Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable mass production of the titled sol, by heating and maintaining an aqueous suspension containing zirconium hydroxide at a specific temperature and adding an acid to the prepared aqueous suspension containing crystallized zirconium having a specific degree of crystallization. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous suspension containing zirconium hydroxide is maintained in a heated state at >=80 deg.C until degree of crystallization of formed zirconia reaches >=80% to give an aqueous suspension containing crystallized zirconium. Stable sol can be produced by obtaining the zirconia having >=80% degree of crystallization. Then an acid is added to the prepared aqueous suspension containing crystallized zirconia. By this method, zirconia sol having <=0.1mu average particle diameter can be mass-produced. An aqueous suspension containing zirconium hydroxide and impurities may be used, an aqueous suspension containing crystallized zirconia is obtained similarly to the above-mentioned method, the suspension is washed, the ions of the impurities are removed and then an acid may be added.
