Description
The present invention relates to compositions and methods using compositions such as adhesives comprising a copolymer of butene-1. The composition of the present invention is useful for temporarily adhering a substrate.
Hot melt adhesives are widely used in a variety of applications. Typically, hot melt adhesives are designed to bond two substrate surfaces together and to remain bonded so that the two surfaces cannot be separated without damaging or breaking the substrate. For example, if the substrate is a paperboard, the permanence of the bonding force may be formed by using a general hot melt adhesive, so that one or both of the substrates may be damaged or destroyed in an attempt to separate the substrate. Although adhesive bonds are strong in certain applications, such adhesives have one drawback in that, rather than permanent after time, it is desirable that the substrate be separated without damaging one or both of the substrates. In addition, although not all areas, in some cases where the hotmelt is easily visible due to its color or when the stickiness of the hotmelt remains, the hotmelt remaining on the substrate is aesthetically undesirable. On the other hand, although hot melt adhesion is partly known to have desirable aesthetic properties, the initial adhesion required for use for many applications is lacking.
Therefore, there is a need in the art for adhesive compositions to allow for the adhesion of two substrates during elapsed time, and subsequently to lose adhesion, thereby allowing the two substrates to be easily separated without aesthetic damage to the substrate surface.
The present invention relates to compositions and methods using the compositions, which compositions are initially adhesive and then non-adhesive. In a first embodiment, the composition comprises a copolymer of butene-1 and has a hot melt adhesive. The composition may comprise about 10% to about 80% by weight of butene-1 copolymer, about 5% to about 60% by weight wax, and about 5% to about 70% by weight of adhesive resin. In a first embodiment, the composition exhibits adhesion within about 0.5 seconds to about 30 seconds, and non-adhesion within about 11 minutes to about 24 hours. The composition of the present invention may be a non-pressure sensitive adhesive.
In an alternative embodiment, the invention is a method of temporarily securing the containers together. The method comprises providing a hot melt adhesive composition of the present invention. And adding the composition to the first substrate. The second substrate is applied with the composition on the first substrate to form an adhesive force between the first substrate and the second substrate. The composition initially exhibits adhesion, and then forms an adhesion that exhibits non-adhesion that allows the substrate to separate without fiber peeling.

As can be realized, the invention can be modified in various and obvious respects without departing from the technical gist and summary of the invention. The described embodiment is preferred, but may be combined with other features without departing from the technical gist of the invention. Accordingly, the described descriptions and examples are to be regarded as illustrative in nature and not as restrictive. FIG. 1 is a perspective view, and FIG. 2 is a top view container fixed with the composition of the present invention showing the direction of string attachment and pulling for the separation resistivity test and the modified separation resistivity test used herein.
The methods and compositions of the present invention describe hotmelt adhesives that initially exhibit adhesion and subsequently exhibit non-adhesion. In particular, the adhesives of the present invention undergo only one and unexpected sequence of changes in the form of the following attributes: Typically, the adhesive as initially applied has little adhesive strength (eg, initially fails the separation resistance test). With regard to the "fixed time", the adhesive force is formed (pass the separation resistivity test in 10 seconds). The adhesion then maintains its integrity over time (e.g., passes the segregation resistance test for elapsed time after 10 seconds). The adhesive then loses its adhesion (eg no fiber peeling). It is sometimes convenient for the adhesive to be non-tacky at this point.
As such, such adhesives are useful in a variety of applications. Including palletized and other temporary short adhesion applications, such as temporary bonded boxes, adhesion between substrates is useful initially, and later substrates (eg boxes) are unsightly fibers It can be easily separated without peeling.
I. Compositions: The compositions of the present invention have a desirable and unique combination of "adhesive" and "non-adhesive" attributes as described and defined by the tests below. Such compositions include a composition consisting of a copolymer of butene-1, a wax, and an adhesive resin, as described in more detail below. The composition exhibits initial adhesion followed by non-adhesion.
