Abstract

Disposable diffusing collar stays are provided that can slowly release volatile molecules, such as perfumes, insect repellents, etc., without the need to directly apply them to the skin or to spray these volatile molecules onto the skin or clothing of the wearer. The collar of a shirt is often the visual focal point of a garment because of its proximity to the wearer's face, and especially when a jacket, waistcoat, or other garment is worn over the rest of the shirt. Accordingly, it has long been desirable to straighten and stiffen shirt collars prior to wearing to enhance the collar and, by extension, the visual appeal of the shirt and its wearer.

Collar stays are one of the known methods for straightening and stiffening shirt collars, especially collar points. Modern shirt collars typically have a pre-sown pocket on the underside of the collar point for insertion of collar stays. These collar stays are typically made from durable, reusable materials such as metal and plastic, and can help enhance the visual aspect of a shirt.

The collar/facial area is also the center of other senses, including the sense of smell. For this reason, users of fragrances (eg, perfumes, colognes, insect repellents) often apply fragrances to the neck and collar area on the collar and fabric of the shirt, on the skin, or both. While these direct application methods allow the wearer and his or her companion to benefit from the fragrance, these methods do not react well with certain ingredients of the fragrance (e.g. irritation, allergy, fabric degradation) on fabrics and skin. It has an obvious disadvantage in that it is necessary to apply directly.

Although reusable directional collar stays are known, for example, from Shweky, International Patent Publication No. WO2009/015006, there remains a need for disposable diffusing collar stays that allow the wearer to easily and conveniently change collar stays and fragrances.

The disposable diffusing collar stays presented herein can be used so that the wearer can enjoy the benefits of stiffening and straightening the collar of the wearer's shirt while using the perfume without applying it directly to clothing or skin. The disclosed subject matter is particularly suitable for use with perfumes, colognes, insect repellents for wearers with sensitive skin or for garments of delicate fabrics.

According to the disclosed subject matter, as embodied and broadly described herein, a disposable diffusing collar stay consists of a water-soluble substrate in which volatile molecules are absorbed within the substrate or trapped between layers of the substrate, or a rigid body to which volatile molecules are applied within its cavities. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Various exemplary embodiments of the disclosed subject matter shown in the accompanying drawings will now be described in detail. The structure and corresponding method of operation of the disclosed subject matter will be described along with this detailed description.

The accompanying drawings further illustrate various embodiments in accordance with the disclosed subject matter and serve to explain all of the various principles and advantages. For purposes of explanation and illustration and not limitation, exemplary embodiments of a disposable diffusing collar stay in accordance with the disclosed subject matter are shown in FIGS. 1-14 . Disposable diffusing collar stays are suitable for use with a variety of garments, such as, but not limited to, for example, shirt collars, shirt cuffs, jacket lapels, and the like.

For purposes of illustration and not limitation, reference is now made to FIG. 1 illustrating an embodiment of a disposable diffusing collar stay. In this embodiment, the volatile molecules of perfume are absorbed onto the water-soluble substrate of the disposable diffusing collar stay (1). In certain embodiments, the disposable diffusing collar stays may be printed on the collar stays, preferably using water soluble ink, to indicate the name of the perfume absorbed, since they are water soluble.

2 is a plan view of a pair of disposable diffusing collar stays and packaging in accordance with one embodiment. In an embodiment, one or more pairs of collar stays 1 may be sealed to the package 2 . In some embodiments, the disposable diffusing collar stays are preferably packaged in a peelable label 4 as shown in FIG. 3 . In an embodiment, the label may be composed of two layers sealed together, one top layer and one bottom layer. The seal 5 can be separated by the user pulling the tab located on one side 6 .

Another embodiment of a disposable diffusing collar stay is shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 . In an embodiment, volatile molecules of perfume are disposed between two substrates 1 of a disposable diffusing collar stay (FIG. 5). In an embodiment, one or both substrates include a cavity 7 containing perfume. In certain embodiments, the two substrates may be sealed together and contain volatile molecules of perfume. In such embodiments, volatile molecules can be released by diffusing through the substrate.

In an embodiment, the disposable diffusing collar stay 1 may be wrapped or coated with another water soluble polymer such as a polyvinyl alcohol film to control the release of volatile molecules and prevent the garment from soiling.

In some embodiments, the color stays may be printed, for example, to refer to the name or brand of perfume used. In some embodiments, such printing uses water-based inks that dissolve with the material, preferably during laundering.

In some embodiments, a coating or film may be applied to the substrate surface of the disposable diffusing collar stay to reduce diffusion of volatile molecules. In some embodiments, water-soluble coatings or films may be used.

In some embodiments of disposable diffusing collar stays, some additives such as waxes, polymers, and liquids may be added to the volatile molecules to control release.

In some embodiments, the substrate of the disposable diffusing collar stay comprises a cellulosic water soluble material such as SmartSolve paper or Aquasol paper, gelatin, polyvinyl alcohol, carrageenan, and alginate.

In other embodiments, the material used to make the molded body of the disposable diffusing collar stay may consist of one or more layers. Such materials may include cyclic olefin copolymers (COC), high density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG), paper, and polylactic acid. Such materials may have one or more coatings to control the diffusion of volatile molecules through the shaped body and, in embodiments, to seal the permeable membrane and release layer, as described below.

In an embodiment, the molded body of the disposable diffusing collar stay is preferably made from a recyclable or compostable material. An example of a recyclable material is single-layer polyethylene with an aluminum oxide coating. An example of a compostable material is polylactic acid.

In an embodiment of a disposable diffusing collar stay, the shaped body includes a cavity that can contain volatile molecules of a perfume. These molecules may be deposited directly into the cavity or adsorbed onto a material (eg, paper, sponge, nonwoven material, powder) disposed within the cavity. One or more solvents may be added to the substance/fragrance to modulate (increase or decrease) the diffusion of volatile molecules through the permeable membrane.

