Plastics are used in a variety of applications, from industrial materials to disposables and packaging materials because of their light, strong, easy to process, and non-decomposable properties.
However, in recent years, as interest in environmental problems has increased, the problem of disposal of non-degradable waste plastics has emerged as a challenge. Various solid wastes including plastics have been mainly treated by landfill, incineration, and recycling methods, but these methods cannot completely solve the environmental pollution problem.
Therefore, as one of the solutions to these problems, much attention is focused on the development of biodegradable plastics that maintain their function and structure during use but are decomposed into water and carbon dioxide by microorganisms once discarded.

Onion peel powder is a finely crushed peel, which is the inedible part of an onion. The onion skin powder may be pulverized to a particle size of 100 to 400 mesh. Onion skins are wastes of natural materials generated during the onion processing process. Unlike the edible part, the stalk, which is the edible part of the onion, most of it is discarded. Onion skins differ from stalks in that they consist of lignified fibers.
Onion skins contain a large amount of polyphenols, especially quercetin. Onion skin contains about 10 to 100 times higher polyphenols including quercetin than the edible part of the onion, the scales. Therefore, when the onion skin is added, biodegradability can be increased, and at the same time, it is possible to prevent thermal deformation and discoloration by inhibiting the oxidation of plastic, thereby improving durability.
Onion peel powder contains 0.1 to 20 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of the biodegradable resin. If the content of the onion skin powder is less than 0.1 parts by weight, the effect is insignificant, and if it exceeds 20 parts by weight, the strength may be lowered.
The compound for biodegradable plastics of the present invention can be obtained in the form of pellets by extruding after melting and kneading a mixture of a biodegradable resin and onion peel powder.
On the other hand, the present invention may further contain a banana peel powder as another example. For example, it contains 0.1 to 20 parts by weight of onion peel powder and 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of banana peel powder with respect to 100 parts by weight of the biodegradable resin.
Bananas are an important fruit crop with an annual output of 500,000 tons, and are mainly produced in India, China, the Philippines, and Brazil. Banana peels, the main by-product of bananas, account for 30% of bananas. Banana peels generated while eating and processing bananas are mostly discarded or reduced to food waste, becoming a major cause of environmental pollution.
Banana peel consists of fiber, protein, essential amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, potassium, etc., and contains cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, chlorophyll pigment, and low molecular weight components. In addition, it contains a large amount of phenolic compounds such as tannin, anthocyanin, delphinidin, cyanidin, catecholamine, carotenoid, lutein, triterpene, etc. is known to have been In addition, the rich fiber of banana peel has a high water absorption capacity, so it serves as a precursor to adsorb metal substances, colorants, pesticides and contaminants such as food.
Banana peel powder is ground after drying the peel, which is the non-edible part of the banana fruit except for the pulp. Banana peels can be dried by hot air drying, freeze drying, or natural drying methods. Banana peel powder may be pulverized to a particle size of 100 to 400 mesh.
The present invention can improve tensile strength and elongation by adding banana peel powder.
The present invention may further contain limecake powder as another example. For example, it may contain 0.1 to 20 parts by weight of onion peel powder, 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of banana peel powder, and 1 to 5 parts by weight of lime cake powder with respect to 100 parts by weight of the biodegradable resin.
Lime cake is produced in the sugar-sweetening process. When quicklime is added to crude sugar juice during the sugar processing process and carbon dioxide is blown in, wastewater is generated when calcium carbonate is filtered, and when this wastewater is dehydrated, limecake with 30-40% moisture is generated. Limecake contains suspended substances such as coal, activated carbon, and diatomaceous earth and organic substances such as sugar juice. Currently, limecake is partially used as a fertilizer or soil conditioner, but it is known that most of it is disposed of in landfills as industrial waste. Accordingly, the present invention can improve processability, moldability, and physical properties of biodegradable plastics by using the discarded limecake.
Limecake is dried to a moisture content of 8 wt% or less and then pulverized to be used in powder form.
On the other hand, in the present invention, of course, known additives such as a plasticizer may be further added.
The compound for biodegradable plastics of the present invention can be used in the manufacture of various plastic products by extrusion or injection molding. For example, it can be used to manufacture products such as bags, films, sheets, containers, and packs.
