Description
BACKGROUND This application relates generally to radio frequency (RF) devices, systems and methods.
Phased array transmit/receive systems are examples of RF systems required for many applications such as broadcast, radar, space communications, weather observation, optics, radio frequency (RF) identification systems, and tactile feedback systems. Such systems can also be used for gesture detection, communication backhauling and high-speed routing in wireless gigabit (WiGig) or other consumer wireless systems.
A phased array system includes an array of antennas in which the relative phases and amplitudes of a plurality of signals transmitted via or received via the antenna can be adjusted. Such adjustments may be performed before or after analog-to-digital or digital-to-analog conversion, etc., in various parts of the system and apparatus, such as, for example, an RF part, an intermediate frequency (IF) part, or a baseband (BB) part. With proper adjustment, the effective radiation pattern of this arrangement can be formed in any desired manner, also referred to as beamforming. Beamforming of this radiation pattern occurs due to constructive and/or destructive interference between signals transmitted by each antenna in the array of antennas. Since the phase and amplitude relationships are adjustable, so-called beamsteering can be performed, ie the radiation pattern can be modified during transmission. Reception can be done in a similar manner, thus providing a reception sensitive to a particular radiation pattern, for example radiation from a particular direction.
One type of phased arrangement is a dynamic phased arrangement. In a dynamic phased arrangement, each signal path providing a signal to the antenna includes an adjustable phase shifter, which together can be used to move a beam of radiation, for example. Furthermore, the signal path may include a tunable amplifier, which provides additional tunability. Such adjustable phase shifters and/or amplifiers may exhibit variations in operation due to, for example, processing variations or temperature variations. This may affect the accuracy of the generated or received radiation pattern and/or may affect the accuracy of the beam steering. In general, for accurate beam steering, an accurate phase relationship between various signal paths is required.
A procedure for generating a signal to be transmitted, processing a received signal, or calibrating a signal path may be performed using a local oscillator ( LO) signal. Generating such a local oscillator signal often involves using a phase-locked loop (PLL).
Because the phase relationship is important in such a phased arrangement, such a PLL must provide a signal with the required stable phase. An object of the present invention is to provide a radio frequency device.

Hereinafter, various embodiments will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. It should be noted that these examples are provided by way of example only and are not meant to be limiting. For example, although embodiments have been described as including multiple features or components, in other embodiments some of these features or components may be omitted and/or replaced with alternative features or components. have. In addition, exemplary features or components conventionally used in a phased array system may be provided separately from the features or components explicitly shown in the drawings or described herein.

In some of the embodiments, an integrated circuit used in a phased array device, such as a phased array system, may include a phase locked loop. A phase locked loop may be used to generate the phase oscillator signal in some implementations. In an embodiment, an automatic gain control (AGC) circuit is provided to keep the amplitude of the reference signal provided to the phase locked loop constant. In some embodiments, this may improve the phase stability of the output signal of the PLL, since changes in the amplitude of the reference signal may affect the phase of the output signal of the PLL.

