Abstract
본 발명은 수동형 편광변환기(passive polarization converter) 및 그를 이용한 편광변환방법에 관한 것이다. 좀 더 구체적으로, 본 발명은 전기광학 폴리머(electro-optic polymer)로 이루어진 광도파로를 이용하여 도파광의 파장에 무관하게 광도파로의 광축방향을 변환시킬 수 있는 수동형 편광변환기 및 그를 이용한 편광변환방법에 관한 것이다. 본 발명의 편광변환기는 3층의 전기광학 폴리머로 이루어진 평면 광도파로(1)의 상하부에 폴링전극(2)이 형성되며, 광도파로(3)의 코어부를 수평 또는 수직방향으로 폴링시키기 위한 편광부(10); 전기한 편광부(10)에 의한 폴링에 의해 형성된 광도파로(3)의 광축방향을 직각방향으로 회전시키기 위한 편광회전부(20); 및, 전기한 편광부(10)에서 폴링된 광도파로(3)의 광축방향과 직각방향으로 광도파로(3)를 폴링시키기 위한 분석부(30)로 구성된다. 본 발명의 수동형 편광변환기는 도파광의 파장에 무관하게 편광변환을 일으킬 수 있고 도파광의 산란현상이 발생되지 않는다는 효과를 지니고 있으며, 본 발명의 편광변환방법에 의해 도파광의 산란발생없이 도파관의 파장에 무관하게 간단하면서도 효율적으로 편광변환시킬 수 있다.

제1도는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 수동형 편광변환기의 개략도이다.

본 발명은 수동형 편광변환기 및 그를 이용한 편광변환방법에 관한 것이다. 좀 더 구체적으로, 본 발명은 전기광학 폴리머로 이루어진 광도파로를 이용하여 도파광의 파장에 무관하게 광도파로의 광축방향을 변화시킬 수 있는 수동형 편광변환기 및 그를 이용한 편광변환방법에 관한 것이다.
광도파로(waveguide)형 편광변환기(polarization converter)는 도파광의 편광을 원하는 방향으로 변화시키는 광변환 소자로서, 다양한 집접광학 소자로서 응용가능한 기본소자이다.
최근의 집적광학의 발전에 따라, 효율적인 편광변환기를 개발하려는 연구가 활발히 진행되어 왔으며, 이와 관련된 종래기술에 대하여는 다음과 같은 문헌에 개시되어 있다:
알페메스(R. C. Alfemess) 등과 슈락(M. Schlak) 등은 LiNBO3및 InP를 이용한 광도파로형 TE/TM(transverse electric/transverse magnetic) 편광변환기를 개시하고 있다[참조: R. C. Alfemess et al, Appl. Phys. Lett., 38(9):655-657(1981); M. Schlak et al, Electron. Lett., 22(17):883-885(1986)].
또한, 하이스만(F. Heismann) 등은 전기한 편광변환기를 이용하여 편광을 조절함으로써, 편광에 무관하게 동작할 수 있는 광교환 시스템(photonic switching system)에 대하여 개시하고 있다[참조: F. Heismann et al, IEEE Photon. Technol. Lett., 5(11):1341-1343(1993)].
그러나, 전기한 편광변환기는 외부에서 전압을 인가하여야만 동작이 가능하다는 문제점을 지녀, 최근에는 외부에서 전압을 인가할 필요없이 수동적으로 동작하는 편광변환기를 개발하려는 일련의 시도가 행하여져 왔으며, 이와 관련된 종래기술에 대하여는 다음과 같은 문헌에 개시되어 있다:
캐나다 특허 CA 2,068,439호에는 주기적인 구조로 형성되어 신호진행의 모드(signal propagation mode)를 변환시키는 수동형(passive) 편광변환기에 대하여 개시되어 있다.
또한, 샤니(Y. Shani) 등은 비대칭적이면서 주기적으로 형성된 립(rib) 구조의 광도파로를 사용한 편광변환기를 제시하였다[참조: Y. Shani et al, Appl. Phys. Lett., 59(11):1278-1280(1991)].
아울러, 하이드리히(H. Heidrich)는 주기적으로 경사진 InP/GaInAsP의 광도파로가 구비된 수동형 편광변환기에 대하여 개시하고 있다[참조: H. Heidrich, IEEE Photon. Technol. Lett., 4(1):34-36(10992)].
전기한 종래의 수동형 편광변환기는 광도파로의 클래딩(cladding) 또는 코어(core) 구조를 주기적으로 변화시켜 편광 간의 결합(polarization coupling)을 발생하도록 형성된 소자이다.
그러나, 전기한 종래의 편광변환기는 주기적인 구조를 이용하기 때문에, 도파광의 파장에 민감하게 반응하고 원하는 광파장에 대하여 편광변환이 일어나도록 하기 위해서는 매우 정밀한 설계과정이 요구되며, 주기적인 섭동구조를 지니기 때문에, 도파광의 산란이 발생하여 소자의 도파손실을 증대시킨다는 문제점을 지니고 있었다.
