A text input apparatus in a portable terminal and a method thereof are provided to input a desired foreign language without executing a special mode transfer operation by obtaining and displaying a foreign language corresponding to a character inputted in Hangul in case a user inputs a foreign language in Hangul input mode. A text input apparatus in a portable terminal(100) comprises a storage part(110), an input part(120), a character management part(130), a searching part(140), a control part(150), and a display part(160).
