The present invention relates to a direct heat type electrode for a gas discharge tube.
Background art
As this type of direct heat type electrode for a gas discharge tube, for example, the one disclosed in Japanese Utility Model Application Laid-Open No. 58-60852 is known. The direct heat type electrode for a gas discharge tube (direct heat type cathode for a gas discharge tube) disclosed in Japanese Utility Model Application Laid-Open No. 58-60852 has an electrode (tungsten filament coil) coated with an electron-emitting substance. It is roughly covered with a metal net, prevents the electron-emitting substance from being scattered and dropped by sputtering at the time of discharge, and can prolong the life of the electrode (fluorescent lamp).
Disclosure of the invention
An object of the present invention is to provide a direct heat type electrode for a gas discharge tube that can suppress occurrence of a short circuit (short circuit) at the time of energization, can prolong the life of the electrode, and obtain a stable discharge.
The inventor of the present invention has compared the conventional direct-heating type electrode for gas discharge tubes (directly-heated cathode for gas discharge tubes) with the discharge surface potential as an experimental factor, focusing on the cathode drop voltage (box potential). As a result, the following fact was newly found.
The equipotential surface, equipotential interface, box potential, and discharge mode to be used hereinafter are defined as follows. The equipotential surface is defined as a state in which a discharge surface that is in a potential equipotential state is formed. The equipotential interface is defined as a structure in which a metal oxide as an electron-emitting material is contact-coated on an equipotential surface and comes into contact with a gas. The box potential is defined as a potential generated between a cathode and a terminal that is electrically insulated from the cathode near the cathode during discharge. This value is close to the cathode drop voltage used as a general term of the discharge physical properties. The ion current is defined as a current generated by an ionized gas in which gas molecules are ionized by colliding electrons with gas molecules in a gas discharge tube. Thermionic emission is an electron emission in which when the temperature of a metal is raised, the thermal kinetic energy increases and electrons jump out into the space beyond the electron energy barrier (work function) of the metal. Electron emission from metal oxides as easily unstable electron emitting materials. Secondary electron emission refers to electron emission in which electrons are pushed out of the cathode into space when the ionized gas collides with the cathode.
When the change in the box potential in the DC operation was compared before and after the potential equalization, a remarkable difference in the box potential was confirmed as shown in FIG. The inventor has created an equipotential interface model and has considered the results of the investigation and research on this phenomenon. The discharge form in the gas discharge can be substantially expressed by three forms of ion current, thermionic emission, and secondary electron emission, and is theoretically expressed by the following relational expression. Incidentally, the discharge form of the vacuum discharge can be almost expressed only by thermionic emission, and is different from the discharge form of the gas discharge.

Next, the ion current (corresponding to Ii) and the emission current (electrons: corresponding to Ie) in the gas discharge tube are considered. Electron rest mass is 9.109 × 10 −31 kg, whereas the lightest hydrogen among the elements is 1.675 × 10 −27 It is much heavier than kg and electrons. Furthermore, ionized gas is attracted to the cathode and collided with it, while electrons are separated from the cathode. Therefore, the impact force of the ionized gas exceeds the impact force of the electrons, and the ionized gas damages the cathode. Are larger than electrons. From the above, the harmfulness of the ion current to the cathode can be understood. On the other hand, from the viewpoint of the light emission and discharge phenomena of the gas discharge tube, the ionized gas contributes as a light-emitting substance, and has the effect of drawing out more discharge current into the space depending on the ion current than in vacuum. . In a gas discharge tube, it is important to keep the influence on the cathode to a minimum while taking into account the merits and demerits of the ion current in order to improve the life characteristics and stability.
The box potential approximates the cathode drop voltage and relatively indicates the excitation and ionization states of the gas, and is a measure of the amount of ionized gas generated. The lower the box potential, the lower the amount of ionized gas generated.
