Abstract

A system and a method for providing a multimedia contents service are provided to offer various formats of multimedia contents by adjusting resolution of the multimedia contents according to specification and a codec of a user terminal, and transcoding the multimedia contents. A user terminal(1001-100N) transmits specification/codec information of hardware to a server(102) and receives multimedia contents from a server. The server adjusts the resolution of the multimedia contents according to the specification/codec information of the user terminal, transcodes the multimedia contents, and provides the transcoded multimedia contents to the user terminal. The specification information includes at least one of CPU and memory specification information, and display device information of the user terminal. The server includes middleware for extracting the specification/codec information from the user terminal and transmitting the extracted information to the server, and downloads/installs the middleware to the user terminal.
