Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an electrolysis cell and an ammonia electrolysis system including the same, and more specifically, to separate components capable of decomposing ammonia into nitrogen and hydrogen by an electrochemical method and separating the decomposed nitrogen and hydrogen, and It relates to an electrolysis cell that does not require a process and does not generate nitrogen oxides (NOx) during the decomposition of ammonia, and an ammonia electrolysis system including the same.
Traditionally, electrical energy is produced by converting energy generated by burning fossil fuels. Fossil fuels usually contain carbon (C), nitrogen (N), etc., and carbon oxides and nitrogen oxides are generated during combustion.
As industrialization progresses, carbon oxides and nitrogen oxides generated by burning fossil fuels cause various problems such as environmental destruction and global warming. Accordingly, research on technologies for utilizing eco-friendly energy sources for sustainable growth is being actively conducted.
As part of such research, a fuel cell utilizing hydrogen as an energy source may be exemplified. A fuel cell is a device that generates electrical energy by electrochemically reacting a fuel and an oxidizer. For example, the fuel cell may be configured to directly convert chemical energy generated during a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen into electrical energy.
In this case, only water (H 2 O) is discharged as a by-product of the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Accordingly, development of a vehicle using a fuel cell is actively progressing as it is more advantageous than a conventional internal combustion engine from an eco-friendly point of view.
Current commercialized fuel cells operate by receiving hydrogen from an external source. However, it is not easy for drivers to secure hydrogen due to safety issues and low penetration of hydrogen charging stations. This causes a decrease in the penetration rate of vehicles utilizing fuel cells.
In order to overcome this, research is being conducted on a method of providing a hydrogen compound rather than hydrogen to a vehicle and directly supplying hydrogen to a fuel cell by decomposing the hydrogen compound inside the vehicle. As an example, a method of using ammonia (NH 3 ) as a hydrogen source may be mentioned.
However, when ammonia is decomposed, not only hydrogen but also nitrogen is generated. Generated nitrogen is highly likely to be synthesized into nitrogen oxides by reacting with oxygen from the fuel cell or from the outside, which may cause another environmental pollution. In addition, ammonia has a high explosive potential depending on its phase.
Furthermore, not all of the ammonia supplied is decomposed into nitrogen and hydrogen, and some may remain as ammonia. If the remaining ammonia leaks out, it may cause fatal damage to the human body.
Therefore, in order to operate a fuel cell using ammonia, it is necessary to have a plan to suppress the generation of nitrogen oxides, prevent safety accidents such as explosions, and recover residual ammonia to prevent any leakage to the outside. do.
Accordingly, technologies for generating hydrogen using ammonia have been introduced.

Korean Patent Publication No. 10-2008-0110901 discloses a device for decomposing liquid ammonia into gaseous nitrogen and hydrogen. Specifically, an apparatus for decomposing liquid ammonia into gaseous nitrogen and hydrogen, capable of extracting hydrogen from liquid ammonia and providing it to a vehicle by using two reactors and a microwave resonator performing thermal catalytic decomposition, is disclosed.
However, the apparatus for decomposing liquid ammonia into gaseous nitrogen and hydrogen disclosed in the prior art document only discloses a concept for providing hydrogen to a fuel cell using ammonia. That is, the prior art documents also do not provide a method for solving the above-described problems that may occur during ammonia decomposition.
Furthermore, the prior art documents assume that ammonia is thermally decomposed to produce nitrogen and hydrogen, and do not provide a method for decomposing ammonia by an electrochemical method.

