Abstract

PURPOSE: A mechanical oil seal for crankshaft is provided to prevent the excessive wear of lip part due to the deficiency of oil during the early stage of engine start, by feeding the oil remaining in the seal part to the lip part. CONSTITUTION: A mechanical oil seal(3) comprises a square C-shaped rubber seal body(4); a lip part(5) formed integrally with the rubber seal body; a spring(6) for pressing the lip part to the surface of a crankshaft; and a reinforcing iron core(7) for maintaining shape of the rubber seal body and increasing strength. The lip part of the mechanical oil seal has a first helix convex-concave(8) and a second helix convex-concave(9) formed all over the circumference of both boundary surfaces of the lip part. The oil remaining in an oil area(10) is pumped toward a leading edge contact surface(12) of the lip part along the second convex-concave during the early stage of engine start, to thereby prevent wear of the lip part. The oil passed through the lip part and leaked to an air area(11) is guided toward the leading edge contact surface along the first convex-concave when the engine is warmed up, to thereby prevent oil leakage.
