본 발명은 활성 매트릭스 감색(subtractive color) 디스플레이에 관한 것으로, 특히, 편광(polarization) 회전 소자로서 액정을 사용하고 액정 픽셀의 투영부 내에서 디스플레이 메카니즘을 통해 광 전파를 유지하는 소형 디스플레이에 관한 것이다.
[관련된 기술 분야의 설명]
액정이 각각이 독립적으로 전자 제어되는 각 픽셀 내에 정렬(alignment)되어 있는, 픽셀 어레이로 나누어지는 활성 매트릭스 액정 셀(cell)이 공지되어 있다. 이 활성 매트릭스 어레이의 일부가 제1도에 도시되어 있다. 전기 도선(lead line : 2)의 그리드가 셀의 각 픽셀(6) 내의 트랜지스터(4)를 제어하기 위해 활성 신호(activating signal)를 제공한다. 투명 플레이트 전극(도시되지 않음)은 각 픽셀의 전후면(front and rear surfaces) 상에 제공되고, 픽셀 트랜지스터(4)에 인가된 신호에 따라 각 픽셀의 전극 사이에 전계가 형성된다. 각 픽셀 내의 액정은 전계 세기에 따라 변하는 각의 배향(angular orientation)을 취한다. 다음으로 액정 배향은 픽셀을 통해 전송된 광의 편광 방향을 확립한다. 따라서 각 픽셀을 통해 전송된 편광 광(polarized light)의 편광 각(polarization angle)은 다수의 픽셀 트랜지스터에 소정 패턴의 전기 신호를 인가함으로써 제어될 수 있다.

액정 셀(12)은 전극 플레이트 양단의 전압을 제어하기 위한 전기 입력부(38)를 갖고 있는 투명 전극(34, 36) 사이에 끼워진 액정 층(32)으로 구성된다. 마찬가지로, 액정 셀(20)은 전기 입력부(46)를 갖고 있는 투명 전극 플레이트(42, 44)에 의해 제한된 액정 층(40)으로 구성되고, 셀(26)은 전기 입력부(54)를 갖고 있는 투명전극 플레이트(50, 52)에 의해 제한된 액정 층(48)으로 구성된다.

헬멧 장착 디스플레이와 같은 소형 응용 분야에서 사용될 때, 광이 디스플레이를 통해 처리됨에 따라 중요한 광 손실의 문제점이 발생한다. 예를 들어, 3개의 감색을 갖고 있는 1,024×1,280 픽셀 디스플레이는 총 3×1024×1280 = 3,932,160의 개별적으로 에너지화되는 액정 픽셀들을 갖는다. 소형 디스플레이에 있어서, 액정 픽셀 사이의 센터-투-센터 스페이싱(center-to-center spacing)은 약 25 ㎛(미크론)일 수 있고, 총 픽셀 영역은 약 25×25 미크론일 수 있고, 그 중 투명 영역은 약 18×18 미크론을 차지한다. 광원으로부터 시준된 광은, 각 픽셀의 투명 영역을 통과한 후에, 픽셀의 크기가 감소됨에 따라 점차 커지는 발산 각도로 회절된다. 18×18 미크론 픽셀에 있어서, 픽셀로부터 2mm 거리에서의 광 세기는 약 0.2 mm에서의 광 세기의 약 7%로 떨어진다. 입력 빔이 시준이 아니라 발산되는 경우에는 이러한 광 손실이 더 많아진다.
광 발산은 감색 디스플레이에 매우 좋지 않은 영향을 미친다. 제1액정 층의 각 픽셀을 통과하는 광이 다음 층에서 대응하는 픽셀을 통해 이상적으로 통과함에 반하여, 광 발산의 효과는 제1층의 소정의 픽셀로부터의 광의 일부가 다음 층의 비대응 픽셀(non-corresponding pixel)에 전송되거나, 픽셀이 주변의 근처에 전송된다면 완전히 디스플레이로부터 손실되는 것이다. 이로 인해 해상도 및 휘도 모두가 나빠진다.
