Abstract
본 발명은 탄소나노튜브의 길이 측정 방법에 대한 것으로, 본 발명에 따르면 다양한 방법으로 합성된 다발 형태의 탄소나노튜브에서 개별 탄소나노튜브를 손상 없이 분리해 낸 후 길이를 정확하게 측정할 수 있다.
Description
본 발명은 탄소나노튜브의 길이 측정 방법에 관한 것으로, 더욱 구체적으로는 다양한 방법으로 합성된 탄소나노튜브의 길이를 정량적으로 평가할 수 있도록 하는 기술에 대한 것이다.
탄소동소체의 한 종류인 탄소나노튜브(Carbon Nanotube, CNT)는 직경이 수 내지 수십 nm이며, 길이가 수백 um에서 수 mm인 물질로 우수한 열적, 전기적, 물리적 성질과 높은 종횡비 때문에 다양한 분야에서 연구가 진행되고 있다. 탄소나노튜브의 고유한 특성은 탄소의 sp2 결합에 기인하며, 철보다 강하고 알루미늄보다 가벼우며, 금속에 준하는 전기 전도성을 나타낸다.
최근까지는 분말 형태의 탄소나노튜브를 분산시켜 복합재료의 강화제로 사용하거나 분산용액을 이용한 투명전도성 필름을 제조하는 방향으로 많은 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 하지만 복합재료와 투명전도성 필름에 탄소나노튜브를 이용하기 위해서는 탄소나노튜브의 분산이 중요한데 탄소나노튜브의 강한 반데르발스힘(van der Waals force)에 의한 응집력 때문에 이들을 고농도로 분산시키고 분산성을 유지하는 것은 쉽지 않은 일이다. 또한 탄소나노튜브가 강화재로 사용된 복합재료의 경우에는 탄소나노튜브의 우수한 성질을 충분히 발현하기가 힘들다는 단점이 있다.
한편 탄소나노튜브를 합성하기 위한 다양한 방법이 제시된 바 있으며, 합성된 탄소나노튜브는 일정 길이와 직경을 갖는 원통형의 구조를 가지게 된다.
하지만 종래에는 합성된 탄소나노튜브의 길이, 개체수, 형상 등의 특성들을 정량적으로 평가할 만한 방법이 없었다. 특히 탄소나노튜브가 고분자 복합소재나, 이차전지의 첨가제로 사용되는 경우 일정 길이의 탄소나노튜브를 필요로 하는데, 이를 위해서는 합성된 탄소나노튜브의 길이를 정량적으로 측정할 수 있어야 한다.
즉 이차전지의 첨가제로 사용되기 위해서는 분산된 탄소나노튜브가 필요한데, 탄소나노튜브의 길이가 길면 구조적 측면에서는 우수한 전도성을 보이겠지만 분산이 어렵고, 탄소나노튜브의 길이가 짧으면 분산성은 좋지만 구조적으로 불리하게 작용할 가능성이 크다. 이를 위해 탄소나노튜브의 정확한 길이를 규명해야 할 필요가 있는 것이다.
한편 탄소나노튜브의 특성을 평가하는 종래기술로는 일본공개특허 제2015-230210호(2015.12.21. '평가 방법, 성장 방법, 평가 장치 및 성장 장치') 등이 있다.
본 발명은 상술한 바와 같은 종래 기술의 문제점을 해결하기 위해 안출된 것으로, 다양한 방법으로 합성된 탄소나노튜브의 길이를 정량적으로 측정할 수 있도록 하는 기술을 제공하는 데 그 목적이 있다.
상기 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명에 따른 탄소나노튜브의 길이 측정 방법은, 탄소나노튜브를 분산시키는 (a)단계; 상기 (a)단계에서 분산된 탄소나노튜브를 원심분리하는 (b)단계; 및 상기 (b)단계에서 원심분리된 탄소나노튜브에서 샘플을 채취하여 길이를 측정하는 (c)단계;를 포함한다.
여기서, 상기 (a)단계는, 용매에 탄소나노튜브와 분산제를 혼합하는 (a-1)단계; 및 상기 (a-1)단계에서 혼합된 분산액에 초음파를 가하여 균질화된 분산액을 수득하는 (a-2)단계;를 포함할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 분산제는 음이온 계면 활성제, 양이온 계면 활성제, 양쪽성 계면 활성제, 비이온 계면 활성제, 고분자형 분산제 중 하나 이상을 포함할 수 있다.
