이와 같은 3전극 면방전 형의 PDP는 ADS(Address Display Separate Period)라는 구동 방식을 사용하여 구동되는 것이 일반적이다. 1 shows a general structure of a conventional AC plasma display panel. The plasma display panel (hereinafter referred to as 'PDP') having such a structure is referred to as a three-electrode surface discharge type plasma display panel. Such a three-electrode surface discharge type PDP is generally driven using a driving method called ADS (Address Display Separate Period).
The discharge cell of the prior art has a structure in which two sustain electrodes (holding electrode X and scan electrode Y) disposed on the front plate and an address electrode disposed on the back plate cross each other, as shown in FIG. . Referring to the operation principle of the panel, when the cell selected by the image data is to be turned on, wall charges are accumulated between the scan electrode and the address electrode of the selected cell in the address section to accumulate wall charges. The discharge for the display is generated by alternately applying the sustain pulses so that the polarities alternate between the sustain electrodes and the scan electrodes.
2 illustrates a driving waveform of an ADS driving method generally used to drive the AC plasma display panel according to the related art. In the ADS driving system, one TV field is usually divided into eight subfields, and each subfield is divided into an address period and a sustain discharge period. Among these, the address section is divided into a reset section of step 1 (STEP 1), step 2 (STEP 2), and step 3 (STEP 3) and an address section of step 4 (Step 4).
In the reset period, all the erase and write pulses are alternately applied to the sustain electrode X and the scan electrode Y to form a constant wall charge in all the cells, thereby making the discharge cells on the front surface of the panel uniform and preparing for the operation of the address period. In this case, the pulse applied to the reset period is not a method of using a smooth rising pulse or a ramp pulse or applying a reset pulse every one subframe, if necessary. Various methods, such as a method of applying an initialization pulse every 10 subframes, may be used.
In the address section, a necessary charge is generated by sequential scan pulses applied to the address electrode pulse and the Y electrode to form a wall charge to prepare for a subsequent sustain discharge section.
At present, the demand for the possibility of increasing the size of the plasma display panel and the possibility of implementing high resolution image quality is gradually increasing. Therefore, many studies are being conducted to improve the brightness and the discharge efficiency. In order to improve the discharge efficiency, attempts have been made to achieve high efficiency by widening the gap between the scan electrode and the sustain electrode. It has been reported that by increasing the electrode spacing between the scan electrode and the sustain electrode, the electric field between the two electrodes can be reduced, thereby increasing the excitation efficiency of electrons to further increase the efficiency. As a result, no solution has been proposed for the problem of deterioration of driving conditions such as an increase in the sustain voltage. In addition, the increase in the holding voltage raises the price of the device used for driving, causing a problem of raising the panel manufacturing cost.
The present invention has been made to solve such a problem, and to provide a structure of a new plasma display panel using an auxiliary electrode and a method of driving the same in order to increase brightness and efficiency and to reduce a sustain voltage.
In addition, the present invention proposes a panel having a structure in which an auxiliary electrode is inserted between the scan electrode and the sustain electrode in parallel with each other, and has a pulse shape and a frequency independent of a pulse applied to the scan electrode and a pulse applied to the sustain electrode. By applying an auxiliary pulse having a voltage magnitude and a duty ratio to the auxiliary electrode, a new driving method is used to reduce the sustain voltage and improve luminance and efficiency by using wall charges accumulated in the auxiliary electrode.

According to another aspect of the present invention, a method of driving a plasma display panel includes a plurality of sustain electrodes (X), an upper substrate having a plurality of scan electrodes (Y) formed in pairs with the sustain electrodes, and the sustain electrodes. And a lower substrate having a plurality of address electrodes intersecting the electrodes and the scan electrode, wherein a unit discharge cell is formed around each of the points where the sustain electrode and the scan electrode and the address electrode cross each other. A method of driving a plasma display panel including a plurality of auxiliary electrodes respectively inserted between each of the sustain electrodes and the scan electrodes paired therewith, in order to ensure that the discharge cells are in a uniform initial state, Reset driving for applying a reset pulse between the plurality of scan electrodes and the plurality of sustain electrodes System; Pulses are sequentially applied to the plurality of scan electrodes to select the discharge cells to be turned on among the discharge cells according to the image data, and the pulses according to the image data are applied to the plurality of address electrodes. An address driving step of applying a polarity opposite to a pulse applied to the pulse; And applying a sustain pulse alternately so that the polarity between the sustain electrode and the scan electrode is alternate, and having a positive voltage lower than that of the sustain pulse, separately from the sustain pulse, the width of the sustain pulse. Rather than applying an auxiliary pulse having a narrow pulse width.