[본 발명의 요약]
본 발명의 목적은 휘도 및 해상도의 손실이 극히 적은 소형의 활성 매트릭스 액정 감색 디스플레이를 제공하는 것이다.

[발명의 상세한 설명]
본 발명은 한 액정 층에서 다음 층으로, 및 최종 액정 층에서 화면으로 각 픽셀을 재이미지화하기(relmage) 위해 마이크로렌즈 어레이 시리즈를 사용한다. 따라서, 1,024×1,280 어레이를 위해, 1,310,720 마이크로렌즈가 각 층 사이에 필요하다. 마이크로렌즈는, 픽셀들의 투영부 내의 연속적인 셀 사이의 광 손실을 제한하도록 구성된다.
그러나, 간단한 마이크로렌즈 어레이는 이 목적에 부적합하다. 이것은 제3도에 도시되어 있는데, 3개의 액정 셀들(12, 20 및 26)이 화면을 가장 가까운 액정 셀(26)에 표시하는 디스플레이 스크린(56)을 따라 도시되어 있다. 동일한 참조 번호는 동일한 셀 구조가 이용될 수 있다는 것을 표시하고, 제2도의 활성 매트릭스 액정 셀들에서도 사용된다. 이 도면에서, 색 편광은 편의상 도시되지 않았지만, 실제로 존재한다.

어셈블리를 보다 소형으로 할 수 있는 다른 렌즈리트 변형이 제6도에 도시되어 있다. 이 실시예에서, 렌즈리트는 키노폼(kinoform) 렌즈리트(68, 70, 72, 74, 76, 78)와 함께 구현된다. 키노폼 렌즈는 입사 광의 한 파장에 도달할 때마다 두께가 최소값으로 리셋된 프레넬 렌즈이다. 키노폼은 렌즈 형태의 스테어 스텝(stair step) 기법을 달성하기 위해 바이너리 광학을 사용하여 제조될 수 있다.
렌즈 두께의 감소가 이러한 기법에 의해 어느 정도 가능하더라도, 제4도의 렌즈리트는 매우 얇고, 키노폼 렌즈리트로부터 얻어지는 부가적인 실제이익이 크지 않다.
액정 셀들 사이의 각 렌즈리트 쌍은 이제부터 텔레센트릭(telecentric) 어포컬(afocal) 마이크로렌즈 쌍이라 한다 텔레센트릭이란 용어는, 주광선이 이미지 공간에서 광 축에 평행하지만, 렌즈리트 쌍이 다음 액정 셀에 입력 시준 빔의 초점을 맞추지 않기 때문에, 즉, 2개의 렌즈리트 사이의 공간이 2f 이기 때문에, 렌즈리트는 어포컬하다는 사실을 나타낸다.
본 발명에서 사용될 수 있는 마이크로렌즈 어레이의 단면이 제7도에 도시되어 있다. 마이크로렌즈는 BK-7 유리와 같은 기판(88) 상에 제조된다. 렌즈리트 영역(90)은 기탄에 형성되고, 요구된 굴절률로 된 광 시멘트 또는 에폭시로 채워진다.
마이크로렌즈를 제조하는 방법으로는 몇 가지 방법이 있다. 한 방법은 LACE(Laser Assisted Controlled Etching)이고, 이것은 1992년 9월 15일자로, 그래트릭스(Gratrix) 등에게 허여된 미합중국 특허 제5,148,319호에 설명되어 있다. 이 방법으로, 미세 초점 레이저 빔은 선형 포토리지스트 상에 가변 세기 패턴을 기록하기 위해 사용된다. 가변 세기 패턴은 포토리지스트가 세기의 함수로서 경화되게 한다. 노출된 포토리지스트는 경화되지 않은 부분을 제거하기 위해 산 에칭(acid etch)되고, 포토리지스트의 에칭의 깊이는 레이저 기록 빔 세기의 함수이다. 그 후 프로필된 마이크로렌즈 패턴은 유리에 전달되고 요구된 굴절률의 유리 또는 광 에폭시로 채워진다.