The
The automatic

As a non-limiting exemplary environment, FIGS. 2 and 3 show a phased array system. In FIGS. 2 and 3, in order to avoid repetition, corresponding or similar components are denoted by the same reference numerals, and repeated descriptions are not provided. Furthermore, a component that appears multiple times in the system is indicated by appending a letter (A, B, ...) to the same number, and the whole is indicated only by a number (eg, the number 21 is the
In the phased array system of FIG. 2 , for transmission, a transmit/receive (TRX) analog-to-digital (AD)/digital-to-analog (DA)
When the analog transmission signal is distributed from the TRX AD/
Note that one or more circuits 21 may be integrated into one chip, but may also be provided as separate chips. Often, in enlarged phased arrays with hundreds of antennas, multiple phased array chips are used, each serving as a subset (ie, more than one) of antennas.
In order to receive the signal, the signal received via the antenna 27 is adjusted in amplitude and phase, and possibly down-converted from the RF reception frequency to an intermediate frequency. This adjusted signal is integrated and provided to the TRX AD/
Furthermore, each of the phased array circuits 21 in the example of FIG. 2 includes built-in testing equipment (BITE) for measuring and correcting the phase difference between the different phased array circuits 21 . To this end, the phased array circuit 21 includes a first test signal injector 23 , a second test signal injector 26 , phase detectors 24 , 25 and a local oscillator 22 . The local oscillator 22 generates a local oscillator signal based on the signal Ref supplied to all of the local oscillator circuits 22 . Since the path lengths are different from each other, the phase difference Δφ can generate a signal Fref that is provided to the local oscillator circuit 22 . The components described above may be controlled by digital interference (not explicitly shown in FIG. 2 ) to control the local oscillator signal generation, signal injection and readout of the phase/amplitude detectors 24 , 25 . In general, in order to measure the relative phase, a test signal is generated by
The local oscillator signal generated by the local oscillator circuit 22 can serve as a reference for the phase detectors 24 and 25 for these measurements. Furthermore, the local oscillator signal generated by the local oscillator circuit 22 may be used in the circuit of FIG. 2 for other purposes, such as upconversion/downconversion, for example. Each of the phased array circuits 21 may include a phase locked loop circuit to generate a PLL circuit, the signal Fref serving as a reference signal of the PLL. In order to prevent a phase shift of the local oscillator signal due to changes in the amplitude of Fref, the circuit illustrated in FIG. 1 sets the amplitude of the signal Fref to the desired value before providing the signal Fref to the PLL circuit as described with reference to FIG. It can be used while performing automatic gain control that adjusts to a constant value.
In the system of Figure 2, local oscillator circuit 22 can be used to generate the local oscillator signal, both for test reference purposes and for other possible purposes in phased array circuit 21, such as frequency upconversion/downconversion. In another embodiment, a separate phase locked loop is used. A corresponding system is shown in FIG. 3 . In order to avoid repetition, components corresponding to components already described with reference to FIG. 2 are given the same reference numerals and will not be described in detail again.
In the system of Fig. 3, the frequency required as an intermediate frequency for upconversion/downconversion is different from the frequency used for testing purposes. This is the case, for example, in some 5th generation (5G) mobile phone/network systems that distribute signals at an intermediate frequency of about 3 to 6 GHz instead of 28 GHz of the 4th generation (4G) mobile phone/network system. In this case, the local oscillator circuit 22 is used only as a reference for testing purposes. For upconversion/downconversion, an additional PLL circuit 32 is provided to the phased array circuit 31 , and an additional PLL is provided to the TRX AD/
6a to 6c show further examples of phase error with a plurality of PLLs used in an AD/DA circuit or a phased array circuit, for example for upconversion/downconversion. 6A-6C, a
It is noted that in other embodiments, only some of the PLLs of the systems of Figures 2, 3 or 6A-6C may be provided with automatic gain control.
4 is a diagram illustrating in more detail a PLL circuit that can be used in an RF device such as the phased array system of FIGS. 2 and 3 according to an embodiment. The PLL circuit of FIG. 4 receives the reference frequency signal Fref from the automatic
In the example of FIG. 7 , the reference signal PLLrefin for the PLL (eg, Fref in FIG. 4 ) is provided to a
Referring to FIG. 4 , the output signal of the automatic
Furthermore, providing automatic gain control to the reference signal can be applied to both analog PLLs and digital PLLs, but is not limited thereto.
5 is a flowchart illustrating a method according to an embodiment. The method of FIG. 5 may be implemented, for example, in the apparatus and system described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 4 , but is not limited thereto. Furthermore, although the method of FIG. 5 has been illustrated and described as a series of actions or events, the order in which these actions or events are illustrated and described is not meant to be limiting.
At 50 of FIG. 5 , the present invention includes providing a reference signal. At 51, the present invention performs automatic gain control on the reference signal to provide a gain controlled signal having a predetermined amplitude and/or a stable amplitude. By 'stable amplitude' is meant here that the amplitude is essentially stable for a long period of time, eg between calibrations of the system in which the method is carried out, at least for a period according to the requirements of the embodiment. Note that, depending on the application, the absolute value of the amplitude does not have to be an exact value, as long as the amplitude is sufficiently stable to prevent shifts and changes after the system has been calibrated. At 52 , the method includes providing the gain controlled signal as a reference signal to the phase locked loop circuit. At 53, the output signal of the phase locked loop is then used in a radio frequency (RF) circuit, such as in a phased array circuit or device, for testing purposes, such as phase correction, or for frequency conversion purposes in a mixer.
The details and modifications thereof described with respect to the apparatus and system of FIGS. 1 to 4 may also be applied to the method of FIG. 5 .
