종래에는 시멘트 성형물이나 주물로 된 그릴형태의 보호대를 나무밑둥의 지반위에 깔아 사용하였는바, 이는 단지 나무밑둥을 보호하는 기능만 가지고 있을 뿐 미적기능과 계시기능 그리고 교통안전표지 기능은 부여되지 않아 그 기능이 극히 제한적인 문제가 있었고 한편, 상기 보호대들은 한번 설치하면 파손될때까지 사용하여야 했고 일부분이 파손되어도 전체를 교체시켜야 했으며 도로확장등으로 가로수를 옮겨심을 경우는 보호대를 파괴시켜야 함에 따라 재사용이 불가능한 비경제적인 문제점이 있었다.In the past, a grill-shaped protector made of cement molding or casting was used on the ground of the tree trunk, which only had the function of protecting the tree trunk, but did not provide aesthetic function, timekeeping function and traffic safety sign.