As described above, there are three forms of gas discharge, namely, ion current, thermionic emission, and secondary electron emission. Thermionic emission is caused by heating a metal oxide such as barium as an easily electron-emitting substance. Thermionic emission has a role of causing gas ionization at the start of discharge to start discharge. After the start of the discharge, in the case of gas discharge, the ionized gas collides with the thermoelectrons emitted from the metal oxide as the electron emitting material. At this time, secondary electron emission occurs mainly from the interface between the electric conductor and the metal oxide as the electron-emitting material due to ionizing gas collision. In the case of gas discharge, the discharge current density per unit area is several tens to several hundred times that of vacuum discharge, and most of the total discharge current is formed by secondary electron emission.
Regarding the supply of secondary electrons, the electrical resistivity of a metal oxide as an easily emitting material is much higher than that of an electric conductor, and there is a limit to the supply of a single metal oxide as an easily emitting material. Most of the supply of secondary electrons is supplied via an electric conductor and is emitted from an interface with a metal oxide as an electron emitting material. Electron supply, which is the basis of secondary electrons to the electric conductor, may be supplied directly from an external circuit, or may be performed via a contact surface with a metal oxide as an electron emitting material. Thermionic emission also occurs from a metal oxide as an easily emitting material that does not form an interface with an electric conductor, but as described above, with respect to the supply of secondary electrons, a single metal oxide as an easily emitting material is used. There is a limit in the supply of GaN, the amount of secondary electron emission is small, and the absolute amount of discharge current from the metal oxide alone as an electron emitting material occupying in gas discharge is extremely small. In summary, the place where the cathode in gas discharge mainly emits electrons is the interface between the electric conductor and the metal oxide as an electron-emitting material.
Next, the equipotential interface model will be described with reference to FIGS. FIG. 17 is a diagram (model diagram) in which the horizontal axis is the heater applied voltage (Vf), that is, the axis for increasing or decreasing the cathode temperature depending on the amount of forced heating of the cathode, and the vertical axis is the cathode drop voltage (box potential) (Vc). It is. FIG. 18 is a diagram (model diagram) in which the horizontal axis represents the heater applied voltage (Vf) and the vertical axis represents the discharge current (Id). Note that, while the discharge current (Id) in FIG. 18 is constant, the vertical axis represents the composition ratio (region distribution) of the thermionic current, the secondary electron current, and the ionic current. The vertical axis in FIG. 17 indicates the height.
Constituent factors of the cathode temperature include a heater application voltage (Vf), that is, a forced heating amount to the cathode, and a so-called self-heating amount generated when the ionized gas collides with the cathode, which is determined by the total heat amount. In the region where the cathode temperature on the left side of FIG. 17 is low, that is, the amount of forcible heating is small, or the heat dissipation area is large, and the amount of heat loss from the cathode is large, the amount of generated thermoelectrons is small. As a result, the cathode drop voltage becomes equal to or higher than the ionization voltage, and the generation of ionized gas is accelerated. If the potential distribution on the cathode surface is non-uniform in this area, local discharge (dislocation of the discharge position) due to concentration of ion current and secondary electron current is likely to occur, and damage to the cathode surface due to ionized gas impact This is likely to cause scraping (sputtering) of a cathode material (metal oxide as an electron emitting material) and stabilization (mineralization) by oxidation with a reduced metal.
On the other hand, in the region where the temperature of the cathode on the left side of FIG. 17 is high, that is, the amount of forcible heating is large, or the heat radiation area is small, and the amount of heat stored in the cathode is large, the amount of generated thermoelectrons becomes excessive. The ion current decreases, and the cathode drop voltage falls below the ionization voltage. However, the cathode temperature rises, the vapor pressure of the cathode component is increased, and the evaporation of the metal oxide as the electron-emitting material easily occurs due to evaporation. Excess or deficiency of the amount of heat to the cathode is not preferable for the above-mentioned reason. As an indication of the operation region, in terms of box potential (cathode drop voltage), operation near the ionization voltage is suitable.
