모자의 챙은 심재와 겉감으로 이루어지는데 심재는 통상 PVC나 PE, PP와 같은 합성수지를 소재로하여 성형된다. 또한 사이즈테이프는 모자의 하단둘레내부에 봉착되며 심재의 역할 뿐만 아니라 모자의 크기를 정해준다. 사이즈테이프 또한 모자챙의 심재와 같은 소재로 제조되나 두께는 횔씬 얇다. 기존 소재의 모자챙 심재는 적지 않은 무게를 가질 뿐만 아니라 제조시 미싱바늘이 통과하기 어렵고 미싱바늘과의 마찰열이 발생하여 겉감 밖으로 소재가 녹아 노출되는 문제점이 있다. 또한 합성수지 소재의 사이즈테이프는 인장강도가 약하여 봉착할 때 길이의 신축이 발생하므로 모자의 크기가 일정하지 못하며 두께가 얇아 작업성이 낮다. 인장강도와 작업성을 향상시키기 위하여 그 두께를 증가시키면 모자의 유연성이 낮아지고 무게가 증가되는 문제점이 나타난다. 합성수지의 모자챙 심재나 사이즈테이프는 표면이 매끄럽고 겉감인 직물지와 물성이 다르므로 겉감과의 밀착성이 없어 봉제작업이 매우까다롭고, 완성품의 경우도 겉감과 심재가 밀착되지 않고 서로 유동되므로 상품성이 낮아진다.The brim of the hat consists of a core material and an outer material.
