CONSTITUTION:A surface active agent having optical function is produced by allowing a compd. having an active hydrogen group expressed by A-OH or A-NH2 (wherein A is a residue of a hydrophobic compd. having optical function) to react with an acid anhydride expressed by formula I (wherein R is a 2-10C aliphatic hydrocarbon group, 6-7C cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon group, or 6-13C aromatic hydrocarbon group, which may have a substituent). Said surface active agent is a compd. expressed by formula II (wherein each A and R is the same group as the group expressed by the formula I; X is -O-, -NH-).