결국, 본 발명은 전기한 종래기술의 문제점을 해결하기 위한 것으로, 본 발명의 주된 목적은 도파광의 파장에 무관하게 편광변환을 일으킬 수 있으며 도파광의 산란발생이 없는 수동형 편광변환기를 제공함에 있다.
본 발명의 또다른 목적은 전기한 본 발명의 수동형 편광변환기를 사용하여 도파광의 산란발생없이 도파관의 파장에 무관하게 간단하면서도 효율적으로 편광변환기시키는 방법을 제공함에 있다.
상기한 목적을 달성하는 본 발명의 수동형 편광변환기는, 3층의 전기광학 폴리머(electro-optic polymer)로 이루어진 평면 광도파로의 상하부에 폴링전극(poling electrode)이 형성되며, 광도파로의 코어부를 수평 또는 수직방향으로 폴링시키기 위한 편광부(polarizer); 전기한 편광부에 의한 폴링에 의해 형성된 광도파로의 광축(optic axis)방향을 직각방향으로 회전시키기 위한 편광회전부(polarization rotator); 및, 전기한 편광부에서 폴링된 광도파로의 광축방향가 직각방향으로 광도파로를 폴링시키기 위한 분석부(analyzer)로 구성된다.
또한, 본 발명의 편광변환방법은, 전기광학 폴리머로 이루어진 평면 광도파로의 상하부에 형성된 폴링전극에 전계를 인가함으로써 편광부에 의해 광도파로의 코어부를 수평 또는 수직방향으로 폴링시키는 단계; 전기한 폴링단계에 의해 형성된 광도파로의 광축방향을 광파의 진행방향으로 서서히 변화하는 전극구조를 지닌 편광회전부에 의해 광도파로의 광축방향을 직각방향으로 회전시키는 단계; 및, 전기한 폴링단계에서 폴링된 광도파로의 광축방향과 직각방향으로 분석부에 의해 광도파로를 폴링시키는 단계를 포함한다.
이하, 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 따른 수동형 편광변환기 및 전기한 편광변환기를 이용한 편광변환방법을 첨부도면을 참조하여 보다 상세히 설명한다.
제1도는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 수동형 편광변환기의 개략도이며, 제2도는 제1도에 도시한 편광변환기의 평면도이다.
제1도 및 제2도에 도시된 바와 같이, 본 발명의 수동형 편광변환기는 3층의 전기광학 폴리머로 이루어진 평면 광도파로(1)의 상하부에 폴링전극(2)이 형성되며, 광도파로(3)의 코어부를 수평방향으로 폴링시키기 위한 편광부(10); 전기한 편광부(10)에 의한 폴링에 의해 형성된 광도파로(3)의 광축방향을 수직방향으로 회전시키기 위한 편광회전부(20); 및 전기한 편광부(10)에서 폴링된 광도파로(3)의 광축방향과 직각방향으로 광도파로(3)를 폴링시키기 위한 분석부(30)로 구성된다.
본 발명의 수동형 편광변환기에 사용된 전기광학 폴리머 전계를 가하여 폴링시키게 되면, 빛에 대한 굴절율이 증가하게 되고 광학적 단축매질로 변화하는 특성을 지니고 있다[참조: J. W. Wu,, J. Opt. Soc. Am. B, 8(1):142-151(1991)]. 따라서, 전기한 폴링공정을 사용하게 되면 한가지의 편광성분 만을 도파시킬 수 있는 광도파로를 용이하게 제조할 수 있다[참조: J. I. Thackara et al, Appl. Phys. Lett., 52:1031-1033(1988)].
아울러, 전기한 폴링용 전극을 적절히 설계할 경우에는 폴링된 광도파로의 광축이 광파의 진행방향(propagation direction)을 따라 서서히 회전하는 구조를 지닌 수동형 편광변환기를 제조할 수 있으며, 이러한 단축 광도파로를 지나는 도파광의 편광은 광도파로의 광축방향을 따라 변화하게 된다[참조: C. L. Xu et al, J. Lightwave Technol., 12(11):1926-1931(1994)].
결국, 폴링에 의해 형성된 광도파로의 광축방향을 편광변환기의 기판에 대하여 수평방향에서 개시하여 수직방향으로 변화하도록 형성하면 도파광의 편광을 TE 모드에서 TM 모드로 변화시킬 수 있는 편광변환기를 제조할 수 있게 된다.
제1도 및 제2도에 도시된 본 발명의 수동형 편광변환기는 도파광의 편광을 TE 모드에서 TM 모드로 변환시킬 수 있는 편광변환기로서, 도시된 바와 같이, 본 발명의 편광변환기는 크기 편광부(10), 편광회전부(20) 및 분석부(30)로 구성되며, 3층의 전기광학 폴리머로 이루어진 평면 광도파로(1)의 상하에는 폴링전극(2)이 형성되며, 전기한 폴링전극(2)에 전계를 가하게 되면 3차원의 채널(channel) 광도파로(3)가 형성되게 된다.
