PURPOSE:To manufacture an ion-exchange membrane process bipolar system electrolytic cell having small electric resistance at low cost by press-contacting the side walls of a unit anodic chamber and a unit cathodic chamber with protruding parts in the electrolytic cell of an alkali metallic chloride aq. soln. wherein a cation-exchange membrane is used. CONSTITUTION:In an ion-exchange membrane process electrolytic cell for producing NaOH and gaseous chlorine by electrolyzing the aq. soln. of alkali metallic chloride such as NaCl, an architrave-shaped circumferential wall 1 is made of metal or plastic and side walls 2 are made of metal and ribs 3 for conducting electricity are welded.
