Field of invention
Exemplary embodiments of the present invention generally relate to shelf assemblies for use in product merchandising, and more particularly to shelf assemblies having improved mechanisms for exhibiting and pushing products on shelves.
Retail and wholesalers such as convenience stores, pharmacies, grocery stores, and discount stores are known to require large quantities of shelves to store and display products to consumers. When the product is displayed, it is preferable that the product on the shelf is arranged toward the front of the shelf so that the product can be seen and accessible to the consumer. In the case of coolers or refrigerators used to store and display products such as soft drinks, energy drinks, bottled water and other bottles or canned beverages, these products may also be placed towards the front of the shelf, It is desirable to be visible and accessible.
To achieve this arrangement of the product, the known system may include a tilted tray or floor that can move the product towards the front of the shelf by gravity. Many of these systems include floors or shelves of plastic materials, such as polypropylene, that allow the product to slide easily along sloping floors or surfaces due to its low coefficient of friction. However, over time, these surfaces can become clogged with foreign or viscous materials, which interfere with the proper sliding of the product, so that sometimes multiple products fall and thus block further products from moving forward in the shelf .
Other systems include the use of a pusher system to push the product toward the front of the shelf when the product is removed from the front of the shelf. Known pusher systems are typically mounted on tracks and include pusher paddles and coiled springs for urging the product forward. Occasionally, when the system is used, and over time, the track is clogged with dust or viscous material that interferes with proper operation of the pusher system in the track. Also, depending on the size, shape and weight of the merchandised product, known pusher paddles are sometimes tilted or bent backward, thereby causing constraint of the pusher mechanism in the track. In these situations, the pusher mechanism can not properly push the product toward the front of the shelf.
One exemplary embodiment relates to improving existing merchandising systems by providing a gravity feed merchandising system (i.e., a sloped shelf or tray) and a trackless pusher system that works in conjunction with a non-gravity feed merchandising system.
An exemplary embodiment relates to a product management display system for merchandising a product on a shelf. This embodiment includes using a trackless pusher mechanism that moves along a surface on which the article is placed. Trackless systems overcome known problems by using tracks to maintain and guide the known pusher mechanism. It should be understood, however, that the teachings of this embodiment can be used with systems including tracks, etc., for mounting pusher mechanisms.
The pusher mechanism may include a pusher paddle and a floor extending forward of the pusher paddle. A flat coil spring or other deflection element may be operatively connected behind the pusher paddles and extend across the floor of the pusher mechanism and forward of the shelf. Alternatively, a flat coil spring or biasing element may extend forward of the shelf assembly across the divider. With this arrangement, the pusher paddles are prevented from tilting or bending backward during operation.
The exemplary embodiments also include the use of gravity systems as gravity delivery systems or mechanisms for pushing products toward the front of the shelf, and the use of pusher mechanisms to commoditize products on horizontal or non-warped shelves or surfaces.
According to exemplary illustrative embodiments of the present invention, pusher paddles may form a concave pushing surface for pushing a cylindrical product such as a soft drink bottle or can, and to maintain the paddles behind the product and on the track in a centered state . Alternatively, the pusher paddles may also form a flat pushing surface that may further include a curved rib or similar structure on its upper edge that may be used to push the cylindrical article.
According to another exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the floor of the pusher mechanism may include a notch or cut out portion to align the pusher mechanism with respect to the coiled spring. The floor of the system may also include a notch or cutout for receiving the flat end of the coiled spring and mounting the floor to the floor. The spring tip may be placed on the end of the coiled spring to mount the coiled spring to the floor of the system. Alternatively, the end of the coiled spring may be mounted to the divider of the assembly.
According to another exemplary embodiment, an adapter for a product management display system may be located on the floor surface of the display system. The adapter may include a planar surface having at least two ribs extending in a substantially parallel manner across the planar surface and outwardly from the planar surface. The coil spring may be positioned between the ribs extending in parallel. In such an arrangement, the product to be commoditized can be placed on the rib, and can not be placed directly on the coiled spring, thereby improving the forward movement of certain types of products such as beverage cans.
In yet another alternative aspect, a mounting member may be used to mount the end of the coiled spring to the floor of the system. For systems comprising spaced rung rails joined together by connecting ribs, the mounting members can be mounted between the rung rails and on the floor in a snap-fit or otherwise manner.
In yet another alternative aspect, the trackless pusher system is retrofitted to an existing shelf assembly. This allows the trackless pusher system to be placed in existing shelf systems as a low cost alternative to commercializing the entire trackless pusher assembly.
In another exemplary embodiment, the coiled spring may be mounted to the retainer. One end of the coiled spring may be directly mounted to the retainer, or alternatively, the end may be mounted to the retainer through an adapter. The adapter may have a flexure portion that is received in a correspondingly-shaped slot in the retainer to secure the end of the spring to the display assembly.
In another exemplary embodiment, the tray may be attached through a dovetail connection to form a shelf assembly. Additionally, the divider can be adjusted so that the width of the product row can be configured to accommodate products of various sizes.
According to another exemplary embodiment, the product management display system may be arranged in a stackable arrangement. The assembly may include a first tray and a second tray each having a first wall and a second wall. The first and second trays are each configured to receive a pusher mechanism and a retainer mechanism. The first and second spacers are mounted to the first and second trays to stack the first and second trays on top of each other. The first and second spacers may have a plurality of detents and the first tray and the second tray may each include a plurality of correspondingly shaped receptacles to receive a plurality of detents.
According to another exemplary embodiment, the product management display system may include at least one tray having a front rounded portion, forming a plurality of apertures, and having two sides. The lip can extend upwardly from the front rounded portion of at least one tray. The front shelf may extend forward from the lip. The at least one tray may include one divider extending upwardly from each of the two side and front walls. The front wall may include a top wall, a bottom wall and two side legs. The top wall, bottom wall and two side legs form a wall gap, and the front wall may include a plurality of protrusions configured to engage a plurality of gaps on the tray.
