Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide the titled composition containing a specific polyphenol compound as an active component, exhibiting specific antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans existing in oral cavity and having excellent cariostatic and antiperiodontosis activity and high safety. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition contains the compound of formula I-II (R1 is H or OH; R2 is H or group of formula III) as an active component in an amount of usually >=0.001wt.%. The present composition exhibits strong antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans which is a main bacterium to form bacterial plaque causing dental caries and periodontosis and is extremely effective in preventing dental caries of child having frequent opportunity to take a sugar-containing food or drink, especially cake, candy, etc., and periodontosis of adult induced by dental caries. The above compound is a component of tea and has extremely high safety for the continuous administration over a long period. It is available in large quantity and is extremely useful from industrial viewpoint as well as in the contribution to the improvement of oral hygienicity.