이때, 편광부(10)는 그 상하부에 평행한 4개의 폴링전극(2)이 형성되어, 광도파로(3)의 코어부를 수평방향으로 폴링시키는 역할을 하게 되는데, 제1도에 도시된 극성(polarity)에 따라 전계를 인가하게 되면 코어층에서의 전계분포는 대부분 수평방향 성분을 지니게 된다. 이와같이 전기광학 폴리머를 수평방향으로 폴링하여 복굴절성(birefringence)을 지니게 형성하면 광도파로(3)의 코어부의 굴절율이 TE 편광에 대해서는 증가하게 되나, TM 편광에 대해서는 감소하게 되므로, 편광부(10)는 TE 편광 만을 통과시키는 일종의 편광필터(polarization filter)로 작용하게 된다.
또한, 편광부(10)에 인접하여 형성된 편광회전부(20)는 광파의 진행방향으로 서서히 변화하는 전극구조를 지니고 있으며, 폴링으로 형성된 광도파로(3)의 광축방향을 수평방향으로부터 수직방향으로 서서히 회전시키는 역할을 하게 된다. 이때, 편광회전부(20)의 광축분포를 특정한 방향으로 정확히 조절할 필요는 없으며, 단지 광축의 회전속도가 산란손실을 일으키지 않을 정도까지 광축방향을 서서히 변화시키게 되면 편광변환기의 동작에는 어떠한 문제도 발생치 않게 된다.
아울러, 편광회전부(20)에 인접하여 형성된 분석부(30)에는 2개의 폴링전극(2)이 상하부에 정렬되어 형성되며, 전기한 분석부(30)는 편광부(10)와 반대로 광도파로(3)를 수직방향으로 폴링시킴으로써 TM 편광에 대한 굴절율을 증대시켜 TM 통과필터로 작용하게 된다. 참고로, 본 발명의 편광변환기의 전극구조에 의해 형성된 폴링전계 또는 광도파로의 광축방향을 제1도의 편광변환기의 우측에 도시하였다.
한편, 전기한 본 발명의 편광변환기를 이용하여 편광변환을 시키기 위하여는, 전기광학 폴리머로 이루어진 평면 광도파로(1)의 상하부에 형성된 폴링전극(2)에 전계를 인가함으로써 편광부(10)에 의해 광도파로(3)의 코어부를 수평방향으로 폴링시키고, 전기한 폴링단계에 의해 형성된 광도파로(3)의 광축방향을 광파의 진행방향으로 서서히 변화하는 전극구조를 지닌 편광회전부(20)에 의해 광도파로(3)의 광축방향을 수직방향으로 회전시킨 다음, 전기한 폴링단계에서 폴링된 광도파로(3)의 광축방향과 직각방향으로 분석부(30)에 의해 광도파로를 폴링시킨다.
결국, 빛이 본 발명의 편광변환기 소자에 입사하게 되면 편광부(10)에서 TE 편광을 지닌 도파모드가 형성되며, 편광회전부(20)를 통하여 도파광이 진행됨에 따라 TE 편광은 TM 편광으로 서서히 변화하게 되며, 분석부(30)에 의해 TM 편광으로 폴링된 도파광은 분석부(30)를 통하여 출력되게 된다.
따라서, 본 발명의 수동형 편광변환기는 종래의 편광변환기와 달리, 도파광의 파장에 무관하게 편광변환을 일으킬 수 있으므로, 정밀한 설계과정이 필요없으며, 도파광의 산란발생에 의한 소자의 도파손실이 일어나지 않게 된다.
전술한 실시예에서는 도파광의 편광을 TE 모드에서 TM 모드로 변환시킬 수 있는 편광변환기에 한정하여 언급하였지만, 전기한 편광변환기의 입출력 방향을 역으로 하여 도파광의 진행방향을 반대로 하게 되면, TM 편광을 TE 편광으로 변환시킬 수 있는 편광변환기를 제조할 수 있다.
이상에서 상세히 설명한 바와 같이, 본 발명의 수동형 편광변환기는 도파광의 파장에 무관하게 편광변환을 일으킬 수 있고 도파광의 산란현상이 발생되지 않는다는 효과를 지니고 있으며, 본 발명의 편광변환방법에 의해 도파광의 산란발생없이 도파관의 파장에 무관하게 간단하면서도 효율적으로 편광변환시킬 수 있다.
Claims (1)
- 광도파로의 코어부를 수평 또는 수직방향으로 폴링시키기 위한 편광부; 전기한 편광부에서 폴링된 광도파로의 광축방향을, 직각방향으로 회전시키기 위한 편광 회전부; 및, 전기한 편광부에서 폴링된 광도파로의 광축방향과 직각방향으로 광도파로를 폴링시키기 위한 분석부를 포함하며, 3층의 전기광학 폴리머로 이루어진 평면 광도파로의 상하부에 4개의 폴링전극을 지닌 수동 편광변환기.
