Description

Numerous advantages are achieved by the disclosed method over conventional techniques. For example, the augmented reality (AR) devices described herein globally dim and/or selectively dim the ambient light that reaches the user's eyes, thereby transitioning from a dark interior to a bright exterior. May be used at varying light levels. Embodiments of the invention enable AR and virtual reality (VR) capabilities within a single device by using pixelated dimmers to attenuate world light by more than 99%. Embodiments of the present invention also use variable focus elements to reduce convergence-divergent motion accommodation conflicts using discrete or continuously variable depth plane switching techniques. Embodiments of the present invention improve battery life of AR devices by optimizing projector brightness based on the amount of detected ambient light. Other advantages of the present disclosure will also be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.
