Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R<1> is 2-10C alkyl; R<2> is methyl or ethyl, provided that carbon numbers of R<1> are larger than carbon numbers of R<2>; m and n are 0 or 1 and m+n=1). EXAMPLE:4-(1-Methylheptyloxy)-3-methyl-benzoic acid 4'-octyloxy-4-biphenylester. USE:Liquid crystal display element and liquid composition used as liquid crystal light switching element having excellent compatibility with other liquid crystal material and lowering no upper limit temperature of cholesteric phase or chiral smectic phase. PREPARATION:Aromatic carboxylic acids expressed by formula II (Z is OH) are reacted with phenolic or hetero-substituted phenolic compounds expressed by formula III (X is H) in the presence of an esterification catalyst to provide the compound expressed by formula I.