A. Copolymer of Butene- 1: For example, the copolymer of butene-1 may be included in the range of about 10% to about 80% by weight of the composition. Alternatively, the concentration is in the range of about 20% to about 70% by weight of the composition. More alternatively, the concentration is in the range of about 30% to about 45% by weight of the composition.
Preferred copolymers of butene-1 are copolymers of butene-1 and a member selected from the group consisting of methylene, ethylene, propylene and mixtures thereof. In a first aspect of the invention, the concentration of butene-1 in the copolymer is in the range of about 90% to about 99% by weight of the copolymer. Alternatively, the concentration of butene-1 is in the range of about 92% to about 98% by weight of the copolymer. More alternatively, the concentration is in the range of about 94% to about 97% by weight.
According to a first embodiment, the concentration of methylene, ethylene, and / or propylene in the copolymer is in the range of about 1% to about 10% by weight of the copolymer. Alternatively, the concentration is in the range of about 3% to about 9% by weight of the copolymer. More alternatively, the concentration is in the range of about 4% to about 8% by weight of the copolymer.
One particularly useful point is that copolymers of butene-1 and ethylene can be purchased, for example, from Basell under the trade name PB-1 ™. PB-1 ™ is obtained by the polymerization of butene-1 with a stereo-specific Ziegler-Natta catalyst to produce linear, polymeric, isotropic, semi-crystalline polymers.
B. Wax : The term “wax” is recognized in the art and may include some viscosity, fixed velocity, or fluidity modifiers. The wax may be, but is not limited to, paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, synthetic wax (preferably high melting point) or such functional class. The concentration of the wax in the synthesis of the present invention is in the range of about 5% to about 60% by weight. Alternatively, the concentration is in the range of about 10% to about 40% by weight. Various waxes can be purchased, for example, from Exxon Mobil, Chemical, Carummet, and Baker Petrolite.
When used with other components of the present invention, it can be seen that the wax provides and / or contributes numerous benefits. For example, the wax aims to reduce the viscosity of the composition and make the composition easier to apply to the substrate. In addition, the wax provides a faster rate of fixation on the composition. Importantly, the addition of wax results in combination with the copolymer of butene-1, leading to subsequent crystallization of the composition, whereby a desirable result can be obtained in which subsequent adhesion is lost.
C. Adhesive resin: The composition also includes an adhesive resin. The term "adhesive resin" is recognized in the art and may include such materials that provide adhesion and specific adhesion to a composition, whereby the composition firmly determines the member to be bonded while determining and reducing the viscosity of the composition. And makes the composition easier to apply to the substrate. As known in the art, the tacky resin may be, but is not limited to, rosin, rosin inducing agents, terpenes, modified terpene resins, hydrocarbons, or modified hydrocarbon resins. The concentration of the adhesive resin in the composition of the present invention is in the range of about 5% by weight to about 70% by weight. Alternatively, the concentration is in the range of about 10% to about 60% by weight. More alternatively, the concentration is in the range of about 25% to about 55% by weight. Various adhesive resins can be purchased from, for example, Arizona Chemical, Exxon Mobil Chemical, and Eastman Chemical.
D. Optional Ingredients: According to an alternative embodiment, the compositions of the present invention may comprise an antioxidant. The term "antioxidant" is recognized in the art and may include materials that interfere with self-oxidation treatment. According to the first embodiment, the antioxidant stabilizes the adhesive formulation of the invention against degradation. Antioxidants may be, but are not limited to, IRGANOX 565 ™, IRGANOX 1010 ™, IRGANOX 1076 ™, which are resistant to phenolic antioxidants and are available from Ciba Geigy. The concentration of antioxidant in the composition of the present invention may be in the range of about 0.1% to about 1% by weight.