By the way, as an important element in the components of this model, there is a discharge area. This can be regarded as synonymous with the electrode surface area (S) in the relational expression. As described above, in the gas discharge, the discharge mainly consists of the emission of electrons from the interface between the electric conductor and the metal oxide serving as the electron emitting material. In addition to this, the discharge area changes depending on whether or not the potential is uniform (equipotential) as well as the temperature uniformity. In other words, the discharge area is proportional to the area of the equipotential surface or the length of the equipotential surface portion. As the equipotential surface becomes wider or longer, the electrode surface area (S: discharge area) increases. From the equation, the ratio of the thermionic current (Ith) increases, the amount of the ionic current decreases from the above equation (1), and the ionic current and the secondary electron current are dispersed on the equipotential surface. (Before potential equalization), the area distribution shifts to the thick line side (after potential equalization) of the model, and the box potential (cathode drop voltage) in FIG. 17 decreases from the above equation (3). Employing the equipotential interface structure of the equipotential surface, metal oxide, and gas, and increasing the amount of thermoelectrons, the amount of ionic current in the discharge current decreases, and the reason why the box potential in FIG. 17 decreases is explained. it can.
From the above, in the gas discharge, compared to the conventional non-equipotential cathode, by reducing the amount of ion current, ionized gas impact per unit discharge area can be reduced, and as a result, It can be seen that the load on the substrate is reduced, the decrease in the thermionic emission power is small, the life characteristics are improved, and accordingly, the movement of the discharge position is small, and the stability can be improved.
Next, the effectiveness of the equipotential surface for a gas discharge tube will be considered. As described above, the discharge form in vacuum discharge can be almost expressed only by thermionic emission, and is different from the discharge form in gas discharge. It can be said that the discharge area in a vacuum discharge is determined by the surface area formed by the metal oxide as the electron emission material on the thermionic emission surface. Therefore, in addition to thermionic emission, the discharge area component in a gas discharge tube having a discharge form consisting of ion current and secondary electron emission is different from the discharge area component in a vacuum discharge. Since the place responsible for electron emission is the interface between the electric conductor and the metal oxide as an electron-emissive material, the equipotential surface formed from the electric conductor and having almost the same potential as the discharge surface is effective in gas discharge. I found that.
Furthermore, by making the material used for the means for forming the equipotential surface into a mesh (thin wire structure), the surface area serving as the heat radiating surface and the volume serving as the heat conducting portion are not increased as much as possible, and as a result, the amount of heat loss is suppressed. The contact area between the metal oxide and the equipotential surface is increased, and as a result, the discharge area is increased. From the above, it has been found that the effect of the equipotential surface is further enhanced by forming the material used for the means for forming the equipotential surface into a mesh shape (fine line structure).
In the case where the potential distribution on the cathode surface is not uniform as in the conventional case, the amount of generated heat also becomes non-uniform accordingly, so that the generation density of thermoelectrons also becomes non-uniform, and the localization due to the concentration of ion current and secondary electron current occurs. A typical discharge (dislocation of the discharge position) will occur. The local discharge causes the cathode material (metal oxide as an electron emitting material) to be scraped (sputtered), and to be stabilized by oxidation with a reduced metal (mineralization), that is, to decrease the thermionic emission ability. , The discharge position moves to the next position having good thermoelectron emission characteristics. In this manner, the surface of the cathode is deteriorated while repeating the local degradation of thermionic emission. In addition, the discharge itself becomes unstable due to the movement of the discharge position described above.
In the electrode structure disclosed in Japanese Unexamined Utility Model Publication No. 58-60852, the electrodes and the metal net are short-circuited during energization (start preheating energization), and a potential difference is generated. It has also been found that there is a problem that the function as a hot cathode may not be exhibited due to the lack of preheating.
