종래에는 고흡수 폴리머를 여성용 생리대나 아기 기저귀의 용도로 사용되고 있으나 이러한 제품들은 펄프 솜에 고흡수 폴리머를 혼합하여 적층시킨 관계로 부피가 큰 결점이 있다. 또한 고흡수 폴리머는 열을 가하였을 때 서로 용융 결합되지 않는 등 다른 합성수지와는 달리 가공처리가 쉽지 않다. 종래의 기술로서 고흡수 폴리머를 열가소성 수지와 혼합하여 성형했을 경우 고흡수 폴리머를 코팅하는 현상으로 수분을 흡수할 수 없게 되는 등의 결점이 있고 PVC 접착테이프나 수지의 표면에 접착제를 바르고 그 위에 고흡수 폴리머를 고착시키는 방법은 바탕자재의 합성수지 특성상 흡수력이 없고 신축성과 촉감이 좋지 않다. 또한 팽윤시 수지에 접착된 것은 제하고는 팽윤된 고흡수 폴리머가 접착면으로 부터 이탈되게 된다.Conventionally, the superabsorbent polymer is used as a feminine sanitary napkin or a baby diaper.
