Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable the production of the titled preform in improved productivity while preventing the peeling phenomenon, by forming a porous glass layer on the outer circumference of a core glass rod for optical fiber and heating the obtained composite preform with a ring-shaped heater to produce a transparent glass preform, wherein one end of said composite preform is made transparent by heating with said ring-shaped heater and then said heater is passed along the rod from the other end to successively make the whole rod transparent. CONSTITUTION:An end (a) of a composite preform composed of a core glass rod 1 and a porous glass layer 2 is made transparent (6) by heating with a ring-shaped heater 5 to increase the bonding force between the porous glass layer 2 and the core glass rod 1. The composite preform is continuously made transparent from an end (b) opposite to the above heat-treated end (a) until the whole composite preform is made transparent to obtain the objective preform.
