Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for reducing current consumption in a wireless communication device, and more particularly, to an apparatus and method for reducing current consumed in a wireless part of a wireless communication device.
Typically, wireless communication devices used for mobile communication include a mobile phone and a portable personal digital assistant (PDA). Through such a wireless communication device, a user performs voice communication and data communication. Therefore, the user is to carry the wireless communication device, so to supply power using a separate battery or rechargeable battery. Therefore, users are demanding miniaturization of a rechargeable battery or a battery for the convenience of carrying the wireless communication device, and also wants to use the wireless communication device for a long time with the miniaturization. There are two ways to use the wireless communication device for a long time. First, there is a method of providing a rechargeable battery or a battery that can be used for a long time, and second, a method of reducing current consumption in the wireless communication device.
In the present invention, since the second method is described, the configuration of the wireless unit of the wireless communication device will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The controller 111 controls the overall operation of the wireless communication device. The duplexer 101 outputs the transmitted data to the antenna ANT and outputs the received data to the receiver 110. Looking at the reception process, the receiver 110 removes the carrier signal from the received signal, filters and extracts electrical data. In addition, the receiver 110 measures a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and outputs it to the controller 111. In the transmission process, a voltage control amplifier (VCP) 108 amplifies electrical data under the control of the controller 111 and outputs only an intermediate frequency through the intermediate frequency first bandpass filter 107. The intermediate frequency is synthesized with the signal received from oscillator 109 in synthesizer 106. The synthesized signal is filtered by the second bandpass filter 105 and again amplifies the filtered signal with the amplification set through the drive amplifier 104. The amplified signal is again filtered through a third bandpass filter, and the filtered signal is amplified by a power amplifier 102 and output through the duplexer 101. The wireless communication device transmits a signal through the above-described process.
However, when transmitting a signal of voice and data in the wireless communication device, it is possible to perform a call without amplifying through the power amplifier 102. In other words, even when amplified by the driving amplifier 104 alone, transmission and reception of signals are often performed at all. Nevertheless, the mobile terminals amplify and transmit signals to be transmitted using the power amplifier 102 in all cases regardless of the strength of the received electric field strength. As a result, the portable terminal consumes unnecessary current and has a problem of shortening the use time of the portable terminal.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus and method for reducing power consumption during signal transmission in a wireless communication device.
The present invention for achieving the above object provides an apparatus for reducing the current consumption in the signal transmission unit of the wireless communication device. The portable terminal transmitter according to the configuration is as follows. 2 is a block diagram of a wireless unit of a wireless communication device according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. In the configuration of FIG. 2, the same parts as those of FIG. 1 described above will be omitted. The control unit 111 controls the overall operation of the wireless communication device, and in particular, performs a control to reduce the power consumption according to the present invention. The output end of the second bandpass filter is connected to the pole end of the first switch SW1. Normally open of the first switch SW1 is connected to an input terminal of the power amplifier 102, and an output terminal of the power amplifier 102 is connected to a non-contact point of the second switch SW2. In addition, an A contact of the first switch SW1 is normally connected to an A contact of the second switch SW2. The pole end of the second switch SW2 is connected to the duplexer 101. The control terminals of the first switch SW1 and the second switch SW2 are connected to the control unit 111 to control the switching operation. This will be described below. In communication with the first switch SW1 and the second switch SW2, a pole of each switch is connected to an A contact. In the following description, a path through which a pole of each switch is connected to an A contact and a signal is transmitted is referred to as a “first path”. When the signal is transmitted through the first path, the power amplifier 102 is turned off so that the power amplifier 102 is turned off so that the power amplifier 102 is turned off. At this time, the received electric field strength received from the receiving unit 110 to the control unit 111 is inspected, and when the electric field strength is less than the set electric field strength, the poles of the first switch SW1 and the second switch SW2 are controlled to be connected to the non-contact point of each switch. Then, the power amplifier 102 is driven and the signal transmitted through the power amplifier 102 is amplified and output to the duplexer 101. In the following description, a path through which the first switch SW1 and the second switch SW2 are connected to an A contact and a signal is transmitted is referred to as a “second path”. When a signal is transmitted through the second path, the power amplifier 102 is turned on by applying power to a bias terminal to which the power of the power amplifier 102 is applied.
3 is a control flowchart of communication in a wireless communication device according to an embodiment of the present invention. Hereinafter, a transmission process during communication for reducing power consumption of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. 2 to 3. The controller 111 connects the first switch SW1 and the second switch SW2 to the first path in step 200 in the call mode. The power amplifier 102 is in an off state. In step 202, the controller 111 checks the received field strength (RSSI) received from the receiver 110. In step 204, the controller 111 checks whether the received received electric field strength is greater than or equal to a first criterion. The controller 111 proceeds to step 202 if the test result is greater than or equal to the first criterion, and proceeds to step 206 if the test result is less than the first criterion. The control unit 111 checks whether it is less than or equal to the second reference signal in step 206. The control unit 111 proceeds to step 210 if the test result is less than or equal to the second reference signal, and proceeds to step 208 if it is greater than the second reference signal. When the controller 111 proceeds from step 206 to step 208, the controller 111 controls the first switch SW1 and the second switch SW2 to set a path of a signal to be transmitted as a second path. In operation 202, the power amplifier 102 is turned on by applying power to a bias stage for applying power to the power amplifier 102. In contrast, when the controller 111 proceeds from step 206 to step 210, the controller 111 controls the first switch SW1 and the second switch SW2 to set a path of a signal to be transmitted as the second path. Then, the power amplifier 102 is turned on by applying power to a bias stage for applying power to the power amplifier 102. The controller 111 proceeds to step 212 to control the voltage control amplifier 108 to increase the amplification degree. When the above-described information in a table may be shown as shown in Table 1 below.
Referring to the contents shown in Table 1 above, the first criterion is set to a value of the lowest received electric field strength at which the transmitted signal can communicate without amplifying the power amplifier 102. The second reference signal is set to a value of the lowest received electric field strength that can be communicated through only the power amplifier 102 without being amplified by the voltage control amplifier 108. Then, the wireless communication device transmits a signal without using the power amplifier 102 when the received electric field strength is higher than the first criterion. When the signal received from the receiver 110 is smaller than the first reference and larger than the second reference, the signal may be transmitted without increasing the amplification degree of the voltage control amplifier. That is, the current consumption during transmission is reduced by transmitting the signal in several stages according to the received electric field strength.
As described above, there is an advantage that the current consumption of the wireless communication device can be reduced by dividing the operation of the amplifier into several stages according to the received electric field strength.
