Abstract

It is a reflective material for tarpaulins. The present invention relates to a reflective barrier material for trucks, and particularly to a stretchable band woven with reflective material adhered to truck tarpaulins to increase the visibility of truck trailers at night or low light conditions.

Trucks and trailers typically include open containers or flatbed trailers to transport materials such as wood, earth, bark, and packaged goods. It is desirable to cover the trailer to prevent flooding of these materials or damage by other factors. It may also be necessary to cover the trailer for the purpose of safety or to prevent the leaking of potentially harmful material to others who use the road during transportation, for example when the truck tows soil or stones at the construction site. Furthermore, in the case of a lightweight material which is likely to slip around a vehicle moving like a bark or sawdust, it is preferable to cover the dropping material during long-distance high-speed driving in order to prevent damage to the product. Because of this concern, many trucking and regulatory agencies are demanding the use of truck tarpaulins when transporting materials to open container trailers.

Although truck tarmac gives a lot of safety to other cars on the road, the tarmac itself is virtually indestructible at night due to the dark color of the tarmac itself. The tarpaulin can also cover the sides of the truck or trailer, or the like, and thereby degrade the existing safety characteristics of the vehicle. Even if another driver finds a truck, it is still difficult to estimate the distance to the truck or the size of the truck due to limited visibility.

Attempts have been made to make truck trailers more visible by applying reflectors or reflective materials, such as adhesive reflective tape, to the trailers. These methods are useful when used in a rigid-walled trailer car body, but are often difficult or impractical to apply to stretchable truck tarpaulins. Moreover, these devices are durable when prolonged use is exposed to adverse factors that are often encountered by long-term trucks. U.S. Patent No. 5,050,924 (Hansen) discloses the use of metal-backed reflectors and reflective glass bead paints on various parts of truck tarpaulins to increase visibility. These techniques may be effective in increasing visibility, but they are more burdened by implementation and have drawbacks similar to those described above. Moreover, stitching or welding reflective fibers to PVC coatings will be inefficient as they will degrade the reflective fibers due to wear during handling of the tarp.

Therefore, there is a need for a reflective element for use with truck tarpaulins that are distinctly visible at a distance and are easy to manufacture and durable. It is therefore a primary object of the present invention to provide a reflective tarp that meets these needs.

The present invention relates to a reflective element for attaching truck tarpaulins, which has increased visibility at night and is durable and easy to manufacture.

According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, in order to increase visibility at night, a stretchable band to which a reflective material is woven is attached to the surface of the tarpaulin. The material is woven within a stretchy band so that it is easy to fabricate and structurally supports the reflective material so that the reflective material is not easily damaged or detached from the tarpaulin.

The tarp includes at least a body sized to be able to cover the top, sides and one end of the truck trailer with a flexible tarp. Referring to FIG. 1, the truck 10 includes a trailer 12 connected to the tractor 14 in a known manner. The tarpaulin 20 of the present invention includes a reflective material for enhancing the visibility of the trailer in low light and dark conditions.
