최근 국내외적으로 관상어가 지닌 가치가 주목을 받으면서 관상어 산업에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 관상어 산업은 단순히 1차 산업 분야인 관상어의 종묘생산 및 양성과 더불어 2차 산업인 관상어 용품, 그리고 3차 산업인 사육 및 관리, 교육, 전시서비스 등까지 포함하는 복합 산업이다. 국내외적으로 여가활동과 취미생활이 다양해지면서 관상어 산업은 산업·생태교육· 문화적 측면에서 지속적인 성장세를 보이고 있다. 특히 세계 최대 관상어 대국인 중국에서는 아로와나, 고배금룡, 홍룡 같은 관상어를 ‘용’이라 칭하여 고가에 거래된다. ‘용’은 국내에서도 관련 동호회나 카페만 수백 개일 정도로 인기가 좋다. 하지만 아로와나는 물 밖으로 튀어 오르는 습성이 있어 관상어가 어항천장에 머리를 박고 두부에 손상을 입어 사망하거나 어항 밖으로 튀어나오는 경우가 발생하는 사례가 많다. 특히 물고기가 어항 밖으로 튀어나와서 죽는 것은 ‘점프 사’라는 이름이 생길 정도로 빈번하게 발생한다.