또, 상기 (b)단계는, 상기 (a-2)단계에서 수득한 균질화된 분산액에 용매를 추가하여 희석액을 수득하는 (b-1)단계; 및 상기 (b-1)단계에서 수득한 희석액을 원심분리하는 (b-2)단계;를 포함할 수 있다.
또, 상기 (c)단계는, 상기 (b-2)단계를 통해 원심분리된 희석액에서 상층액만 추출하는 (c-1)단계; 및 상기 (c-1)단계에서 추출된 상층액을 입도분석기를 통해 분석하여 상기 상층액에 포함된 탄소나노튜브의 길이를 측정하는 (c-2)단계;를 포함할 수 있다.
또 상기 방법으로 길이가 측정된 탄소나노튜브는 2차전지용 양극/음극 도전재, 도료, 안료, 또는 컴파운딩용 첨가제로 사용될 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 탄소나노튜브 길이 측정 방법에 의하면 다양한 방법으로 합성된 탄소나노튜브의 길이를 최대한 정확하게 측정할 수 있다.
즉, 용매에 탄소나노튜브와 분산제를 혼합하여 초음파를 통해 약분산을 수행함으로써 탄소나노튜브가 끊어지는 현상을 최대한 방지하여 다발 형태의 탄소나노튜브 뭉치에서 개별 탄소나노튜브들을 분리해낼 수 있다.
또한 분산 이후 용매를 추가하여 희석한 후 원심분리 과정을 거침으로써 분산이 잘 이루어지지 않은 뭉치 형태의 탄소나노튜브는 희석액의 바닥으로 침전시키고, 탄소나노튜브의 분리가 잘 이루어진 상층액만을 추출하여 길이를 측정하기 때문에, 가장 정확도가 높은 대표 샘플에 대한 분석을 통해 측정 결과에 대한 신뢰도를 높여줄 수가 있다.

이하에서는 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 설명하되, 발명의 요지와 무관한 일부 구성은 생략 또는 압축할 것이나, 생략된 구성이라고 하여 반드시 본 발명에서 필요가 없는 구성은 아니며, 본 발명이 속하는 기술 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자에 의해 결합되어 사용될 수 있다.
도1은 촉매를 이용하여 합성된 다발형 다층벽 탄소나노튜브의 전자현미경 이미지이다. 도1에 도시된 바와 같이, 합성을 마친 탄소나노튜브는 방향성을 가지고 다발로 뭉쳐 있기 때문에, 개별 탄소나노튜브의 길이를 측정하는 것이 불가능하다. 따라서 길이 측정을 위해서는 뭉쳐 있는 탄소나노튜브 다발에서 손상 없이 일부의 탄소나노튜브를 분리시켜야만 한다.
도2는 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 탄소나노튜브의 길이 측정 방법을 설명하기 위한 흐름도이다. 즉 도1에 도시된 탄소나노튜브 다발에서 일부의 탄소나노튜브를 분리시켜 길이를 측정하는 과정에 대한 것이다.
길이 측정을 위해서는 다발 형태로 뭉쳐 있는 탄소나노튜브를 분산<S205>시켜야 한다. 이때 탄소나노튜브를 강분산 시키면 끊어짐이 발생하여 탄소나노튜브의 길이를 올바르게 측정할 수 없게 된다. 따라서 다음과 같은 약분산 방식을 적용해야 한다.
분산을 위해 먼저 용매에 탄소나노튜브와 분산제를 넣어 혼합한다. 용매로는 DIW(deionized water, 탈이온수), N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N,N-Dimethylformamide, N,N-Dimethylacetamide, Dimethyl sulfoxide, ethanol, methanol, pentyl alcohol, acetone, Methyl ethyl ketone, Cyclopentanone, ethyl acetate, ethylene glycol, Diethylene glycol, 1-Propanol, isopropanol, 1-Butanol, isobutanol, octanol, Ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, Diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, Triethylene glycol monoethyl ether, Tetraethylene glycol monoethyl ether 중 하나 이상이 사용될 수 있다.
또한 분산제로는 음이온성 계면 활성제, 양이온성 계면 활성제, 양쪽성 계면 활성제, 비이온 계면 활성제, 고분자형 분산제가 사용될 수 있다.