In addition, according to another aspect of the present invention, the mixer to which ammonia is supplied; an electrolysis cell communicated with the mixer and configured to receive the supplied ammonia and electrolyze it into at least two different fluids; and a fluid separator communicating with the electrolytic cell to receive the electrolyzed at least two different fluids and separating the ammonia remaining in the received at least two different fluids, wherein the electrolysis cell comprises: an electrolysis cell housing communicating with the mixer and having a space for receiving and accommodating the ammonia; an anode and a cathode accommodated in the space of the electrolysis cell housing and electrically connected to an external control unit to electrolyze the received ammonia; and a membrane member disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode to physically separate the positive electrode and the negative electrode, wherein the membrane member prevents ions generated from one of the positive electrode and the negative electrode from moving to the other one. An ammonia electrolytic system formed of an ionomer material that blocks the ammonia may be provided.
According to the electrolysis cell and the ammonia electrolysis system including the same according to an embodiment of the present invention, the following effects can be achieved.
First, ammonia supplied from the bomb enters the electrolysis cell. The electrolytic cell is energized and connected to the control unit, and receives current from the control unit. The electrolysis cell electrochemically decomposes the ammonia by using the current applied from the control unit.
Thus, ammonia can be decomposed into nitrogen and hydrogen without separate chemical or physical processes and means to do so.
In addition, the electrolytic cell is equipped with an anode and a cathode. The current applied from the control unit is conducted to the anode and cathode. Ammonia introduced into the electrolysis cell is separated into nitrogen and hydrogen by electrochemical reactions that proceed at the anode and cathode, respectively.
Each space of the electrolytic cell accommodating the anode and cathode is physically separated by a membrane member. Since the positive electrode and the negative electrode are not in physical communication with each other, nitrogen and gas generated from the positive electrode and the negative electrode are not mixed with each other.
Each space of the electrolytic cell accommodating the anode and the cathode communicates with different fluid separators through separate discharge passages. Therefore, nitrogen and hydrogen generated in each space can flow to different fluid separators through separate discharge passages.
Therefore, nitrogen and hydrogen generated by electrolysis in the electrolytic cell can be discharged to the outside without being mixed, and no additional process and equipment for separating nitrogen and hydrogen are required.
In addition, ammonia in a liquid phase or gas liquid may be accommodated in the cylinder. The temperature, pressure and water level of the mixer receiving ammonia from the cylinder may be controlled by the control unit.
The control unit is configured to perform temperature adjustment or pressure adjustment for phase change of ammonia supplied to the mixer into a liquid phase or a gas phase. The control unit is configured to control not only the mixer but also the temperature and pressure of the electrolysis cell, the fluid separator and the utility unit.
Therefore, no matter what phase ammonia, which is used as a raw material for electrolyzing hydrogen and nitrogen, is provided, it can be introduced into the electrolysis cell after being changed to a phase that is more advantageous for the operation of the ammonia electrolysis system. As a result, the selectivity of the ammonia phase can be improved.
In addition, nitrogen and hydrogen electrolyzed from ammonia in the electrolysis cell are passed through a fluid separator and then transferred to a subsequent process. Residual ammonia separated from nitrogen and hydrogen in the fluid separator is returned to the cylinder and fed back to the mixer.
The controller calculates control information for controlling the operation of each component of the ammonia electrolysis system using information sensed by each sensor unit provided in the ammonia electrolysis system. When the ammonia electrolysis system is normally operated, the control unit controls each component so that the recovered ammonia and additionally supplied ammonia flow back to the mixer.
Therefore, supply of ammonia, electrolysis of ammonia, discharge of decomposed nitrogen and hydrogen, and recovery of separated residual ammonia can be continuously performed.
In addition, a plurality of electrolysis cells may be provided and stacked. The plurality of electrolytic cells communicate with a mixer for supplying ammonia and a fluid separator for treating the electrolyzed fluid, respectively. At this time, the plurality of electrolytic cells may communicate with the mixer and the fluid separator through separate flow paths. That is, the operation of any one or more electrolytic cells of the plurality of electrolytic cells does not affect the operation of one or more other electrolytic cells.
Therefore, the electrolytic capacity of ammonia can be adjusted according to the environment in which the ammonia electrolysis system is provided. As a result, the amount of hydrogen generated by electrolysis of ammonia by the ammonia electrolysis system can be adjusted as needed, so that the system can be increased in capacity or reduced in capacity.
In addition, as described above, nitrogen and hydrogen produced by electrolysis of ammonia in the electrolysis cell may be discharged to the outside of the electrolysis cell through a separate passage without a separate separation process. Therefore, nitrogen and hydrogen may be respectively introduced into the plurality of fluid separators communicating with the electrolysis cell. In particular, the fluid separator into which nitrogen is introduced is communicated with an external storage space or a device for a denitrification process, so that nitrogen can be separately stored or discharged to the outside after passing through a denitration process.
Therefore, even if the ammonia electrolysis system is operated and ammonia is electrolyzed, generated nitrogen is not arbitrarily discharged into the atmosphere. As a result, generation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) generated when nitrogen generated as a result of electrolysis reacts with oxygen may be minimized.
In addition, as described above, ammonia may be decomposed into nitrogen and hydrogen by an electrochemical method rather than a physical or chemical method. In order to electrolyze ammonia, the control unit energized with the electrolysis cell may be configured to apply a small current.
Thus, the amount of energy required to electrolyze ammonia into nitrogen and hydrogen can be minimized. As a result, the economic cost required for the provision and operation of the ammonia electrolysis system can be reduced.

