Description
The present invention relates to a method of obtaining a backing plate for a brake pad. The invention also relates to a backing plate of a brake pad obtained by this method.
Brake pads for disc brakes include a backing plate that includes a rear surface and a front surface that are essentially parallel to each other. A layer of friction material is adhered to the front surface. A friction material is applied to the front surface of the backing plate at a predefined engagement portion that generally occupies a majority of the available area on the front surface. This engaging part of the backing plate is also surrounded without interruption by the free peripheral area, ie the area which is not intended to be covered with friction material. A perimeter area free of friction material is mainly needed for working requirements. The width of the free area is generally kept to a minimum, mainly because of weight reasons, it is disadvantageous that the total area of the front surface of the backing plate is larger than the effective area for the braking effect. The minimum width of this free area, typically measured along the longitudinal flanks of the backing plate, may vary from a few tenths of a millimeter to a few millimeters.
During operation of the brake assembly, ie, during braking, the brake pad is brought against the disk in a direction substantially perpendicular to the rotational surface of the disk. During braking, the friction material layer provided to the brake pad is exposed to a force that is mainly tangential to the rotational movement of the disc. The tangential force develops in the plane of the brake pad parallel to the disc and tends to dislodge the friction material by peeling it from the back plate. During braking, in addition to these tangential forces, there are also other forces directed in several directions. In particular, there is a force perpendicular to the surface of the brake pad and generated by vibration. Vibrations occur during the action of the brake pad on the disc as a result of possible alignment errors, for example in the relative movement of the parts. Also, a portion of the kinetic energy of the disc is converted into heat during braking. The heat generated in this way generally causes an increase in the temperature of the material from which the brake pads are made. An increase in temperature can cause a weakening of the bond holding the friction material on the backing plate, thereby risking the material detaching. The greater the braking action exerted on the rotating disc by the brake assembly, the stronger the force acting on the friction material during braking. When this force overcomes the opposing force holding the friction material attached to the back plate, separation and destruction of the friction material or parts thereof occurs, thus creating a risk or loss to the braking effect.
Therefore, one of the problems to be solved when manufacturing the brake pad is a method of preventing the separation of the friction material during use. Several solutions are known in the art to improve the adhesion of the friction material to the backing plate.
A first solution to this problem proposes to fabricate a protrusion on the front surface of the backing plate intended to receive the friction material. During manufacture of the brake pad, friction material is deposited onto the surface of the backing plate. Once the friction material layer is cured, the projections remain embedded in the layer. The protrusions penetrating into the friction material layer thus serve to prevent the friction material from separating from the backing plate when a shear force, even a strong force, is applied. According to the prior art, these projections can be obtained, for example, by deposition of a material that can be welded to the front surface of the backing plate. US 4,991,697 describes an example of a solution of this type. According to another known solution, the projection can also be obtained by removing material from the surface of the backing plate, for example by means of a movable blade. Cutting the surface of the backing plate by means of a movable blade results in a partial removal of the material, thereby creating a corresponding recess. The material removed by the movable blade is raised from the surface of the backing plate, but not completely separated. The material removed thus remains elevated, thereby creating a protrusion or burr. Each projection is associated with a corresponding mating recess, but this is not the main purpose of working with the movable blade. The protrusions and corresponding mating recesses thus obtained can be distributed in a random manner, for example as described in
However, the solution of how to prevent the friction material from separating is not effectively solved by the known solution. In practice, these solutions generally deal with adhering the friction material to any flat surface. However, it has been demonstrated in practice that the problem of separation of the friction material from the brake pad does not affect the surface of the brake pad uniformly. Also the results obtained by the known solutions are not constant when changing some parameters of the brake pads. Parameters which can influence the characteristics of the known solutions are in particular the type of steel from which the backing plate is made, the type of friction material, the size and shape of the backing plate and the size of the brake disc. The type of material from which the backing plate is made and its thickness determine, for example, its ability to dissipate heat. The shape of the backing plate and the shape of the disk determine the strength and direction of the shear force applied to the friction material. The granulometry, density and binder used in the mixture of friction materials makes the above-described method somewhat effective as these parameters vary.
Therefore, it is possible to obtain better and more uniform results when changing the type of brake pad to be manufactured, by solving the problem of a method of improving the adhesion of friction material to the backing plate by avoiding the occurrence of separation when these parameters are changed. There is a strong need in the industry to do this.
The main object of the present invention is to solve the above-mentioned problems by providing a method for obtaining a backing plate of a brake pad which improves the adhesion of the friction material to the brake pad.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a method of the above-mentioned type which is easy to implement and cost-effective and thus suitable for use on a large scale in industry.
These and other objects are achieved by a method and a backing plate as claimed in the appended claims.
The present invention is based on the principle that the mating recesses provided on the surface of the backing plate, if properly distributed, can achieve the desired result without the need to provide protrusions or burrs per se. The absence of protrusions or roughness makes it possible to fabricate the backing plate in a coining manufacturing process. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the mating surface for the friction material is thus smooth, ie is free from roughness except for such fines due to normal manufacturing tolerances, thus advantageously obtaining a brake pad easier to use for subsequent fabrication steps to Advantageously, the imprint punch can be provided in the same blanking mold for the backing plate. In this way, subsequent workpiece re-machining operations are avoided, and consequently manufacturing costs are saved. Providing the imprint punch in the same blanking mold also allows a high degree of flexibility in the definition and distribution of the shape of the recess. In addition, changes in the distribution and shape of the recesses and maintenance of the mold are simplified. Furthermore, the advantage of the cutting method by imprinting is that the opening of the engaging recess in an arbitrary manner, unlike the case where a movable cutting blade is used which makes it possible to orient the recess only along a single direction of travel of the movable blade. is derived from the possibility of orienting The adoption of the indentation method thus makes it possible to distribute the engagement recesses over the surface of the backing plate in a predetermined manner that is optimal relative to the applied force generated by the precarious parameter. As a result, the backing plate obtained by the method according to the invention will have a non-uniform distribution of joining recesses according to a predetermined design (pattern). Another advantage of the present invention is the fact that the mating recesses are arranged with a suitable density only where they are needed, possibly leaving some areas free of backing plates, whereby energy savings, less tool wear and reduced manufacturing costs are achieved. comes from

The
According to an embodiment of the invention, the cross-section of the
According to the invention, the engaging
According to the invention, the cross-section of the engaging
Preferably, according to the invention, all engagement recesses 19 provided in the
According to the invention, the engaging
Also according to the invention, the side wall of the
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, at least one of the engagement recesses 19 has a lower base in the

The mating recesses 19 of the embodiment of FIG. 10C differ from FIG. 10A in that they have a slot-shaped cross-section. According to the present invention, the slot-shaped mating recesses 19 may be oriented such that at least two of them are non-parallel to each other. In this way advantageously it will be possible to place the slots in a sunburst pattern, such as in the
Referring to Fig. 10D, an embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in which the engagement recesses 19 are distributed according to a fourth predetermined design (pattern). Referring to Fig. 10E, an embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in which the engagement recesses 19 are distributed according to a fifth predetermined design (pattern). The design shown is a
11A-11D , an embodiment in which the
