Description
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device and a manufacturing method thereof, and more particularly to a liquid crystal display device and a method for manufacturing the same that can maintain a constant cell gap thickness.
In line with the information age, the display field has also been rapidly developed, and as a flat panel display device (FPD) having advantages of thinning, light weight, and low power consumption, a liquid crystal display device: LCD and organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays have excellent performance and are widely used.
Here, liquid crystal display devices (LCDs), which are advantageous for moving image display and have a large contrast ratio, are actively used in TVs, monitors, and the like, are characterized by optical anisotropy and polarization properties of liquid crystals. principle of image implementation by polarization).
Such a liquid crystal display is an essential component of a liquid crystal panel in which a liquid crystal layer is bonded between two parallel substrates through a liquid crystal layer, and the arrangement direction of liquid crystal molecules is changed by an electric field in the liquid crystal panel to change the transmittance difference. Implement
The liquid crystal panel includes a first substrate on which a thin film transistor is formed, a black matrix facing the non-display area, a second substrate on which a color filter layer including color filter patterns for realizing color is formed, and between the first and second substrates. It consists of a liquid crystal layer interposed in.
Here, in the color filter layer, red, green, and blue color filter patterns have been repeatedly included in the related art, but a white image implemented by such a mixture of red, green, and blue has a relatively low luminance, and thus high luminance has recently been realized. In order to form a color filter layer having a structure of a four color filter pattern by additionally including a white color filter pattern.
In this case, each of the red, green, and blue color filter patterns is formed using a color pigment, but the white color filter pattern is a color pigment forming a red, green, and blue color filter pattern, because a white color pigment cannot be produced. It is formed by applying a material different from the, thereby forming a white color filter pattern is higher than the red, green and blue color filter patterns.
Although a planarization layer is formed on the top of the color filter layer to planarize the surface, the leveling caused by the white color filter pattern cannot be eliminated even by the planarization layer.
Due to such a step, there is a problem in that the cell gap is not kept uniform and an unwanted area is displayed on the display area. In more detail, as the white color filter pattern is formed higher than the red, green, and blue color filter patterns, the cell gap corresponding to the white color filter pattern is larger than the cell gap corresponding to the red, green and blue color filter patterns. It is narrowly formed.
Due to such a gap in the cell gap, there is a problem that an unintended vertical line is visible in the display area.
Accordingly, a first method of stacking red, green, and blue color filter patterns on top of the black matrix to compensate for the step caused by the white color filter pattern and to keep the cell gap constant, and to form a high leveling layer on the top of the color filter layer. The second method or the third method of eliminating the step when forming the column spacer is applied, but in the case of the first method, there is a problem that it is difficult to apply the mass production and increase the material cost as the process for lamination increases. In the case of the liquid crystal display, the liquid crystal display device has a large area, and the material cost increases, and there is a problem in that there is a limit to the flattening. In the third method, a high-cost multitone mask is required and mass production is difficult.

On the other hand, the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention comprises: a first substrate including first to fourth unit pixels; A red, green, and blue color filter pattern formed on the first substrate corresponding to each of the first to third unit pixels, and corresponding to the fourth unit pixel, and compared to the red, green, and blue color filter patterns. According to the liquid crystal display of the present invention and a method for manufacturing the same, a gap maintaining means is applied to a portion corresponding to a white color filter pattern by applying a halftone exposure mask (or a normal exposure mask) during exposure to form an organic protective layer. 4A and 4D are cross-sectional views illustrating a method of manufacturing the array substrate of FIG. 1.
First, as shown in FIG. 4A, a thin film transistor Tr is formed.
Next, as shown in FIG. 4B, an organic insulating material having photosensitive properties, for example, photoacryl, is coated on the entire surface of the inorganic

The
In this case, the blocking
The
Accordingly, the
Subsequently, after exposing and exposing the exposed insulating
At this time, one end of the
Although not shown in the drawings, the resist layer may use a negative type in which an exposed portion remains. In this case, the
As described above, in the present invention, the thickness of the
Although not shown in the drawings, an organic protective layer including a gap holding hole may be formed in the array substrate as a gap holding means in a method different from the above-described method to compensate for the step caused by the white color filter pattern. In more detail, the front surface of the first transparent substrate on which the color filter layer is formed includes a protrusion protruding to a fifth thickness thicker than the first thickness in correspondence to the white color filter pattern and formed of a fourth thickness thinner than the third thickness. An overcoat layer is formed. In addition, a photosensitive organic material is coated on the front surface of the second transparent substrate on which the inorganic protective layer is formed to form an insulating layer, and then an exposure mask including a blocking area and a transmitting area is positioned on the insulating layer. Let's do it. In this case, the transmissive area of the exposure mask is positioned to correspond to the part where the insulating layer is to be removed, that is, the part where the contact hole and the gap holding hole are to be formed later, and the light shielding area is located in the remaining part. Subsequently, when the exposure is performed and the development process is performed, an organic protective layer including a contact hole exposing the drain electrode and a gap holding hole exposing the gate insulating layer may be formed. Accordingly, the gap holding hole is formed to have the same thickness as the entire thickness of the organic protective layer. At this time, it is preferable that the connection portion between the gap maintaining hole and the contact hole adjacent to the gap holding hole is widely adjusted at one end of the transmission area such that a step does not occur as described above. As such, by forming an organic protective layer including a gap holding hole by applying a general exposure mask, the gap between the white color filter patterns of the color filter substrate may be compensated and the cell gap may be kept constant. In this case, the material cost can be reduced because the overcoat layer of the color filter substrate is formed to a fourth thickness thinner than the third thickness to compensate a part of the step caused by the white color filter pattern. In addition, since it is possible to apply an exposure mask (normal exposure mask) that is cheaper and easier to manufacture than a halftone exposure mask, it is possible to reduce the manufacturing cost of the entire liquid crystal display device.