In an alternative aspect of the invention, the composition may also include one or more additional polymers, including but not limited to homopolymers of butene-1. When formulated with additional polymers, the butene-1 copolymer can contain sufficient total polymer content to maintain the desired property performance. For example, it may comprise at least 50% by weight of the total polymer content (copolymers of butene-1, copolymers of butene-1 with added polymers such as EVA and the like). Preferably, when the second polymer is used in the formulation, the copolymer of butene-1 may comprise 70%, 75%, 80%, or even 90% by weight of the total polymer content.
The present invention may also include a desired colorant / pigment / dye in the adhesive to match the color of the substrate for aesthetic purposes.

II. Method of Making a Composition: In a first aspect of the invention, the composition is made in the following manner. In addition to the various polymers involved, the components of the composition are mixed (eg, until smooth and uniform) at a known temperature to mix the components of the hot melt adhesive to form a mixture. Alternatively, the components melt in a temperature range of about 150 ° C to about 175 ° C. According to the first embodiment, the components are melted in a forced-hot air oven. The mixing temperature can be maintained using a heating mantle, for example, as produced by Terre Haute, Glas-Col in Indiana, or by known methods or devices.

The polymer component can be added to an upright or lightening mixer such as STIRRER TYPE RZRI ™ manufactured by Caframo in Wiarton, Ontario, Canada. Alternatively, the polymer or polymers can be added by known methods or devices.
In a first aspect of the invention, some antioxidant components are added as initial components. Alternatively, the antioxidant included when the polymer or polymers are added is added during the time of preparing the composition.
In a more particular method of making the composition of the present invention, the hopper is filled with components and measured with a twin screw extruder. The material is then extruded with the material under high shear stress through the system for minimal heat exposure and for a short period of time and cut into pellets in that location.
Ⅲ. III. Articles, Uses & Adhesive Adhesion Properties: In terms of use, the compositions of the present invention can be applied to a substrate for temporary adhesion with another substrate. For example, the composition is particularly useful for adhering temporarily with two or more containers. As used herein, the term "container" includes, but is not limited to, paperboard cardboard boxes, bottles, corrugated boxes, bags (paper and plastic), and the like. As such, "substrate" means some surface that is bonded until otherwise indicated.
One particularly useful application is that it includes temporarily bonded paperboard cardboard boxes such as those commonly used for delivering consumer goods to the general public, for example to grocery stores. Cardboard boxes are often preferred, such cardboard boxes being temporarily glued together, for example filled with an article and / or sealed in an automatic line. As desired, the composition has sufficient initial adhesive strength to hold the carton together during processing, but later loses adhesion, so that the carton can be easily removed, for example, from the point of sale. As such, the compositions of the present invention can be used to hold two or more containers together while delivering to a final point of sale, such as a grocery store. Alternatively, the at least one substrate may be, for example, a coupon, tag, or other substrate other than the container needed to temporarily adhere to the package, and may later be removed without damaging the container or coupon / tag. .
The composition may be in a known hot melt adhesive applicator, and may be extruded through a nozzle on the applicator or applied to a rolling mill and moved to a first substrate to create a first adhesive surface. Alternatively, the composition can be applied in a known manner to ultimately adhere the first substrate to the second substrate through the composition of the present invention.