마이크로렌즈를 제조하는 다른 기술은 선형 포토리지스트의 노출 중 요구된 직경의 마이크로렌즈에 다시 레이저 빔의 초점을 흐리게 만드는 것이다. 스퀘어 마이크로렌즈를 위해, 포토리지스트와 접촉하는 스퀘어 불투명 마스크가 사용된다.
레이저 빔의 세기 프로필은 빔을 어파다이징(apodizing)함으로써 요구된 세기 프로필이 되게 조정된다. 빔을 어파다이징하는데 사용된 일반적인 방법은 빔의 한 슬릿의 변경 폭을 스핀(spin)하는 것이다. 이 방법의 장점은 스캐닝이 필요하지 않다는 것이다. x-y 스테핑 어셈블리는 다음 마이크로렌즈 위치로 이동하는데 사용되지만, 로컬 포토레지스트 노출 중에는 고정 상태(stationary)로 남게 된다.
대안적인 마이크로렌즈 제조 방법은 플라즈마 에칭을 포함한다. 이것은 그래틱스(Gratix)에 의해 1992년 4월 12일에 출원된 미합중국 특허 제08/046,060호에 설명되어 있다. 경사도 인덱스 렌즈를 제조하는데 통상 사용되는 이온 주입 방법과 같은 다른 제조 방법도 또한 유용할 수 있다.
일반적으로, 마이크로렌즈의 포커싱 특징은 렌즈 곡률 및/또는 렌즈의 굴절률을 조정함으로써 제어될 수 있다. 굴절률이 클수록 곡률은 낮아지게 되어, 디바이스가 더 얇아지게 된다. 제조 과정에서 곡률 반경을 세밀하게 조절할 수 없는 경우에, 렌즈리트는 곡률 근사 반경으로 제조될 수 있는데, 실제반경에 대응하는 정확한 굴절률을 얻기 위해 렌즈리트용으로 사용되는 광 시멘트를 혼합함으로써 최종 조정이 이루어진다.
본 발명에 따라 구현된 전체 감색 디스플레이가 제8도에 도시되어 있다. 상술된 도면과 같이 공통 소자에 대해서는 동일한 참조 번호가 사용된다. 크세논 램프(92)와 같은 광원으로부터의 광은 요구된 대역폭 변경을 제공하기 위해 채도 노치 필터(94 : chroma notch filter)를 통해 나아가게 되고, 필요한 광 결합 메카니즘(100)을 포함하는 광섬유 파이프(98) 내로 결합 렌즈(96)에 의해 초점이 맞추어진다.
광 파이프의 반대 단부(102)는 키노폼 콜리메이터(collimator) 플레이트(104)를 조명하고 이 플레이트는 선형 편광자(10)에 입력을 제공한다. 텔레센트릭 어포컬 마이크로렌즈 어레이(106)는, 상술된 방식과 유사한 방식으로, 광 손실을 방지하기 위해 선형 편광자(10)와 제1액정 셀(12) 사이에 제공된다 액정 셀들(12, 20 및 26)의 각각의 픽셀들은 적합한 비디오 제어부(114)로부터 라인들(108, 110 및 112)을 통해 전송된 비디오 신호에 의해 제어된다. 색 디스플레이가 헬멧 장착 디스플레이로 사용될 때, 투영 스크린(56)은 헬멧의 바이저(visor) 광 지연 렌즈(116)에 이미지화한다.
