Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain menadione which is used as a synthetic intermediate of medicines such as vitamin K1 or K2 or as vitamin K3 in high yield under mild reaction conditions, by catalytic oxidation of 2-methyl-1-naphthol with molecular oxygen in a specific solvent using an inexpensive catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Using an aqueous solution of cupric chloride and lithium chloride as a catalyst, 2-methyl-1-naphthol is brought into contact with molecular oxygen in a reaction solvent which has an appropriate hydrophilicity and lipophilicity such as a mixture of a lower aliphatic alcohol of 1-4C carbon atoms such as ethanol with an aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene or a single long-chain aliphatic alcohol of 5-10C carbon atoms such as n-hexanol or a combination thereof at 30-80 deg.C for 2-7hr, further the contact is continued for more 1-3hr to effect the oxidation whereby menadione is obtained. According to the present process, the isolation and purification of the subject product, menadione becomes easy, the solution after salting-out can be reused as a catalyst solution, further, recovered solvent mixture also can be reused.