The elapsed time required for adhesion to form is referred to as "fixed time". After matching the two substrates, the composition initially has adhesion such that adhesion is formed between the two substrates. Adhesive force is formed within an elapsed time range of, for example, about 0.5 seconds to about 30 seconds after application. This is the "set time" for the adhesive and can be easily determined by the test method below. Alternatively, the adhesive force is formed within an elapsed time range of about 1 second (even less) to 20 seconds, or 5 seconds to 10 seconds. As provided by the composition of the present invention, having a sufficiently fast settling time is particularly important for high speed automatic applications. The composition requires sufficient adhesion strength to sustain the intended end use, such as two bonded packages. As such, the separation resistivity test described below is used to test the adhesive strength. After elapse of time, the composition begins to lose adhesion, whereby the adhesion between the two substrates becomes weak at the point where the two substrates can be easily separated without peeling off the fibers. Fiber Peel Test Set Even when the substrate is free of fiber peel (eg, plastic bottles), it will be understood that the fiber peel test set up hereafter is a useful test method to confirm the loss of adhesion of the adhesion of the present invention. After adding the composition, the composition loses adhesion (without FT) in the elapsed time range within about 11 minutes to about 24 hours. Alternatively, after adding the composition, the composition loses adhesion in the elapsed time range within about 40 minutes to about 8 hours, within about 20 minutes to about 18 hours, or even within 1 hour to about 4 hours. This loss of adhesion can be tested using coupon testing at various time intervals such that the adhesive exhibits the aesthetic effect of the substrate upon separation. The result of the coupon test, when there is no fiber peeling, is when the composition loses adhesiveness. For the sake of clarity, an adhesive demonstrating no fiber peeling at 8 hours after application means that the composition loses adhesion at 8 hours, about 8 hours (i.e., fiber peeling can occur at 2 hours). has exist). However, if the same adhesive has fiber peeling at 4 hours, the composition loses adhesion after 4 hours and at about 8 hours.
According to the first embodiment, the composition loses adhesion and then becomes non-tacky. As used herein, the term "non-depressive" refers to a composition that is non-sticky after losing adhesion. As defined herein, the non-pressure sensitive adhesive may have a Loop Tack value of less than about 5 ounces per inch after the adhesive loses adhesion, as defined in the coupon test above. Alternatively, the composition may remain viscous without loss while such properties are finally added.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, after or after its loss of adhesion, the composition takes a brittle, crystallized shape. In this shape, the composition may appear in white form and / or have about 1 or about 2 Gardner colors. Regardless of the color of the bonded substrate, such white shapes generally have little or no negative aesthetic effect, whereby it may be desirable for the multicolor of the substrate to be adhered by the same adhesive. Alternatively, the composition may be other colors, and may be colors to match the substrate color.
Ⅳ. Ⅳ. Test Method : The composition of the present invention presents a unique fixation of physical properties over time as described above. Test methods for these physical properties at various times are described herein.
A. Fiber Peeling (" FT ") : Fiber peeling measures the amount of fiber attached to an adhesive when two substrates bonded together through an adhesive are separated. In particular, the adhesive left on one of the two substrates is evaluated for the fibers from the second of the two substrates.
The FT percentage is the percentage of visual evaluation of the surface area of the fibers that make up the total surface area of the adhesive. For the purposes of the present invention, in preferred embodiments, some amounts of FT visually are not aesthetically desirable. Systems with such visually noticeable FTs can be reported as qualitative "fiber peeling", and those that do not have such visually noticeable FT (about 0%) are qualitatively "no fiber peeling". Can be reported as.
FT is then measured here by a "coupon test". Seven millimeter diameter dots of adhesive are attached onto the substrate using MINI-SQUIRT ™ at 350 ° F. (and ambient atmosphere). A test opening time of 1 second (before matching with the second substrate) and a compression time (fixing time) of 2 seconds are allowed. At this point, the resulting adhesive force is then dropped by hand at various time intervals within 1 second to 24 hours, so that the substrate is evaluated for FT. When doing this test, three samples are tested at each time interval, and subjective and non-quantitative determination of "peel-off" or "no-peel" is made by the test apparatus. For the sake of clarity, the original test device in the art is that two of the three samples are "no peeling" and the third sample may have a very small amount of "peeling off," but the reasonable Time intervals can be reported by having "no peeling" within the fraction. It is preferable to have FT at least one minute to determine that the adhesive force persists at least to this one minute mark. Since it is desirable for the adhesive of the present invention to have sufficient adhesion to cause FT at about 1 minute, the test coupon can be said to be "failed" if the adhesive does not have or loses adhesion to the 1 minute mark. As a sign of loss of adhesion over time, it is preferred that there is no FT after about 11 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or even 2 hours or more from the point of application of the adhesive. If the adhesion is lost after 1 minute and before about 11 minutes, it is also referred to as "failed" by premature dissolution. Thus, although one of the inherent arts in the art can recognize adhesives / substrates having “no fiber peeling” at 30 minutes, “fiber peeling” at 5 minutes means “no fiber peeling” at 10 minutes. Notwithstanding that this may be the case, the coupon test results can be reported by listing the time intervals in which the adhesive gives "no peeling". If more accurate is desired, the test apparatus may be tested in 10 minutes. However, since one of the original techniques in the art may be recognized as many tests, and subjective to the test, data points at close time intervals will not be useful. The coupon test results reported here use portions of paperboard cut from COCA COLA® CLASSIC COKE FRIDGE PACK.
