In addition, a first step of entering a plurality of incident light into a single mode; A second step of selecting a light having a wavelength selected from the plurality of light incident in the first step by transmitting or reflecting a specific wavelength by changing the area of the Bragg grating reflected wave at a high speed by an electro-optic effect; A high speed variable wavelength selection method is provided, comprising a third step of performing tuning of the wavelength of the Bragg reflection wave as a whole using the thermo-optical effect of the polymer.
In the following, with reference to the accompanying drawings, a preferred embodiment according to the present invention will be described in detail.
1 is a cross-sectional plan view of a fast variable wavelength selective filter according to an embodiment of the present invention, wherein the fast variable wavelength selective filter includes an optical waveguide 103, four Bragg gratings 104, and four Bragg gratings, respectively. Electrode 105, and simultaneous tuning 106 of all four wavelengths using the thermo-optic effect of the polymer.
The working principle is as follows.
When light having four wavelengths (e.g., λ 1 = 1550.0 nm, λ 2 = 1550.8 nm, λ 3 = 1551.6 nm, λ 4 = 1552.4 nm) is incident on the fast variable wavelength selective filter, the incident light is A single mode is entered into the interior of the filter along the optical waveguide 103 and is reflected by all four Bragg gratings 104, each having a different period, but with a third grating (λ 3 = 1551.6 nm). When a voltage is applied to the electrode of, light having a wavelength of λ 3 is transmitted and selected, and the other light except for the selected light is reflected. At this time, only the light 107 having a desired wavelength is passed according to the voltage applied to each of the Bragg grating electrodes 105.
(102)Undesired light is also reflected in the Bragg grating and emitted to the outside along the optical waveguide 103.
On the other hand, the wavelength tuning 106 performs a function of tuning the entire wavelength of about 5 ~ 10 nm wavelength range, due to the thermo-optic effect of the polymer. For example, when using a group of four wavelengths (e.g. λ 1 = 1540.0 nm, λ 2 = 1540.8 nm, λ 3 = 1541.6 nm, λ 4 = 1542.4 nm), use a temperature constant device up to 100 o C. The Bragg grating reflected wavelengths then shift to the four wavelength groups mentioned above to operate.
2 is a schematic diagram showing the internal structure of the fast variable wavelength selective filter according to an embodiment of the present invention in detail, wherein the lower cladding layer 201, the core layer 202, the upper cladding layer 203, and the polymer optical waveguide layer are shown. 204, Bragg Grating 205 with period Λ 1 , Bragg Grating 206 with period Λ 2 , Bragg Grating 207 with period Λ 3 , and Bragg Grating 208 with period Λ 4 , have.
In Bragg gratings with different periods, the Bragg reflected wave λ B is calculated by Equation 1 below.
Where Λ g is the period of Bragg grating, m is the grating order (usually 1 or 2) and n eff is the effective refractive index.
The Bragg reflection wave change due to the electro-optic effect is linearly proportional to the applied electric field, and is given by Equation 2 below.
Here r is an electro-optic coefficient, which means r 33 , and ΔE is the amount of change in the applied electric field.
As an example, Bragg reflection wave assuming Λ g = 500 nm, m = 1, r 33 = 25 pm / V, n eff = 1.65, total thickness (thickness of lower and upper cladding layer and core layer) is 6 μm. The change of is Δλ B = −0.01ΔV [nm]. Is the amount of change in the applied electric field.
Meanwhile, in the above-described embodiment, four Bragg gratings are installed. However, the Bragg grating may be installed as many as necessary.
The fabrication method of the fast variable wavelength selective filter described above is as follows.
First, the manufacturing technique of Bragg grating requires a large refractive index (Δn ?? 0.01) in Bragg grating in order to narrow and refine the line width of the reflected Bragg wavelength while reducing the Bragg grating length. To this end, by performing photobleaching and sequential polling of an electro-optic polymer using a phase mask or an interference phenomenon of two beams, single and multi-grating having large refractive index differences can be formed. The refractive index difference [Delta] n used in Bragg grating currently used is varying from about 10 -4 .
However, in the case of performing photobleaching and sequential polling of the electro-optic polymer, the non-linear chromophore in the electro-optic polymer is destroyed by oxidation due to the photobleaching and loses its polarity, so that the refractive index does not change when polling due to strong DC voltage. However, unbleached areas exhibit large changes in refractive index due to rotation or arrangement of the nonlinear chromophors for polling.
For example, in the case of PMMA-DANS electro-optic polymer, the difference in refractive index between polling without photobleaching and polluting with photobleaching was about 0.05.
On the other hand, in order to manufacture the Bragg grating electrode, it can be solved by adopting a composite electrode structure of Coplanar Pad and Microstrip Line in each grating.
The amount of change due to the thermo-optic effect of the polymer is Δλ B = −0.1ΔT [nm], where T is the temperature. A temperature constant device (TEC) is attached to take advantage of the large thermo-optic effect of these polymers to tune the entire Bragg wavelength.
As described in detail above, the present invention enables a high-density wavelength division multiplexing method to manufacture and supply a high-speed variable wavelength selective filter, which has been difficult to implement among ultra-fast optical signal processing elements for building a terabit-class high-speed and high-capacity information communication network. There is an effect to enable the implementation of the optical communication based.
In addition, the Bragg grating forming technique using the electro-optic polymer accompanying the present invention can be used for optical information storage element technology using optical refraction or the like.
The technical spirit of the present invention has been described above with reference to the accompanying drawings, but this is by way of example only and not by way of limitation to the present invention. In addition, it is obvious that any person skilled in the art may make various modifications and imitations without departing from the scope of the technical idea of the present invention.