Disposable diffusing collar stays may in some embodiments include a permeable (or semi-permeable) membrane. The permeable membrane is permeable to volatile molecules and controls the diffusion of volatile molecules from the collar stays. In some embodiments, the membrane is bonded or sealed onto the molded body. Examples of permeable membranes used in accordance with the disclosed subject matter include polymers such as polyethylene, poly(ethylene vinyl acetate), and other permeable resins.

In other embodiments, the volatile molecule can be mixed with one or more additives such as waxes, polymers, resins, and powders to transform liquids into gels, powders, waxes, or solids. This modification prevents leakage of volatile molecules in case of poor sealing, for example, and avoids the use of a membrane permeable to volatile molecules.

In an embodiment, the disposable diffusing collar stay comprises a release barrier layer attached to a molded body or permeable membrane. The release layer will include one or more impermeable (or mostly impermeable) layers to volatile molecules disposed within the formed cavity, thereby preventing significant amounts of volatile molecules from escaping while the collar stay is sealed.

In some embodiments, the permeability of the release barrier layer is such that the wearer can smell the contained fragrance by sniffing through the barrier layer proximate to the collar stays ("testing") the diffusion of fragrance through the barrier layer to a certain degree. Permissible, but may be adjusted to not release significant amounts of flavor prior to opening. Alternatively, the wearer sniffs a fragrance-containing material (e.g., a scratch-and-sniff tester) disposed on the outer surface of a barrier layer, packaging, or other material to detect a seal. The fragrance of the collar stays can be tested. This allows the wearer to test the fragrance without opening the barrier layer and without releasing significant amounts of fragrance from the collar stay itself.

Suitable materials for the release barrier layer include nylon, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymers, silicon oxide (SiOx), and the like.

In an embodiment of a disposable diffusing collar stay, the release barrier layer may be printed to indicate, for example, the name or brand of the perfume being loaded into the cavity.

In some embodiments, the disposable diffusing collar stay includes a color indicator added to the volatile molecule to indicate to the wearer when the collar stay can or should be replaced. Examples of such color indicators include dyes or pigments added to volatile molecules loaded into the cavity; As the perfume diffuses, the liquid containing the volatiles decreases, leaving behind dyes or pigments, which become darker as they are concentrated.

Another example of a color indicator involves the use of a halochromic substance with an acid or alkali that changes color when the pH of a perfume medium changes during its evaporation. In an embodiment, the halochromic material is dissolved in water containing fragrance. Acids or alkalis present or added to perfumes cause a change in pH during evaporation of the perfume medium. A change in pH due to evaporation of an acid or base or water simultaneously with flavor evaporation causes a color change in the halochromic material.

For purposes of illustration and not limitation, reference is now made to FIGS. 7 and 8 illustrating an embodiment of a disposable diffusing collar stay. In this embodiment, the disposable diffusing collar stay is optional attached (eg, by sealing or gluing) to the molded body 11, the cavity 12 for holding the fragrance or fragrance-containing material, the molded body 11 a permeable layer (13) and a release barrier layer (14) removably attached (eg, by a removable adhesive) to the permeable layer (13). The release layer 14 can also be removably attached to the molded body 11 .

A molded body 11 having a cavity 12 is filled with a solid perfume (eg wax or resin), and a release layer 14 is attached to the molded body 11 . In this embodiment, the selectively permeable membrane 13 (FIGS. 7-10) is not used.

13 shows an embodiment of a disposable diffusing collar stay in use on a shirt collar 18. In this embodiment, as shown in FIG. 13(a), the collar stay has a release barrier layer 14. After removing the release barrier layer 14 as shown in FIG. 13(b), the collar stay now includes a molded body 11 having a cavity 12 as shown in FIG. 13(c). The collar stay is then placed within the shirt collar 18 as shown in FIG. 13(d). Volatile molecules can diffuse through the selectively permeable layer 13 (or directly from the cavity 12 if the permeable layer 13 is not used) to release the fragrance.

A color changing indicator for a disposable diffusing collar stay in accordance with some embodiments of the disclosed subject matter is shown in FIG. 14 . When a color indicator is added to the volatile molecules loaded into the cavity 12, the liquid containing the volatile material decreases as the perfume diffuses, leaving a dye or pigment, which becomes darker as it is concentrated. This progression is illustrated in Figures 14(a)-(c).

Two exemplary embodiments of disposable diffusing collar stays according to the present disclosure will now be described.

Example 1

Smartsolve Company's water soluble paper (IT117198) 30 pt Facestock is cut into a color stay shape. A mixture of 50% ethanol, 30% dipropylene glycol and 20% perfume oil is then absorbed onto the collar stays. The collar stays are then placed in sealed plastic packages to prevent evaporation of the fragrance prior to use. After opening the sealed package, the wearer inserts the collar stay into the garment (eg, shirt collar). During use, fragrance diffuses from the collar stay, and the wearer and companion can enjoy the fragrance as well as the color enhancing effect of the collar stay. Because the collar stays are made of a water-soluble material (IT117198 30 pt Facestock from Smartsolve Company in this example), the wearer does not need to remove the collar stays after use, but instead wear the garment with the collar stays inside. can be washed Water-soluble substances will completely dissolve in water during washing.

Example 2

A film of 300 micron cyclic olefin copolymer is thermoformed on a BlisterMate machine to produce a colored stay form with a sunken cavity. The cavity is then filled with flavoring oil. A low density polyethylene film (30 micron) with a release barrier layer is sealed on the thermoform. Perfume diffusion in the disposable diffusing collar stay begins when the wearer peels off the barrier layer.
