) Wherein R ¹ , R ² , R ³ and R ⁴ are each independently hydrogen, halogen, cyano, nitro, carboxyl, hydroxyl, C ₁ -C ₄ alkoxy, C ₁ -C ₄ alkylthio or C ₁ -C ₄ alkoxycarbonyl and at least one of the substituents R ¹ , R ² , R ³ and R ⁴ is -O (R ⁵ ) | _s or —O (R ⁶ ) ₃ group, wherein O is Si, Sn, Ge, CH ₂ -Si or O-Si, R ⁵ is C ₁ -C ₁₂ alkyl, and R ⁶ is C ₆ -C ₁₀ aryl.
