Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for aromatic amino compounds at a relatively low temperature, at high space time yield and advantageously, by nitrating an aromatic compound with an aqueous solution of nitric acid in the presence of crystalline silica molecular sieve catalyst in a liquid phase. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic compound, especially a monosubstituted benzene is nitrated with a aqueous solution of nitric acid in the presence of crystalline silica molecular sieve catalyst having preferably about 5-6.5Angstrom effective pore diameter to give an aromatic nitro compound at a relatively low temperature usually 20-150 deg.C, preferably 40-120 deg.C in high yield without requiring treatment of waste sulfuric acid and harmful gases such as NOX and approximately no occurrence of dinitro compounds difficult to handle, as by-products in a liquid phase and advantageously with respect to esparating operation. Further this process has merits of providing para-isomer useful as a raw material for heat- resistant high polymers in high selectivity in nitration of a monohalobenzene.
