Abstract

PURPOSE: An e-learning system applicable regardless of the various platforms in a ubiquitous environment is provided to enable a learner to dynamically interact with content, thereby enabling the learner to receive content transparently and consistently regardless of the external environment. CONSTITUTION: A learning managing unit manages attendance, a result, and a learning process list of a learner by using a dotLRN learning management system(LMS). The learning managing unit integrally manages the total learning processes of the learner by supporting a collaboration function with the learner. If the learner requests education content through a ubiquitous terminal, the holding capacity and user information of the terminal transmits to the LMS. A rich media server uses information of the learner terminal to transmit the generated media content to a learner after generating proper media content.

Description

The e-learning system applicable to various platforms in Ubiquitous environment}

The present invention through the system development (1) of learning for the ubiquitous environment, the learning manager uses the dotLRN learning management system (LMS) (2) to manage the learner's attendance, grades, and learning process list. The LMS system integrates and manages the learner's overall process by supporting the development of learning content, collaboration with learners such as chat and discussion rooms.

When a learner requests educational content from a ubiquitous terminal and various communication terminals, the capacity of the terminal and the user's information are sent to the LMS. The Media Server uses the information of the learner terminal to generate media content suitable for the learner terminal and transmits the media content to the learner (5).

The development platform is designed to be applied to the existing online learning field regardless of the learner's learning environment, and is a system that can learn regardless of the learner's external environment (terminal, network). In other words, this study aims to design a framework suitable for M-learning environment by conducting researches on standardized content design, terminal characteristics and user's preference and expression method, and adaptive content generation tool.

1. Development of wired and wireless integrated learning model

Basically, terminal and network characteristics in wired and wireless environments are different. In this project, we developed a model to support learning in a wired / wireless integrated environment. In a wired environment, a web page for checking all contents is provided. In a wireless environment, a web page for checking (video function and simple announcement) is provided.

2. LMS system with video function

The system presented in this project has the ability to stream not only text and images but also animation and video data. This allows the user to watch lecture videos, an important form of learning on the go.

3. Transparent and adaptable streaming service

By determining the size and resolution of video data according to the characteristics of the terminal and the network, the user has the function to receive transparent and optimized video.

4. Development of E-learning application model

Real-time lectures and video conferencing were used by Macromedia's "Flash Communication Server." In particular, there is a more efficient function using the algorithm developed in No. 3, and it will be helpful to develop various business models by extending these application models in the future.

The present invention is a next generation online learning system that can provide customized learning services without time and space constraints by utilizing PDA, tablet PC, and handheld device in a place where wireless Internet is evolved in e-learning. E-learning is becoming increasingly important due to the following two factors. First, due to the development of mobile communication and hardware technology, various terminals and wired and wireless networks have emerged. Second, standardization work on running designs that can operate on various platforms is actively underway. Therefore, it is essential to develop a system that can dynamically generate multimedia contents according to the characteristics of a terminal while standardizing in designing an e-learning system. In particular, because ubiquitous terminals have different resolutions and CPU functions from different manufacturers, it is inefficient to produce various educational contents manually in terms of time and cost. Therefore, this study intends to develop a system that can dynamically adapt the content to provide accessibility for learners to receive the content transparently and consistently regardless of the external environment (terminal, network).

After analyzing the learning system, in order to proactively respond to the ubiquitous environment, the original development direction is set as shown in Table 1.

Wired and wireless integrated environment

We present a model suitable for the ubiquitous learning environment. It provides a transparent interface to the user and allows video streaming to be adaptive and fast.

Open software base

Based on open software such as dotLRN and Postgre DB, you can increase your price competitiveness.

Multimedia running strategy

It is based on Flash, which is installed on many computers to provide image and video content as well as traditional text.

The present invention largely has two effective parts.

1) Technical aspect

-By securing LMS design technology, it can be used for various application development in the future.

-By developing multimedia contents, it can be used in various fields such as education through video conferencing and real time communication.

-Presenting M-Learning application model laid the foundation for future application development.

2) economic and industrial aspects

-It is expected to actively enter overseas business by building M-Learning solution.

-By preoccupying the content market based on e-learning solutions at the beginning, it will contribute to the development of the company.

-It is effective to increase the competitiveness of the terminal through the diversification of contents.

The system structure of ubiquitous learning proposed in the present invention is as follows. The learning manager uses the dotLRN Learning Management System (LMS) to manage the student's attendance, grades, and course listings. In addition, the overall process of learners is integrated and managed by supporting the development of learning contents, collaboration with learners such as chat and discussion rooms.

When the learner requests educational content from the ubiquitous terminal, the terminal's capacity and the user's information are sent to the LMS. Rich Media Server uses the information of the learner terminal to generate the appropriate media content and transmit it to the learner.

The developed details of the present invention are as follows.

 -LMS design (3)

Basically, the system is configured based on open software. The dotLRN system is the infrastructure that plays a pivotal role in the LMS and is provided through AOL server, which is a web server. We also used PostgreSQL, an open database engine. The user can access the LMS using a web browser, and can customize and configure various applications (calender, lecture, file sharing, bulletin board, ...).

-Development of content adaptation technology considering capacity of terminal (4)

Ubiquitous learning should take into consideration the characteristics of the terminal owned by the user. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate and research a service that provides a mechanism for explaining a terminal's capacity and user's preference. In this task, we developed a module to manage the characteristics of the terminal based on the analysis of the HTTP header. The user can access the system using the same address regardless of the type of the terminal and receive different contents according to the characteristics of the terminal.

In addition, in order to transmit adaptive video data, the present invention uses a flash installed in most computers. Flash can embed video data as well as text and images. The user determines the available network bandwidth through the "Flash communication server" and requests streaming video data of appropriate size and quality.

-Analysis and application system development of media server (5)

It analyzes media servers that provide functions such as real-time lectures, video conferencing, and chat rooms and uses them to develop application systems. For this purpose, the actual education system was implemented based on the framework built in this project using Macromedia's "Flash Communication Server". The figure below shows a system where an instructor and learner can communicate in real time by building an image system.