음이온성 계면 활성제로는 예컨대 Sodium deoxycholate, Sodium dodecyl sulfate, Sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, Ammonium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, sodium laureth ether sulfate 등이 있다.
양이온성 계면 활성제로는 Cetrimonium bromide, Cetrimonium chloride, Benzethonium chloride, Benzalkonium chloride, Dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide, Dimethyldioctadecylammonium chloride, Dimethyldioctadecylammonium propane, Thonzonium bromide 예컨대 등이 있다.
양쪽성 계면 활성제로는 예컨대 Sodium lauroamphoacetate, Lecithin, Hydroxysultaine, Cocamidopropyl betaine 등이 있다.
비이온 계면 활성제로는 예컨대 Triton X-100, Tween 80, Sorbitan, Sorbitan monolaurate, Sorbitan monostearate, Polyethoxylated tallow amine, Polyglycerol polyricinoleate, Octyl glucoside 등이 있다.
고분자형 분산제로는 예컨대 Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone, polyvinylidene fluoride, polyvinyl butyral , Carboxymethyl cellulose, Hydroxypropylmethyl Cellulose, Methyl Cellulose, styrene butylene rubber 등이 있다.
한편 탄소나노튜브와 분산제는 1:0.01 내지 1:100의 중량비로 혼합된다. 예컨대 용매로써 DIW 79.72g과, CNT 0.08g과, PVP 희석액 0.2g을 혼합하여 분산액을 준비한다. 이때 PVP 희석액은 분산제인 PVP(Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone) 0.04g에 DIW 0.16g을 혼합한 것이다.
탄소나노튜브와 분산제의 혼합 중량비 범위가 넓은 이유는 분산제의 종류마다 탄소나노튜브를 분산시킬 수 있는 능력이 다르고, 또한 동일한 분산제라 하더라도 탄소나노튜브의 물성(길이, 결정성 등)에 따라서도 분산정도가 달라지기 때문이다. 예컨대 어떠한 분산제는 1g만으로도 10g의 탄소나노튜브를 분산시킬 수 있지만, 다른 분산제 1g으로는 탄소나노튜브 1g도 분산시키기 힘든 경우가 있다.
본 발명의 목적은 탄소나노튜브를 최적으로 분산시키기 위한 분산제의 종류와 혼합비율을 찾고자 하는 것이 아니다. 따라서 다양한 종류의 분산제가 존재하고 있고, 다양한 방식으로 합성된 탄소나노튜브의 물성도 다르기 때문에 탄소나노튜브와 분산제의 중량비를 1:0.01 내지 1:100의 넓은 범위로 지정한 것이다. 물론 바람직하게는 PVP 분산제를 사용할 시, 탄소나노튜브와 PVP 분산제는 1:0.3 내지 1:1의 중량비로 혼합될 수 있다.
이후 준비된 분산액(용매, CNT, 분산제의 혼합물)에 외력을 가하여 균질화된 분산액을 얻게된다. 예컨대 초음파, 볼밀, 비드밀, 3롤 밀, 바스켓 밀 또는 고압 균질기를 이용하여 외력을 가함으로써 균질화된 분산액을 얻을 수 있다. 본 실시예에서는 소정시간(예컨대 1시간)동안 초음파를 가하여 탄소나노튜브를 분산시키고 균질화된 분산액을 수득하였다.
초음파를 통해 균질화된 분산액이 얻어지면 원심분리를 위해 균질화된 분산액에 용매를 추가하여 희석시킨다. 여기서 균질화된 분산액과 추가되는 용매의 중량비는 1:1 내지 1:100인 것이 바람직하다. 본 실시예에서는 CNT 수용액 2g에 DIW 38g를 첨가하여 희석액을 수득하였다.
균질화된 분산액과 추가되는 용매의 중량비 역시, 용매의 종류에 따라 분산 정도가 달라지기 때문에 넓은 범위의 혼합비율을 기재한 것이며, 바람직하게는 추가되는 용매로 DIW(탈이온수)를 사용할 경우, 균질화된 분산액과 추가되는 용매는 1:5 내지 1:20의 중량비로 혼합될 수 있다.
균질화된 분산액에 용매를 추가하여 희석시키는 이유는 다발 형태의 탄소나노튜브에서 풀어진 탄소나노튜브 가닥들을 다발 뭉치에서 최대한 분리시키기 위함이다.