The voltage of the sustain pulse is lower than the sustain pulse voltage when the auxiliary pulse is not applied while the interval between the sustain electrode and the scan electrode is the same.
Hereinafter, with reference to the accompanying drawings will be described in detail a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
3 illustrates a structure of a plasma display panel in which an auxiliary electrode of the present invention is inserted. Unlike the structure described in the prior art of FIG. 1 described above, the present invention proposes an electrode structure in which an auxiliary electrode is inserted between the sustain electrode X and the scan electrode Y of the front plate. As the auxiliary electrode is inserted, the electrode gap between the sustain electrode and the scan electrode is increased to induce long gap discharge to increase efficiency. However, at this time, as the distance between the sustain electrode and the scan electrode increases, the operating voltage further increases, and it has been observed by the present inventors that the operating voltage can be lowered by applying an auxiliary pulse to the auxiliary electrode. In order to produce a long gap discharge, the preferable electrode space | interval is the range of 100 micrometers or more and 1000 micrometers. It is preferable to use transparent conductive films, such as ITO, for an auxiliary electrode.
4 illustrates a waveform used in the driving method of the present invention. During the
5 and 6 are experimental results of reducing the driving voltage according to the present invention, and show the maximum discharge sustain voltage and the minimum discharge sustain voltage, respectively. When the distance between the scan electrode and the sustain electrode is increased, the drive sustain voltage required for the discharge between the two electrodes is increased. In the present invention, the drive sustain voltage is lowered as shown in FIGS. 5 and 6 by applying the driving method of FIG. 4. It was. At this time, the driving sustain voltage is lowered and then increased again according to the voltage level of the pulse applied to the auxiliary electrode. The voltage range of the auxiliary electrode capable of lowering the driving sustain voltage should be set and driven. In the illustrated experimental results, the auxiliary electrode pulse voltage that can minimize the discharge sustain voltage was obtained around 80 V, but this result depends on the manufacturing conditions of the panel (gap between the sustain electrode and the scan electrode, the size of the discharge cell, etc.). Can lose.
7 is an example of experimental results showing that luminance can be improved by applying the present invention. When the driving waveform shown in FIG. 4 is applied to the plasma display panel structure proposed by the present invention as shown in FIG. 3, as shown in FIG. 7, an improved result can be obtained as compared with the luminance obtained by the prior art. It was observed that the degree of brightness enhancement varies with the voltage change of the auxiliary pulse applied to the auxiliary electrode. When the voltage of the pulse applied to the auxiliary electrode becomes too high, it was observed that the luminance improvement effect is reduced. In the illustrated experimental results, it was shown that the luminance improvement effect is high when the pulse size applied to the auxiliary electrode is 50 V or less, but this result may vary depending on the specific specifications of the panel or the panel manufacturing conditions.
8 is an illustration of experimental results of improved efficiency by applying the present invention. When the driving waveform shown in FIG. 4 is applied to the plasma display structure proposed by the present invention as shown in FIG. 3, as shown in FIG. 8, an improved result can be obtained compared to the efficiency obtained by the prior art. It was observed that the degree of improvement in efficiency was changed by changing the voltage magnitude of the auxiliary pulse applied to the auxiliary electrode. When the voltage of the pulse applied to the auxiliary electrode became too high, the effect of improving efficiency decreased. In the illustrated experimental results, the efficiency improvement effect is high when the pulse size applied to the auxiliary electrode is 50 V or less, but this result may vary depending on the specific specifications of the panel or the panel manufacturing conditions.
The present invention is not limited to the above embodiment, and various modifications are possible within the scope of the technical idea. For example, the shape and arrangement of the sustain electrode, the scan electrode, and the address electrode may vary in a meander shape, and thus, the pattern of the auxiliary electrode may also vary. In addition, various well-known pulses may be used in the reset period and the address period shown in FIG. 4. In addition, the frequency, duty ratio, shape, and the like of the auxiliary pulse may be variously modified unlike the shape of FIG. 4.
As described above, in the detailed description of the present invention, specific embodiments have been described, but it should be taken as exemplary, and various modifications may be made without departing from the technical spirit of the present invention. By applying the present invention, the brightness of the plasma display panel can be improved, the discharge efficiency can be increased, and the driving sustain voltage can be lowered.
In particular, in the case of a high efficiency plasma display panel using a long gap discharge, when using the structure of the prior art as it is, the operating voltage for sustain discharge increases with the distance between the sustain electrode and the scan electrode, but when applying the present invention The sustain discharge voltage can be lowered by the effect of the auxiliary pulses applied to the auxiliary electrodes, which can greatly contribute to an increase in manufacturing cost and discharge efficiency.