The final adhesive surface is preferably substantially different from the COCA COLA® CLASSIC COKE FRIDGE PACK paperboard, the coupon test can be altered, and the substrate (s) can be bonded substitutes (thus the substrates are likewise two Other substrates). This may be referred to herein as a "modified coupon test." The modified coupon test may be useful for high speed testing, for example, to aid in discrimination when more specifically bonded particular substrates can be separated without peeling the fibers for a particular adhesive. As such, modified coupon testing can be particularly useful for quickly identifying the best product for a particular application.
B. Separation Resistance: Separation resistance is a measure of the adhesiveness regarding the amount of force required to separate two paperboard boxes that match each other using the adhesive of the present invention. 1 and 2 help set up this test. The test uses two paperboard FRIDGE PACKs used to package COCA COLA® CLASSIC COKE products with a length of 15.5 inches, a width of 5.25 inches, a diameter of 5.25 inches, and a total weight of 4500 g. For the purposes of the test, six dots of the
It is desirable to finally bond a package having a weight that is substantially less than 4,500 g, and the modified separation resistance test can be used by not requiring fabrication as adhesive strength so that the adhesive functions for its intended purpose. In the modified test, the COCA COLA® CLASSIC COKE FRIDGE PACKS is filled with only 300 g, and the separation resistance test is repeated otherwise, as described above. The same applies to the definitions of "pass" and "fail".
Alternatively, a representative sample of the intended actual, full, rectangular paperboard package, which is temporarily bonded together in a customized separation resistivity test, may be used in the separation resistivity test described above, so that not only the weight but also the substrate surface is accurately "actual society". (real world) ". One of the original techniques in the art will easily recognize how to fit a test to measure the test to match the package size. For example, the string may be attached to the smallest end of the package if the package has sides of varying surface area. The package side with the largest surface area can be at the connection of the bench top. The adhesive is applied to the surface of the first package that coincides with the surface of the second package as described above.
C. Settling Time: The settling time of the adhesive of the present invention can be measured using a separation resistance test. Once the package is matched, the test is performed at 10 second intervals (or more precisely less), and the first time point at which the separation resistance test passes is equal to the set time for the adhesive. If more accurate is desired, a modified separation resistance test can be used.
D. Loop Adhesion: Loop adhesion measures tack. More specifically, loop adhesion is a measure of adhesion to steel surfaces and is measured using a loop adhesion tester available from Chemstrustruments at Fairfield, OH. First, the tested adhesive is coated onto mylars cut into 1 1/8 inch by 5 inch strips. Each strip is formed by a loop of adhesive on the outer surface of the loop, where the loop is connected to the steel plate in the test apparatus. The test apparatus measures the force required to remove the loop from the steel plate in ounces per inch. For the purposes of the present invention, after the adhesive fulfills the intended purpose of temporarily bonding the two substrates together, the adhesive is a coupon test, with the intention to determine whether the adhesive is sticking or whether it is a non-pressure sensitive adhesive. After loss of adhesion according to (e.g., 1 minute after the coupon test indicated no fiber peeling), the loop adhesion was measured.
E. Gardner Color: Gardner color is a measure of color. Sample adhesives are compared to the Gardner color standard, as described in ASTM D-1544. Color is identified by selecting a color standard from the 18 Gardner color standards that closely match the sample color.
