Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the strength, especially toughness, of the title sintered body by forming a carbonaceous coating film on the surface of the fibrous structure of the Si3N4 or SiC to be dispersed and incorporated, and specifying the molar ratio of the excess oxygen to the oxide of a group IIIa element in a matrix component. CONSTITUTION:The fibrous structure consisting of at least one kind between Si3N4 and SiC is dispersed and incorporated in the matrix component consisting essentially of Si3N4 and the compd. of a group IIIa element to obtain the sintered body. A coating film consisting of >=1 kind among carbonaceous materials, carbides, and nitrides is formed on the surface of the fibrous structure, and the structures are dispersed in the matrix component, wherein the molar ratio of the excess oxygen to the compd. of a group IIIa element, expressed in terms of the oxide, is controlled to 1-3. Consequently, the reaction of the fibrous structure with the matrix component is inhibited, both the structure and component exhibit their inherent strength, and hence a silicon nitride-based sintered body having mechanical strength can be obtained.
