Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a mountain cork resin useful as a heat-resistant packing material and a heat-resistant electric wire coating material, having excellent elasticity, flame retardance and moldability, by reacting mountain cork resin with a chlorosilane to give a chlorosilane modified mountain cork resin and copolymerizing an ethylenic unsaturated monomer on the chlorosilane modified mountain cork resin. CONSTITUTION:(a) A mountain cork resin, clay minerals such as zeolite, attapulgite or palygorskite containing a silanol group on the surface is reacted with (b) 0.3-40.0mol. based on 1mol. constituent composition of the component (a) of a chlorosilane such as vinyltrichlorosilane or phenyltrichlorosilane optionally dissolved in an organic solvent such as methanol at normal temperature for about 2hr to give a chlorosilane modified mountain cork resin (A). Then (B) 0.5-2mol. (based on 1mol. component b) of an ethylenic unsaturated monomer such as (alpha-methyl)styrene is copolymerized on the component A in the presence of a catalyst at normal temperature or preferably 60-110 deg.C.