본 발명에 따른 중요한 개선점은 시스템을 통한 전송 중 광출력을 유지하는데 있다. 연구된 시스템은 길이가 약 25 미크론이고, 초점 길이가 약 75 미크론의 곡률의 약 622 미크론 반경이고, SAG가 약 1.074 인 측면을 갖는 스퀘어 마이크로 렌즈를 사용했다. 액정 픽셀 투명 영역은 약 18미크론 길이의 측면을 갖는다. 렌즈리트는 액정 픽셀 투명 영역 보다 큰데, 그 이유는 인접 픽셀 사이의 전원 영역 내로 연장하기 때문이다. 참조된 바와 같이, 렌즈리트가 액정 픽셀 투명 영역 보다 다소 클 때 픽셀 투영부로의 광을 제한하는 것은 렌즈리트의 투영된 주변으로의 광을 제한하는 것을 또한 포함한다. 각 액정 셀 및 투영 스크린의 상대적인 광출력은, 본 발명의 텔레센트릭 어포컬 마이크로렌즈에 따르든 따르지 않든 간에, 530 nm의 파장으로 점원(point source) 및 20, 40 및 60 밀리라디안(milliradian) 소스를 포함하는 광원에 따라 구해졌다. 결과는 제9도에 요약되어 있는데, 제1액정 셀(12)의 광출력은 표준 기준을 제공한다. 본 발명에 따라 구해진 광출력은 칼럼 헤드 INV에 리스트 되어 있고, 본 발명에 따르지 않은 결과는 칼럼 헤드 W/O 아래에 리스트 되어 있다. 각 경우에서, 크기 선반에 걸친 광출력의 향상이 투영 스크린에서 달성된다.
본 발명의 특정 실시예가 도시되고 설명되었지만, 본 분야에 숙련된 자들에 의해 실시예가 다양하게 변경될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 본 발명에 따라 사용될 수 있는, 액정 셀들 보다는 편광 회전 소자들이 개발될 수 있다. 따라서, 본 발명은 첨부된 특허 청구의 범위에 의해서만 제한된다.
Claims (3)
- 소스 위치(8)로부터 광을 수신하여 선형 편광시키도록 배치된 선형 편광자(10), 상기 선형 편광자로부터 편광된 광의 경로(80, 86)에 연속적으로 배치된 다수의 색(color) 편광자(14, 22, 28), 및 각 쌍의 상기 연속적인 편광자들 사이에 배치된 각각의 픽셀화된 편광 회전 어레이-상기 편광 회전 어레이는 상기 선형 편광자로부터 입사된 광의 편광을 프로그램된 양 만큼 회전시키기 위한, 개별적으로 프로그램 가능한 편광 회전 픽셀들의 서로 정렬된 어레이들(12, 20, 26)을 포함함- 를 구비한 감색 디스플레이(subtractive color display)에 있어서, 각각의 픽셀 투영부(projection)를 구비한 각각의 텔레센트릭 어포컬 렌즈리트 쌍 어레이들(arrays of telecentnc afocal lenslet pairs)을 포함하는 각각의 광 컨파이너들(optical confiners; 68, 70, 72, 74)를 포함하되, 상기 광 컨파이너들은 각 쌍의 상기 연속적인 편광 회전 어레이들 사이에 배치되어 상기 편광 회전 어레이들간의 광 전송을 실질적으로 상기 픽셀들의 투영부들(84)로 제한하는 것을 특징으로 하는 감색 디스플레이.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 픽셀화된 편광 회전 어레이들은 각각의 활성 매트릭스 액정 셀들(active matrix liquid crystal cells)을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 감색 디스플레이.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 선형 편광자로부터 상기 편광 회전 어레이들의 반대측에 있는 화면(56), 및 상기 화면과 상기 화면에서 가장 가까운 상기 편광 회전 어레이 사이에 배치된 부가적인 광 컨파이너(76, 78)를 더 포함하고, 상기 부가적인 광 컨파이너는 상기 가장 가까운 편광 회전 어레이와 상기 화면 사이의 광 전송을 실질적으로 상기 편광 회전 픽셀들의 투영부들로 제한하는 것을 특징으로 하는 감색 디스플레이.