이후 희석액을 원심분리<S210>한다. 본 실시예에서는 희석액을 15,000rpm으로 30분동안 원심분리 시켰다. 원심분리를 마치면 희석액에서 상층액만 추출하여 이에 포함된 탄소나노튜브 길이를 측정<S215>한다.
앞서 용매에 탄소나노튜브와 분산제를 넣어 혼합한 분산액에 초음파를 가하여 분산을 실시함에 따라, 다발 형태의 탄소나노튜브에서 개별 탄소나노튜브 가닥들이 상당량 떨어져 분리된다. 하지만 분리되지 않은 탄소나노튜브들이 여전히 다발 형태로 뭉쳐있게 되는데, 여기에 용매를 추가한 후 원심분리 과정을 거치면, 다발로 뭉쳐 있는 탄소나노튜브 다발들은 바닥으로 침전되고, 다발에서 분리된 탄소나노튜브 가닥들은 희석액의 상층부로 떠오르게 된다. 따라서 원심분리된 희석액에서 상층액만 추출할 경우 최대한 분리가 잘 이루어진 탄소나노튜브들만 수득할 수 있게 된다.
원심분리된 희석액에서 추출한 상층액에 포함된 탄소나노튜브의 길이는 입도분석기(PSA, particle size analyzer)를 통해 측정할 수 있다. 본 실시예에서는 광학적 특성을 통해 입자의 길이를 측정하는 레이저 회절(Laser Diffraction) 입도분석기가 사용되었다.
입자에 레이저를 조사하면 회절, 굴절, 반사, 흡수, 산란 등의 광학적 특성이 나타나는데, 이중 레이저를 입자에 조사하였을 시 입자의 표면을 지나갈 때 발생하는 회절 현상을 이용한 것이 레이저 회절 입도분석기이다. 즉 입자의 크기가 클수록 회절 각도는 작아지고, 입자의 크기가 작을수록 회절 각도는 커지게 되는데, 이러한 회절광을 검출하여 입자의 사이즈를 분석하는 것이다.
레이절 회절 분석 방법을 사용하는 이유는 nm에서 mm까지 넓은 범위를 측정하는 것이 가능하고, 측정 속도가 빠르며, 샘플을 순환시켜 반복 측정함으로써 정확도가 높기 때문이다.
본 실시예에서는 상층액 샘플을 3번 반복 측정하였으며, 그 분석 결과의 예시가 도3에 도시되어 있다.
도3을 참조하면 상층액 샘플을 3번 반복 측정한 입자 크기의 누적분포곡선이 하나의 그래프에 표시되어 있는 것을 확인할 수 있으며, 각 곡선의 피크점 평균값을 해당 샘플의 탄소나노튜브 길이로 결정하게 된다.
한편 이상에서 설명한 방법으로 길이가 측정된 탄소나노튜브는 2차전지용 양극/음극 도전재, 도료, 안료, 또는 컴파운딩용 첨가제로 사용될 수 있다.
이상에서 상세히 설명한 바와 같이 본 발명에 따른 탄소나노튜브 길이 측정 방법에 의하면 다양한 방법으로 합성된 탄소나노튜브의 길이를 최대한 정확하게 측정할 수 있다.
즉, 용매에 탄소나노튜브와 분산제를 혼합하여 초음파를 통해 약분산을 수행함으로써 탄소나노튜브가 끊어지는 현상을 최대한 방지하여 다발 형태의 탄소나노튜브 뭉치에서 개별 탄소나노튜브들을 분리해낼 수 있다.

즉, 종래에는 밀도에 따라 물질을 분리하여 특정 목적물을 제조하기 위해 원심분리를 하였고, 분산된 용액의 분산 안정성이나 분산성을 확인하기 위해 입도 분석기를 사용하였을 뿐이다. 따라서 탄소나노튜브의 길이 측정을 위해 탄소나노튜브의 분산액을 원심분리하고 상층액 시료만 채취한 후 입도분석기를 통해 탄소나노튜브의 길이를 규명하고자 하는 시도는 본 발명에서 최초로 다루고 있는 바이다.
상기한 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예는 예시의 목적을 위해 개시된 것이고, 본 발명에 대해 통상의 지식을 가진 당업자라면, 본 발명의 사상과 범위 안에서 다양한 수정, 변경 및 부가가 가능할 것이며, 이러한 수정, 변경 및 부가는 본 발명의 특허청구 범위에 속하는 것으로 보아야 할 것이다.
