A method for assembling a laminate of absorbent articles according to any one of claims 1 to 7 , comprising the steps of:
providing a first substrate (202) and a second substrate (210), each of the first substrate (204, 212) and the second substrate (210) having an opposing first surface (204, 212) and an opposing second surface (206, 214) and defining a width in a transverse direction;
wrapping the first surface of the first substrate onto a peripheral surface (404) of an anvil (402);
advancing a resilient material (208) into a spreader mechanism (412), said spreader mechanism including an engagement portion (419);
stretching the elastic material in the transverse direction to a first elongation (E 1 ) in the spreader mechanism;
advancing the resilient material from the spreader mechanism to the anvil, the anvil comprising an active vacuum zone (415) having a maximum width Wv in the transverse direction, the maximum width being divided into a first portion (452) and a second portion (454), the first portion being in overlapping relationship with and disposed inside the engagement portion in the transverse direction, the first portion having a width VZi in the transverse direction and the second portion having a width VZo in the transverse direction, VZi being greater than VZo;
positioning the elastic material in contact with the second surface of the first substrate on the anvil;
advancing the second substrate to position the first surface of the second substrate in contact with the elastic material and position the second surface of the first substrate on the anvil;
and ultrasonically bonding the first substrate to the second substrate with the elastic material positioned between the first substrate and the second substrate.
