Abstract

PURPOSE: A two-dimensional noise filter is provided to powerfully eliminate noise for flat image regions and maintain video signals for detailed image regions more successfully to improve picture quality. CONSTITUTION: A two-dimensional noise filter includes a local dispersion calculator(101), a noise dispersion determination unit(103), a signal dispersion estimator(102), a threshold calculator(104), and a filter(105). The local dispersion calculator calculates local dispersion with respect to an input pixel having an arbitrary dimension. The noise dispersion determination unit detects noise dispersion with respect to the input pixel. The signal dispersion estimator receives the local dispersion and the noise dispersion to estimate dispersion of the original signal having no noise. The threshold calculator adaptively determines a threshold according to a variation in the dispersion of the original signal and the noise dispersion. The filter outputs an average value of pixels in a support region when the magnitude of a difference signal of the input pixel and the pixels in the support region is smaller than the threshold but outputs the input pixel without any change when the magnitude of a difference signal of the input pixel and the pixels in the support region is larger than the threshold.