Based on the results of the investigation and research, the direct-heat-type electrode for a gas discharge tube according to the present invention is a direct-heat-type electrode for a gas discharge tube used for a gas discharge tube in which gas is hermetically sealed. A metal oxide, a heater for heating the metal oxide, and an electric conductor provided in contact with the metal oxide on the outermost surface side of the metal oxide; Is characterized by being electrically insulated.
In the direct heat type electrode for a gas discharge tube according to the present invention, since the equipotential surface is effectively formed on the surface portion of the metal oxide by the electric conductor, thermionic emission occurs in a wide area of the formed equipotential surface. As a result, the discharge area increases, the electron emission amount per unit area (electron emission density) increases, and the load at the discharge position is reduced. As a result, the occurrence of local discharge can be suppressed, and the life of the electrode can be extended. In addition, since the movement of the discharge position is also suppressed, a stable discharge can be obtained for a long time. Further, since the electric conductor is provided in a state in which it is electrically insulated from the heater for heating, it is possible to suppress a short circuit between the electric conductor and the heater for heating when the power is supplied, and it is possible to reliably perform preheating. . In addition, in connection with the increase in the discharge area, the current density was slightly increased, and the load was slightly increased. That is, even if the discharge current was increased, the damage could be reduced as compared with the conventional one, and almost the same as the conventional one. A directly heated electrode for a gas discharge tube having a large discharge current in a shape can be provided, and a pulse operation and a large current operation can be realized.
Further, it is preferable that the electric conductor has a predetermined length and is provided over the longitudinal direction of the heater for heating. In such a configuration, the electric conductors make the electric potentials of the discharge surfaces composed of a plurality of discharge points or discharge lines substantially equal, and stabilize the metal oxides, which are deterioration factors, by sputtering metal oxides and oxidizing with reduced metals (mineralization). That is, a decrease in the thermionic emission ability can be suppressed, and movement of the discharge position can also be suppressed. As a result, it is possible to extend the life of the electrode and obtain a stable discharge.
The electric conductor is preferably a high melting point metal formed in a mesh shape. As described above, since the electric conductor is a refractory metal formed in a mesh shape, an electric conductor having a configuration capable of suppressing a decrease in thermionic emission ability and a movement of a discharge position can be realized at low cost and more easily. be able to. Further, since the electric conductor is made of a rigid body, it can be easily processed and can be provided in close contact with the metal oxide. When the electric conductor is a high-melting metal formed in a mesh shape, it is possible to easily provide many places where the high-melting metal contacts the metal oxide.
Further, it is preferable that an electric insulating layer is formed on the surface of the electric conductor. By forming the electric insulating layer on the surface of the electric conductor as described above, it is possible to easily realize a configuration capable of reliably suppressing a short circuit between the electric conductor and the heater during discharging at low cost and easily.
In addition, the electric insulating member having an opening is provided, the electric insulating member is provided between the electric conductor and the heater, and the metal oxide is provided through the opening of the electric insulating member. Preferably, it is provided so as to be in contact with the electric conductor. In the case of such a configuration, a configuration capable of reliably suppressing a short circuit between the electric conductor and the heater for discharging at the time of discharging can be easily realized at low cost.
Further, the electric insulating member is a cylindrical member having an opening formed in a side wall portion thereof, the heater for heating is provided inside the cylindrical member, and the electric conductor is provided outside the cylindrical member. Preferably. In the case of such a configuration, a configuration capable of reliably suppressing a short circuit between the electric conductor and the heating heater at the time of discharging can be realized at lower cost and more simply.
Further, the metal oxide may include any one of barium (Ba), strontium (Sr), and calcium (Ca), a mixture of these oxides, and a rare earth metal oxide. preferable. As described above, since the metal oxide contains any one of barium, strontium, and calcium, or a mixture of these oxides or an oxide of a rare earth metal, the work function in the electron emission portion is reduced. It is possible to reduce the size effectively, and the emission of thermoelectrons becomes easy.
