Abstract
PURPOSE:To manufacture an ion-exchange membrane process bipolar system electrolytic cell having small electric resistance at low cost by press-contacting the side walls of a unit anodic chamber and a unit cathodic chamber with protruding parts in the electrolytic cell of an alkali metallic chloride aq. soln. wherein a cation-exchange membrane is used. CONSTITUTION:In an ion-exchange membrane process electrolytic cell for producing NaOH and gaseous chlorine by electrolyzing the aq. soln. of alkali metallic chloride such as NaCl, an architrave-shaped circumferential wall 1 is made of metal or plastic and side walls 2 are made of metal and ribs 3 for conducting electricity are welded. This bipolar system electrolytic cell is constituted by using a cation-exchange membrane 12 as the exchange membrane and clamping a plurality of sets of a unit anodic chamber 20 and a unit cathodic chamber 21 with filter press-type clamping frames 17. Many protrusions 11 are provided to the lamellate side walls 2 of either of the unit anodic chamber 20 and the unit cathodic chamber 21 and both side walls of the unit anodic chamber and the unit cathodic chamber are press-contacted with these protrusions and assembled. Thereby the bipolar system electrolytic cell of the alkali metallic chloride aq. soln. wherein the electric connection between unit cells is sure and contact electric resistance is small and electrolytic power efficiency is excellent can be manufactured at low cost.
