Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of picture retrieval without independently forming a recording area for a contracted picture by reproducing several blocks from the heads of respective image files in case of simultaneously displaying many contracted pictures and selecting one of them at the time of retrieval. CONSTITUTION:An image is inputted by a scanner or the like and stored in an image memory 10. Image data read out from the memory 10 are blocked to 1/16, 1/4, etc., by a contracting circuit and respective blocks are recorded in an optical disk or the like through a block memory 12 and a coding circuit 13. In case of retrieving a required image, the contracted pictures of 1/16, 1/4, etc., are reproduced through a system controller 15 and 16 or 4 contracted pictures are simultaneously displayed. If the image can not be identified by a 1/16 contraction ratio, the contracted pictures are expanded up to 1/4 and 4 pictures are compared. Consequently, many contracted pictures can be simultaneously displayed, retrieving work can be easily executed and the recording capacity of the pictures can be reduced.
