Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a slider for a hard disk drive.
Hard disk drives have a magnetic head for magnetizing and sensing magnetic fields on the disk. This magnetic head is integrated into the slider mounted to the suspension arm. The head, slider, and suspension arm are commonly referred to as the Head Gimbal Assembly (hereinafter referred to as “HGA”). The HGA is a cantilever from an actuator arm that moves the head across the surface of the disc. The slider has a hydrodynamic characteristic that creates an air bearing between the head and the rotating disk, which prevents frictional wear between the disk and the head.
The height of the air bearings is very important for the operation of the disc drive. For this reason, the HGA is typically tested before being installed in a disk drive. The HGA is tested by a flying height tester that measures the height of the air bearing between the head and the disk. Most float height testers measure the height of an air bearing with a light beam that is reflected from the air bearing interface. The testers have an optical system for detecting and analyzing state changes on the reflected light beam.
As shown in FIG. 1, a hard protective coating 1 can be applied to the air bearing surface of the
Due to this thin film, the light beam 5 penetrates the film and is reflected from the film interface in the slider. The coatings and films are constructed as different materials, each having a specific birefringence defined by the sum of the real refractive index n and the extinction coefficient k. For example, the outer coating has a real refractive index n1 and an extinction coefficient k1. The next layer has a real refractive index n2 and an extinction coefficient k2, and the next layer has a real refractive index n3 and an extinction coefficient k3. Different materials change the phase of the reflected light beam due to different refractive indices, and these different phase changes reduce the accuracy of the lift height tester.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a slider having a total reflection surface for effectively measuring the air bearing height of an HGA by an optical measuring system.
The slider of the present invention for achieving the above object has a recess area and a rail. The rail is coated with a first film that is thin enough that light beams are transmitted and reflected from the layered surface within the slider. The recessed region includes a second film through which totally reflected light beams are not transmitted. The outer air bearing surface of the first film is spaced away from the outer surface of the second film by a height H measured before testing the HGA. The HGA is then placed adjacent to the rotating disk to produce an air bearing with a height Hp. The outer surface of the second film is spaced apart from the disk by a height Hv. The optical system directs a light beam into the recessed area to measure the height Hv between the disk and the outer surface of the second film. The air bearing height Hp is calculated by subtracting the measured height H from the measured height Hv. The second film provides a test surface having optical properties that can more accurately measure the air bearing height than conventional sliders.

Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Referring to FIG. 2, there is shown a head gimbal assembly (HGA) 10 that is in a floating state from the rotating
As shown in FIG. 3, the air flow generated by the rotating
As shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, the
The air bearing
The
In an optimal embodiment, the
The
The first and
The present invention is applicable to floating height measurement calibration on film coated air bearing surfaces. The air bearing float height Hp is measured directly on the
