Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical material which is excellent in transparency, low optical dispersion, heat resistance, mechanical characteristics, moisture resistance and moldability, by (co)polymerizing a specified compd. derived from 2-norbornen-5-ol, alone or with other monomer copolymerizable therewith if necessary. CONSTITUTION:Either a compd. A of the formula as shown (where R is H or CH3; R<1-2> are each H or a 1-20C hydrocarbon group) obtd. by catalytically hydrogenating, for example, 2-norbornen-5-ol at its ring double bond and then esterifying the product with (meth)acrylic acid, or a monomer mixture of compd. A with other monomer B copolymerizable therewith [e.g., methyl (meth)acrylate] in such a proportion that A/B=5-100/95-0, is (co)polymerized at 0-200 deg.C to give an optical material consisting of a (co)polymer having a wt.-average MW (in terms of PS) of 5,000-1,000,000.
