Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain easily an isobutylene polymer having a hydroxyl group etc. on its end that is useful in various applications, by decomposing the end ester group of a polymer which has a specific end and is composed of isobutylene units as the main component. CONSTITUTION:The end ester group of an isobutylene polymer which is composed of isobutylene units as the main component and has at least 1.1 end groups represented by formula I per molecule is decomposed to produce a isobutylene polymer which is composed of isobutylene units having a number- average mol.wt. of 500-200,000 and has at least 1.1 end groups represented by formula II per molecule. In the formulae, R<1> is H or a monovalent hydrocarbon group; L is H, an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal; and q is 1 when L is an alkali metal, and is 1/2 when L is an alkaline earth metal.