Hereinafter, the configuration of the
In the illustrated embodiment, the
(1) Description of the
The
The
As is known, the melting point of ammonia, i.e. the temperature at which ammonia needs to exist in the liquid phase, can change with pressure. Specifically, the temperature at which ammonia exists in a liquid phase tends to increase with an increase in pressure.
However, in order to prevent safety accidents during operation of the
Therefore, the
Furthermore, communication between the
In the illustrated embodiment, the
The
The space of the
An
In one example, the other end of the extension direction of the
The
In other words, the
To open and close the

3. Description of the ammonia electrolysis system 20 according to another embodiment of the present invention
Referring to FIG. 7 , an ammonia electrolysis system 20 according to another embodiment of the present invention is shown.
Compared to the
To this end, the separated ammonia may be re-supplied to the
In this case, the fluid flowing through the return passage (reference numeral not indicated) may include additives previously supplied from the
In addition, a power source such as a pump (not shown) may be provided so that the separated ammonia flows into the
According to the ammonia electrolysis system 20 according to the present embodiment, residual ammonia remaining after separation into nitrogen and hydrogen through the electrolysis process among initially supplied ammonia without a process of resupply after the separated ammonia is discharged is mixed with the
Thus, a system for circulation of ammonia can be constructed, so that generation of residual ammonia can be minimized. Accordingly, the configuration of the system can be simplified, and the number of additional ammonia supplies can be reduced, so that the effect can be maximized when provided in a vehicle or the like.

Meanwhile, as described above, when the temperature and pressure of the
Accordingly, the

In addition, the ionic additive is supplied to the inner space of the

The measured pressure of the electrolytic cell 200 (ie, the pressure after electrolysis is performed) and the pressure before power is applied to the electrolytic cell 200 (ie, the pressure before electrolysis is performed after ammonia is introduced) When the difference in pressure of the
Accordingly, the
(S440).As described above, a plurality of
In an embodiment in which ammonia is electrolyzed into nitrogen and hydrogen, nitrogen may flow to the
Accordingly, the at least two different fluids electrolyzed in the

This step (S500) is a step (S500) in which ammonia mixed with at least two different fluids introduced into the
(S510). First, at least two different fluids electrolyzed from ammonia supplied to the
In one embodiment, it is as described above that ammonia may be separated into nitrogen and hydrogen and flow into the
The different fluids introduced into the
Through this step (S520), ammonia that has been mixed with each fluid (ie, nitrogen and hydrogen in one embodiment) generated by electrolysis of ammonia can be separated. However, the control method of the
(S530).Specifically, the different fluids from which ammonia is separated inside the
At this time, since the
Accordingly, different fluids that have passed through the
Meanwhile, ammonia remaining after electrolysis through this step (S500) may be directly supplied again to the cylinder B or the
(6) Description of the step (S600) in which ammonia is further supplied from the
In this step (S600), ammonia separated from the fluid generated through the above-described steps (S100 to S500) and additional ammonia are further supplied to the
First, the
As described above, the
The
(S630).When the pressure of the
In this case, the preset first reference pressure may be determined as an arbitrary value to which ammonia should be additionally supplied in order for the ammonia electrolysis process to further proceed in the
By this step (S630), ammonia is additionally supplied to the
(7) Description of the step (S700) of the
In this step (S700), the
(S710). The
Specifically, the
The
First, a step in which the
When the sensed voltage of the
Next, a step in which the
When the detected pressure of the
In addition, when the detected pressure of the
(S732).Accordingly, the
To this end, it is as described above that the
Next, a step in which the
The
That is, when ammonia smaller than the reference water level is accommodated in the
(S742).Accordingly, when the detected level of ammonia is lower than the reference level, the
The control method of the
