신용카드류의 전자카드는 휴대하기 편리하며 결제기능, 현금인출, 현금이체 등의 각종 금융서비스를 제공하므로 널리 사용되고 있으나 분식이나 도난 시 타인의 불법 사용을 막기 곤란하다는 단점이 있다. 타인의 불법사용을 막기 위해, 많은 고안이 이루어졌다. 특허(10-0049657-0000 )를 보면, 카드에 다수의 초박형 스위치를 구비하여 스위치를 이용하여 암호를 누르면 내부의 마이크로컨트롤러가 암호를 인식하여 카드를 활성화 시키는 방법으로 보안을 구현하고 있다. 그러나 이 방법은 카드의 공간의 대부분을 스위치가 차지하므로, 외관상 미려하지 않고, 카드의 여러가지 광고문안이나 안내, 각종 미학적인 디자인요소를 형성하기 힘들다는 단점이 있다.
